Evgeni Malkin nets hat trick for Russia at Worlds, goes for gold tomorrow

May 19, 2012, 12:28 PM EDT

Lots of people have been proclaiming Evgeni Malkin to be the best player in the world for most of the season. While he couldn’t will the Penguins deeper into the playoffs, he’s doing just fine for Russia at the World Championships.

Malkin netted a hat trick against Finland today to help Russia to a 6-2 win and a spot in the gold medal game tomorrow. Malkin’s three-goal performance is enough to help the rest of the world to take notice of how dominant of a player he’s been this year and his Russian teammates are more than happy to have him on their run for a gold medal. Oh by the way, Alex Ovechkin had a goal as well.

Russia will face either Slovakia or Czech Republic in the championship game tomorrow. Now soak in some crude YouTube highlights of Malkin’s performance today.

It helps when you don’t have to go up against a 19 year old Flyer

Giroux doesn’t have time for hockey. He is touring with Nickelback.

    Datsyuk > malkin

    • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - May 19, 2012 at 4:21 PM

Datsyuk is the by far the best all-around player in the legue, but I honestly don’t know who I’d pick. Malkin showed this year that he can carry a team on his back.

Datsuk is nowhere close to being as good as Geno. He shouldn’t even be on Russia’s top line

No, performing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs does that, being a leader and consistent does that.
Doing whatever in the world championships means jack.

    • sportsfreak13 - May 19, 2012 at 3:29 PM

he has won a Stanley cup and was the Conn smythe winner that year and this year he had the most points in the regular season. That seems pretty consistent to me.

You must have been asleep the past 3 years. He’s a petulant child who can disappear for until series since then.

It’s 2012 out there and I know I’d take Stamkos and Giroux over Jekyl and Hyde Malkin.

Who has disappeared with the best, Joe Thorton Dany Heatley level of disappearances

      • sportsfreak13 - May 19, 2012 at 3:46 PM

yea its not like giroux disappeared during the devils series..o wait! Hope your not a fan of the pens because its uneducated fans like you who can make a teams fanbase look stupid.

      • redux12 - May 20, 2012 at 9:25 AM

Actually it’s losers like you who have nothing better to do than troll Internet forums that make a fan base look bad. That and biting security guards fingers off at PNC park.

      • sportsfreak13 - May 20, 2012 at 12:43 PM

says the man trolling this article. At least our fans don’t go around beating up war veterans.

    • crosberries - May 19, 2012 at 3:29 PM

and right NOW he’s led the NHL in regular season in points and is leading the world championships. What are you going to say when he wins the hart holtonandastoria that he couldn’t lead his team to the cup? Were talking about the best player in the world not team. learn to differentiate or follow a different sport so we don’t have to read your moronic comments.

      • crosberries - May 19, 2012 at 6:54 PM

I believe the players also think he’s the best in the league

diksyuks washed up give up the dream old man

  9. hockeyfan28 - May 20, 2012 at 1:43 AM

There’s 5 guys you can make a case for being the world’s best player Datsyuk, Malkin, Crosby, Stamkos, and Giroux. Do to injury risks Crosby and Datsyuk may not be playing in a couple years. That’s leaves you with Stamkos. Malkin, and Giroux the fact that Stamkos is the best goal scorer in hockey but doesn’t do much else places him third. If you where building a franchise around one guy it’s either Giroux or Malkin. It’s a tossup but I’d go with Giroux cause he’s a better player on the defensive end.

Unreliable Russians, condescending Canadians or smarmy Swedes … it doesn’t matter one bit ! … we LA Kings fans say “bring ‘em on” right now !
