Paul Hornung tells Patrick Kane to be careful: “These kids carry knives and guns and all that kind of stuff”

May 15, 2012, 1:51 PM EDT

Patrick Kane Cinco de Mayo

The annual Patrick Kane intervention took an odd turn on Monday when 76-year-old Pro Football Hall of Famer Paul Hornung weighed in.

“You’ve just got to be careful that you don’t get into any trouble,” Hornung told the Chicago Tribune. “So many of these kids carry knives and guns and all that kind of stuff today that it is kind of frightening. Those kind of actions are just a complete no-no. You just can’t be in the wrong spot at the wrong time.”

While Kane seemingly lives for being in the wrong spots at the wrong times (most recently, the University of Wisconsin during Cinco de Mayo) he’s yet to reach the stage of weapons being brandished. Generally speaking, Kane party pictures are more “keg stands with some bros” than “jumped into a street gang.”

Hornung might’ve been a bit off the mark there, but the former Green Bay Packers star did make a salient point.

“You know as an athlete which places to stay out of. Lombardi put four or five places off limits,” said Hornung, who lives in Louisville, Ky. “The players know the places where they should and shouldn’t go.”

This is the issue a lot of Chicago media has with Kane. Why must all his partying be done so publicly, so brazenly?

“No one is saying he needs to turn into the Church Lady, but he doesn’t always have to be Mr. Party,”  wrote Rick Morrissey of the Sun-Times. “Not every outing has to be a public spectacle.”

I think Hornung’s point isn’t that Kaner is hanging with street gangs – it’s that regular old fashioned bar fights can be a little more dangerous today than in Hornung’s day. People are more likely to use weapons today, and Kane does not need to meet one of these people at the wrong time – bad for his career from a health point of view. It seems from these reports that Kane is a bit of an angry, disrespectful drunk; and this is a more dangerous quality than was previously the case.

Perfect example of an altercation that happened between Brain Urlacher and Bas Ruten in a bar/club one night. Bas allegedly stepped on his toes by accident, apoligized, and after offering to buy a round for Urlacher, Brian asked if Bas wanted to take it outside. Bas and his buddies started laughing, which pissed Urlacher off even more. Bas then said sure, and finally people interveined (sp) and let Urlacher know who Bas was.

You never know who you might be facing in a bar fight. Even without weapons. Bas would have destroyed him with his bare hands.

You want to know why I know this story is BS? Because Urlacher doesn’t get into bar fights. At least Bas has a good imagination.

This is what my friends and I refer to as the “Florian Rule”. If you ever think about getting into a fight, just remember that the average looking guy you want to throw down with, could be Kenny Florian.

Florian looks like any other random dude you would see out and about…except he would pound the crap out of pretty much any non UFC fighter of any stature.

So be careful out there, and don’t throw down with random Ken Flo’s.

    @michiganhockey11

I heard Bas tell the story but had no idea it was Urlacher he was talking about. Makes me respect Bas even more. Thanks for the info

Yeah, I remember it from a Bas interview on best damn sports show. I think the youtube of it is still out there. Yeah, Urlacher might have had 3-4 inches and 40-50lbs on Bas, but it really wouldn’t have been a fair fight at all.

He beat the crap out of a taxi cab driver over a couple of dollars or cents I cannot remember when he makes millions of dollars. Gets obliterated publicly on cinco de mayo and chokes a girl. Wth is Paul talking about people be ware Kaner is on the loose and in full force.

I heard what made Kane choke the chic (not chicken) was that the girl picked up his sunglasses and said “ehhh…. not good enough”.
