Holmgren to Bryzgalov: This isn’t Comedy Central

As we’ve previously reported, Ilya Bryzgalov recently opened up about the rough season he had and, in particular, the media scrutiny he endured.

“What I lived through this season I wouldn’t wish to an enemy,” Bryzgalov said – and that’s not the only headline-worthy nugget he’s given this season. If fact, he might have provided some of the most interesting quotes of the 2011-12 campaign.

We’ve gained insight into his personality and learned that, like Stephen Colbert, he has a fear of bears. That’s great and all, but his employers would probably wish he didn’t try to be as quotable as Colbert too.

“His job is to stop pucks and help us win games,” Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said. “It’s not Comedy Central.”

Holmgren took a big risk when he traded away Mike Richards and Jeff Carter while almost simultaneously signing Bryzgalov to a nine-year/$51 million contract. He has a lot riding on Bryzgalov and so far, things haven’t played out like he planned.

“Did he play as good as I expected this year,” Holmgren asked. “I’d probably say, no.”

That being said, Holmgren hasn’t given up on Bryzgalov.

“I absolutely think being here a year will help him,” Holmgren said.

All we know for certain is that one year is in the books and there’s eight more to go on that contract.

If its not comedy central then why is there a “roast of ilya bryzgalov” every time they lose. He should feel lucky he got his name on the cup before signing in philly.

    • jpelle82 - May 12, 2012 at 10:28 AM

beating the penguins in the first round was his second cup.

      • sportsfreak13 - May 12, 2012 at 11:13 AM

i thoroughly enjoyed eliminating the flyers in both 08 and 09 but never considered it more then a stepping stone on the path to the ultimate goal. I love this rivalry though and hope these teams meet in the eastern conference finals next year. I might need to be sedated to watch it but it will be fun to say the least.

      So humongous small !

  2. richieranger - May 12, 2012 at 10:22 AM

Bryzgalov is not for long in Philly…..he was traded for a reason….

  3. wiscoboy - May 12, 2012 at 10:33 AM

    Hahahaha

  4. wiscoboy - May 12, 2012 at 10:34 AM

    Hahahaha!!!

  5. nickynick04 - May 12, 2012 at 10:37 AM

    Hey Richieranger
he was not traded…he was a free agent…..sooo it appears your comment is an absolute lie

    • xavier46 - May 12, 2012 at 4:03 PM

Errrrrrrr NO. His negotiating rights were traded to Philly in exchange for Matt Clackson, 3rd rd pick, and future considerations. Burn… sooo it appears you’re an absolute moron.

Here’s an article pre-contract, see what the precious philly faithful thought…

  6. dirttdiver - May 12, 2012 at 10:53 AM

Richieranger – Nowhere for him to go. He can’t be traded with that contract. Flyers are stuck with him.

  7. GenoPringles - May 12, 2012 at 11:28 AM

Holmgren is the one that should be on comedy central. Total Joke. Thinking that your team could get better by trading Richards and Carter is funnier than any show I’ve seen

  8. jrmehle - May 12, 2012 at 11:29 AM

    Luongo for Bryz straight up.

    • biasedhomer - May 12, 2012 at 2:15 PM

There would have to be a 3rd team involved since Vancouver does not need a starting goalie.

  9. couturierfellatesguys - May 12, 2012 at 11:31 AM

this is sweet music to my ears. the destruction of the filthy flyers starts with the goal tender and ends with a guy that doesnt show up in the second round giroiux. claimed the best player in the world. what a joke. soup can sid will always be the most famous hockey player that ever existed inside of the wells fargo arena/dump

  10. flyers22 - May 12, 2012 at 12:15 PM

I understand the huge rivalry between the flyers fans and basically all other fans but I’m sorry if you know anything about hockey you cant sit here and say this team isn’t one of the best in the nhl every year or that we suck. I hate not winning the cup every year but at the same time I get to watch a team that is successful every year and always in the playoffs in contention for a cup, something a lot of teams dont do. I hate people who say oh when is the last time you won a cup? yeah i know 1975 but i also dont live in the past and dont care if your team won it 4 years ago bro move on! We have some of the best young talent in the game and its only going to get better with experience not to mention if the salary cap goes up to 69 million like its rumored to thats only going to make our team better. The point is this team is going to win a cup soon, we have one of the smartest gm’s in the game and has been on the winning side of every one of those trades. What we got out Richards and carter was unreal. All 4 of those players are huge for us and are only going to get better as they age. Schenn and couturier are going to be stars some day just look at how well they did this year when schenn was hurt most of the season and couturier was on the fourth line. Like it or not this team has a very bright future and couturierfellatesguys you just sound dumb giroux is one of the best players in the world no doubt your just upset at what he did to your baby crosby, knocked him back to the third grade and then sniped fleury like how much more proof do you want haha you are claiming how crosby is the best? when did he show up in the first round? and if you have not figured it out yet the whole team didnt show up against new jersey its a team game not one person and we just got outworked the whole series like we did to you the previous series, thats hockey.

    • sportsfreak13 - May 12, 2012 at 1:17 PM

you no longer can call Crosby a baby after the way giroux acted in the playoffs. Kicking Paul martin with his skate (dirty), whining to the refs, breaking his stick after losing game 5. The things you used to say about Crosby now apply to giroux. The differnce is Crosby did that stuff at 19. Giroux is 24.

      • crosberries - May 12, 2012 at 2:10 PM

Couldn’t of said it any better. Keep going through the media to talk to eachother. Only making things worse.

    • gianthatr - May 12, 2012 at 5:18 PM

But you Flyer Fans all said the same thing about JVR and how’s that turning out?

      • maalea - May 12, 2012 at 8:59 PM

Nothing wrong with JVR that a healthy season won’t fix.

  11. steelymcbeam6 - May 12, 2012 at 12:38 PM

Makes the coyotes look brilliant for not signing bryz to the fat contract and instead signing mike smith for much cheaper…..

    • hiltonandastoria - May 12, 2012 at 12:52 PM

Makes Dave Tippett look like a great coach with a great system

    • broomballking - May 13, 2012 at 10:21 AM

Smith showed flashes of brilliance in Tampa…that’s just how goaltending goes. Just ask Boucher. When yer hot, yer hot and when yer not, yer not!

  12. dkphilly1122 - May 12, 2012 at 12:49 PM

Geno, for someone who hates the Flyers, supposedly, you sure are constantly taking time out of your not so busy day to constantly talk about them, make multiple names about them, and post a comment on every post that has anything to do with the Flyers.

  13. dawglb - May 12, 2012 at 1:07 PM

Nickynick, if I am not mistaken, the Flyers traded for Bryz. They traded for him knowing that he’d become a free agent, with the chance to sign him. Let me know if I am wrong, when you get a chance.

    • xavier46 - May 12, 2012 at 4:05 PM

You are correct, his negotiating rights were traded to the flyers.

  14. steelymcbeam6 - May 12, 2012 at 1:16 PM

Hilton…that same great coach with that same great system didn’t get them anywhere but a first round loss with bryz

  15. dawglb - May 12, 2012 at 1:33 PM

Sportsfreak, you are grasping at straws. Horrible comparison. You want someone to be a bigger puss than Crosby so bad,….. It’s just not going to happen, at least in your lifetime.

    • sportsfreak13 - May 12, 2012 at 5:05 PM

Well that “puss” has a cup under his belt and finished 3 or 5 points behind malkin (Conn smythe winner) that playoff year. What’s giroux have, besides a repeat offender status now.

  16. couturierfellatesguys - May 12, 2012 at 2:29 PM

sportafreak is dead on. girioux is the biggest 24 year old baby i have ever seen play hockey. the dude is just a little girl when things dont go his way. grow up brah and get ur head out of ur ass.

  17. getadealdonealready - May 12, 2012 at 2:55 PM

Bryz was their best player in the NJ series. IMO he performed when the pressure was on, and if he can perform like that and still be loose then who the hell cares. I’m not a Philly or Bryz fan, so to me these comments from Holmgren make it sound like someone is having buyers remorse on that 9 year contract! Good Luck philly you are stuck with Bryz for the long haul.

  18. dawglb - May 12, 2012 at 8:35 PM

The same 3 or 4 Pens fans that keep embarrassing themselves on here…… I actually feel bad for them

  19. dawglb - May 13, 2012 at 9:30 PM

Flyers22, thank you for speaking sense.
