Discuss: Rangers ride strong third period, top Devils

For the first two periods, neither the New York Rangers nor the New Jersey Devils managed to find the net. Still, there was a sense that for at least Game 1, the Devils might just be a little better. That changed in the third period, however, as the Rangers found an extra gear and ultimately won it 3-0. (Which is a little more one-sided than it really was because of an empty-netter.)

Let’s get chatting.

  • Henrik Lundqvist stopped all 21 shots while Martin Brodeur allowed two goals on 27 pucks that got to the Devils’ net. Can New Jersey win this series if it really comes down to Hank vs. Marty?
  • The Rangers fans turned from mocking Alex Ovechkin at the 8:00 mark to doing the same for Ilya Kovalchuk at the 17:00 minute mark. Who should they tease if they manage to make it to the Stanley Cup finals? Shane Doan at the 19-minute mark? Anze Kopitar at 11? Share your best choices.
  • New York blocked 26 Devils shots tonight. Can Peter DeBoer find a way to solve a system that New Jersey hasn’t really had to fight through in the playoffs yet?
  • Zach Parise showed arguably the most burst for the Devils, firing five shots on goal including some dangerous shorthanded chances. Should John Tortorella worry that Parise’s a few bounces away from being a problem for New York?
  • The Rangers got another game-winning goal from a blueliner; this time from Dan Girardi. Check it out below:

Anyone in NYC know how to make ice? Watching that game makes me wanna run out and get a slushie.

Hey, the Garden isn’t the only arena that has ice problems in warm, humid weather. Tis the season, and BOTH teams are playing under the same conditions.

      • buckeye044 - May 14, 2012 at 11:14 PM

Nice to see you admit it was bad. 60 and rain isn’t exactly warm weather.

      • brian32556 - May 14, 2012 at 11:43 PM

Rain douchebag equals moisture equals bad ice conditions. Been watching hockey long?!

msg has the worst ice in the nhl. It’s a fact from players. But its irrelevant they both are playing there. This isn’t the devils first game at msg either, you just gotta deal with it. Good game should be a good series. I like the rangers, but that forecheck is relentless. You have to wonder what kind of toll that will have as the series goes on.

      • brian32556 - May 15, 2012 at 3:58 PM

And when did you conduct this poll – this morning in your shower!? The majority of arenas have this problem when they play late in the playoffs – remember Buffalo and Boston skating around with sheets to clear
the fog? The same complaint was made this week in Phoenix, LA, St. Louis & Nashville. Deal with it.

      • odj810 - May 16, 2012 at 9:05 AM

It’s called Espn, they do player polls constantly. If you want to get technical they had the 3rd worst ice in a player poll. Behind only florida and tampa. Do you get that offended your ice is terrible? I think its irrelevant to the series its just a fact.

      • brian32556 - May 16, 2012 at 11:07 AM

Ohhhh! So when you say “Its a fact they have the worse ice!” you’re just twisting what you want to hear. Go back to the showers!

Yeah, Dolan spent all that money on renovating, and you think he could have bought a better ice maker for the rink, not just the new super suites!

Well as I predicted 3 shutouts for the King in this series he comes right out of the soot with # 1 in game # 1 ! Start decorating the BROOM’s !

Go back to your videos douchebag!

Those who do not understand something find it boring. Thus you do not understand the sport of hockey and what it takes to win in the sport. Some great saves and good defense in the first two periods is not boring it’s entertaining in a different form. If you are looking for a 6-5 victory go play nhl 12 or watch hockey from the 70’s.

      • duece430 - May 14, 2012 at 11:54 PM

Or put Bryz in one of the nets

  5. brian32556 - May 14, 2012 at 11:07 PM

The Rangers’ stifling defense will continue to shut down Devils chances and what might get thru, the KING will knock away! The Devils so-so defense and over-the-hill Marty make our offense look that much better! Rangers in 6 or less!

  6. dannythebisforbeast - May 14, 2012 at 11:17 PM

Where’s the 3 devils fans?? No chirping today.

  7. jkay1818 - May 14, 2012 at 11:38 PM

I wouldn’t say it was that even. If you look inside the numbers, the rangers beat them in every single statistical category. Rangers had a slight edge in the first, devils an edge in the second, and the third was dominant by the rangers. It could have been a 5 or 6-0 game. The devils got absolutely worked. Callahan missed a two on one where he had Marty beat, staal missed a wide open net and McDonagh had Marty beat on that cannon wide open. Add in two ridiculous saves by brodeur and this would have been messy. Rangers are more physically imposing than Philly and are leaps and bounds better on d and goal than Philly. Their game plan that worked last rd won’t work as much. Devils are a real good team though, they’ll adjust.

    • duece430 - May 14, 2012 at 11:57 PM

I thought Devils were better in the 1st and more so in the 2nd, but the Rangers outplayed the Devils by far in the 3rd. Devils had their chances, but Hank closed the door on every opportunity. Devils have to be pissed for wasting 40 minutes of quality hockey and finishing the 20 most important minutes of the game pretty poorly.

    • jpelle82 - May 15, 2012 at 9:31 AM

lundquist stole this game. the devils owned the 1st and 2nd period.
