I get the point you're trying to make, and don't want to come across picky buut ...you're actually wrong with the numbers. When you take into consideration the preseason games, there are actually more than 42 nights of hockey that Westgate gets to benefit from. If it's any consolation, she got her numbers wrong too.

Financially speaking, teams generally charge full price for preseason games so they're certainly revenue generating nights for the team. As well, most people tend to give away the preseason tickets to families or ones who don't usually get a chance to go to the games (at least I do) so the team, and Westgate in general, have the opportunity to be exposed to people who usually wouldn't visit the team/area. None of that means much except to point out that the Team and the Westgate District benefit from more than 41 nights a year.

This Councilwoman is oblivious. Hockey Franchise poaching has been a two-way street between Canadien and U.S cities. I find it laughable that as an elected official, she does not understand the economics of sports. If Phoenix was an attractive hockey market, the team would not be league-owned at this point. Also, Glendale will not build a new hockey arena as they put all their chips in the Cardinals Palatial stadium. I think Seattle would be a better market for the 'Yotes, the city has expressed strong interest in obtaining a team and constructing a new arena, and it is a U.S market that is close to Canada, so you will definitely draw fans from both countries.

So her plan is that magically all of the sudden the city is going to care enough to make it profitable? Unless she wants to base it all on the excitement of the WCF run, which considering the up & down nature of the sport would be like deciding to marry someone after you sleep together for the 1st time. What happens if they get off to a slow start & the arena is empty those precious 41 nights she's banking on?

No one likes to see fans who have grown attached to a team lose it, but at some point you must face facts that its just not going to work there. I hate to make it seem like a knock on Coyotes fans, cause its not. Those people aren't the problem, its just that there aren't enough of them to make it a long term success for the league, the team & even the community. That is a HUGE expense to them for something that is losing money. The "build the market" argument needs to be killed for good, this isn't NFL where even the crappiest franchises in the league are still making dollars hand over fist. The NHL needs to take a bigger slice of the national fanbase & build that before they can think they can just march into any city they want & "build it & they will come" their way into financial success. A franchise's business model can't be "Well if we can win or contend for The Cup EVERY year maybe we'll make money." Ideally you want to be in a market where you can still keep your head above water during the lean years, or at least surround the loss years with profitable ones.

Really?
There's a substantial amount of Canadians who make up Arizona in the winter & purchased a lot of homes when the market was in the dumps & people were foreclosing so I'd be careful about what I say.
This team has lost money EVERY year it's been in Phoenix & even with the success they've had over the last 3 years it's stunning they're still losing money. It's clearly not a viable NHL market. Having said that, Glendale hurt itself when they built this arena & as much money as this team loses (& the money that taxpayers are forced to dump in) Glendale needs this arena or else that whole area is tostitos. I'd hate to pay taxes in Glendale

Does the city council of Glendale wish to ask the nice people of Winnipeg what it feels like to lose a team to poachers?

There are markets (in Canada and the US) that are much more viable than Glendale right now and have just as much - or more - potential for future revenue. Phoenix poached a team years ago and have had their chance to show support for the on ice product and failed. Now is the time for another city to get its shot. (actually 3 years ago was but...)

In no particular order I would suggest Seattle, Hartford and Quebec City as the first three to take a peek at. (and yes each has its issues to deal with)
