It doesnt matter what level hockey you are playing you are supposed to be in control of your body every “slip second” (or split second is what i think you meant. granted it wasnt as flagrant as punching him in the back of the head but it was on purpose – whether it be “instinct” or not. it was not a high hit, it was a miss on the hit and the thought was “i am going to miss him with my intended hit, i need to hit him with something – oh wait my elbow can reach, i will stick that out and clip him with that.” that is obviously what happened there.

these guys play hockey at the highest level and are perfectly in control of their actions, they need to be responsible for their actions.

I still won’t call this justice, since it happened in front of two refs who turned a blind eye, but it’s definitely deserved. No way to defend it.

But this is Shanahan were talking about. Nothing he has done this post-season has made much sense. There have been some suspensions that were way too large, and some that should have happened but didn’t. The sad part is, it seems like the names of the players involved plays a large role in his decision making….

When your trying to hit someone, and they make a sudden move like Volchenkov did sometimes you reach for the hit out of instinct or as a reflex (happens a lot int knee on knee hits). Your just trying to get a piece of the guy, but sometimes it ends up as a high hit. Thats obviously what happened here.

Its easy to sit here afterwards watching the hit in slow motion going “Gee, why would he do that?”, but players don’t have the option of throwing the hit in slow motion. It happens in a slip second, and sometimes the outcome isn’t good.

That being said, I agree with the suspension because he did hit him dangerously.

But to answer your question, when these guys are playing, I’m sure they’re focused more on doing their job than on the fact that every little thing they’re doing is on camera. Otherwise, we’d get fewer shots of snot rockets and cup adjustments.
