Suspension debate 2: Martin Hanzal boards Dustin Brown

May 16, 2012, 12:01 AM EDT

The Los Angeles Kings steamrolled the Phoenix Coyotes 4-0 in Game 2, but Kings captain Dustin Brown paid much of the price. Mike Smith gave a Billy Smith-esque whack to the back of his leg in the second period but Martin Hanzal‘s boarding check will probably get the most attention from the NHL:

Shane Doan‘s boarding hit is generating debate of its own, yet the general Twitter consensus is that Hanzal’s more likely to receive discipline for his hit. What do you think, though? If he deserves a suspension, how many games should he sit?

Needs to be suspended. Clearly had an opportunity to turn and put a shoulder into him rather than shove him from behind. As for how many games, Shanny only knows

Doan should walk. Smith should get a 1 game suspension for being a disgrace to the sport and his team. He better get his temper under control. Hanzal should get a 1 game suspension. Hanzal doesn’t have a history which is why he gets off relatively easy in my opinion.

…based on which of the nine (so far) sets of rules / explanations we’ve heard from Shamahan?

  4. raiderussell - May 16, 2012 at 1:03 AM

The NHL should suspended him for 7 games, a cheap shot by a frustrated player.

    doan doesn’t get a suspension.
    hanzal gets one suspension.
smith should definitely get one suspension. even though he’s a goalie and needs to be protected, what he did to brown was blatant and flagrant. you can’t have it both ways. and maybe if one whole game suspension is too much, then maybe a one period suspension.

I couldn’t believe they gave something to Brown for embelishing. What do they think happens when someeone basically takes a 2×4 to the back of one of your knees and you don’t see it coming?

One thing for a goalie to hack at the boot a little bit. Whole other story to go for the back of a knee.

    Doan nothing
    Smith nothing
Should be 4 games for Hanzal if you want to really send a message but will most likely be 2

    Agreed with Hilton

The hockey knowledge in the crowd is awful, way to cheer for the big illegal hit.

I agree, but what do you expect its Phoenix.

      3 Games for Hanzal

Smith looked to be harnessing his inner ‘Hextall” with that slash. Yikes.

For what has happened this year in the first 3 rounds, I bet Shanny can’t wait to get out of the office and onto the golf course.

Anybody see how cheap tickets are going for in Phoenix? It’s so cheap, it’s stupid!

  11. blomfeld - May 16, 2012 at 10:53 AM

Doesn’t matter one way or the other … the entire Phoenix team will be suspended shortly !

  12. aventador12 - May 16, 2012 at 11:17 AM

@ blomfield: I like that. (^^,)/ ! But the way suspensions are being handed out and how inconsistent “you know who” is, who knows what we’ll expect.

Smith should def get suspension for his classless act if he’s that rattled because a team is taking him to the woodshed maybe he should find the bench for a game or two
