Paul Holmgren knows he has some work to do this summer

May 10, 2012, 11:00 PM EDT

Paul Holmgren

The Flyers’ disappointing exit from the playoffs has provided more than enough attention to Ilya Bryzgalov, but the rest of the team could use some beefing up for a potential Stanley Cup run next season. General manager Paul Holmgren knows all too well that Bryzgalov was only one of many issues.’s Tim Panaccio reports from Holmgren’s end-of-season press conference and finds out the Flyers GM will do what it takes to make things better.

“We’ll look at every way we can to improve our hockey team,” Holmgren said of his approach this summer.  “Do we have as many holes as we did five years ago?  Probably not. We do have some holes and we’re going to try to fill those holes.”

One area that’s going to get help in one way or another is defense. With Chris Pronger‘s future and career in doubt and Matt Carle potentially becoming an unrestricted free agent, some are dreaming big about Predators impending free agent Ryan Suter.

Panaccio suggests Holmgren could wind up going an old route if they’re making a run at a player like Suter by acquiring their rights ahead of July 1. One things for sure, don’t expect the Flyers to be quiet this summer.

Cue the trolls, saying the Flyers are doomed.

  2. bowens3181 - May 10, 2012 at 11:28 PM

The rest of the league should be very very worried about this Flyers team. Not one other team can even remotely match the Flyers insane combination of talent and youth and all of their young players are only going to get better.

    • iamcanadian87 - May 11, 2012 at 5:44 PM

New Jersey matched it pretty good, lol.

Flyers have a lot of good things going for them though, but it will be interesting to see how much roster turnover there is this summer.

Gay ass Pens fans where r u?

  4. phillyphan83 - May 11, 2012 at 12:16 AM

they’re coming don’t worry, we’ll hear that stupid ass “soupcan army” soon enough. funny, this is the only time/place I’ve EVER heard this. wonder who made it up since every single Pitt fan I know has never heard of it either. stupid Pitt ppl.

btw, matt carle…good riddance. he’s so garbage I hope he goes to Pitt.

  5. matthewmacisaac - May 11, 2012 at 4:39 AM

The defense will improve just by Carle leaving. going a man down is better than putting Carle on the ice. He can’t leave Philly soon enough.

  6. neelyisgod - May 11, 2012 at 5:18 AM

They would probably still playing with one of their many back up goalies and having Richards & Carter still. Trying to model themselves after the Bruins with a stout goalie and role players didn’t work.

  7. GenoPringles - May 11, 2012 at 6:53 AM

What a joke of a GM. When will Filthy realize this guy is a moron? Thank God that The Franchise has quality hockey minds like Shero and Lemuiex running the show. The Soupcan Army will rise again, only stronger. Fear The Soupcan Filthy

It is not too late for your mom to abort you

      • ml3939 - May 11, 2012 at 9:23 AM

She already did, that is the problem.

  8. couturierfellatesguys - May 11, 2012 at 9:00 AM

hey remember when filthy got real cocky after round 1 then lost 4 straight to new jersey while “the best player in hockey” didnt fo a damn thing in every one of those games? haha i do. maybe in 2075 ull get a cup. until then soup can army lives on

    • wicky888 - May 11, 2012 at 9:06 AM

I don’t remember what happened in round 1, can you refresh my memory? Did you even watch any of the games from round 1, or were you not allowed to stay up that late?

  9. GenoPringles - May 11, 2012 at 9:11 AM

Can’t wait to see this team continue falling apart this off season. Jagrs gone, pronger is still on the books and talbot is making way too much money. Hopefully this Homer tard learns something by watching Richards and Carter skate around with the cup. Fear the Soupcan chokers.

    • ml3939 - May 11, 2012 at 9:41 AM

Pronger will be on long term disability and they will be free to spend the money allotted for him as they wish. During the regular season Talbot scored 19 goals with 1.75M cap hit while your boy Malkin scored 50 goals with a 8.7M cap hit. Talbot also played defense. Exponentially speaking that is incredible ROI for Talbot.

Did your mom just alternate meals of asbestos and lead paint chips while she was pregnant with you?

  10. couturierfellatesguys - May 11, 2012 at 10:10 AM

did you just compare max talbot to the all mighty geno pringles can? you better get your head out of your ass brah. that smog filled city of yours is really clouding your brain.

    • ml3939 - May 11, 2012 at 11:03 AM

Did I misstate the facts or lie anywhere in my commentary? And you may want to check, Pittsburgh is much higher up than Philly on pollution lists brah.

  11. couturierfellatesguys - May 11, 2012 at 11:19 AM

lets keep comparing the almighty god geno who is going to be on the cover of nhl 2013 to max talbot hahha cmon brah

    • ml3939 - May 11, 2012 at 11:25 AM

Max Talbot is arguably giving more bang for the buck than any player not still playing under their entry level contract. Instead of being a douche and criticizing my valid comparison, let your boy genopringles how far off base he is stating Talbot is making too much money.

      • iamcanadian87 - May 11, 2012 at 5:40 PM

I’ll take the 25 goals and 59 points for $1.5 Million per year that Pascal Dupuis gives the Pens….

      • ml3939 - May 12, 2012 at 1:22 AM

Pascal Dupuis had an excellent season and an argument could be made for him. However, it definitely helped him to play with Crosby, Staal and Malkin throughout the season. Those guys easily assisted on half of his goals. Talbot played with Giroux on the first shift of PKs and that was pretty much it. Many of Talbot’s second shift on the PK were with other players like Wellwood and Voracek. Talbot for the most part scored his goals on the third and fourth line as Giroux merely assisted on 2 of Talbot’s shorthanded goals. Both players were highly productive but I think Talbot was a little more impressive based on where he played in the line up.

    • congratsyouareanidiot - May 11, 2012 at 11:41 AM

His argument holds water. His comparison isn’t Talbot = Malkin. His comparison is 1.75M Talbot = 8.7M Malkin in terms of stats per dollar made.

1.75M for a 3rd liner who scores 19 G is very good for any NHL team.

  12. GenoPringles - May 11, 2012 at 11:56 AM

Talbot can grow a sweet playoff beard, pretty sure that’s why Filthy signed him. Can’t wait to see Geno’s giant Russian pringle can on the cover of NHL 13. They should put junk size in the player stats.

    • melonheadsdaddy - May 11, 2012 at 12:37 PM

I honestly cant stand you or your inability to see anything beyond YOUR smog filled city (3rd highest in the US) but I have to admit this was hilarious. I agree. junk size should go in the stats. Maybe they’d finally strip sid of his C due to his “inverted” man parts. That means its growing inside of him. like a vagina.

  13. mgp1219 - May 11, 2012 at 12:21 PM

    First hole to fill….5 hole.

  14. GenoPringles - May 11, 2012 at 1:25 PM

SID’s junk rating would be much higher than Giroux’s disciple rating. Giving Sid a 99 would be a huge understatement. Soupcan Army 13

  15. jake6881 - May 11, 2012 at 5:37 PM

Flyers have holes but its funny how they were filled until the season started.

1- Pronger going down hurts. He was our tough guy, pp guy, best d man. Can’t replace that!
2- Rinaldo BLOWS as a tough guy and really can’t play hockey at all. Can’t believe I am saying this but bring back Carcillo…lol. just kidding but maybe not.
3- BRYZ was the big hole filled in the offseason but then he wasn’t! Soft minded and needs to be traded to a nicer place then MY HOME TOWN, PHILLY!!!
4- Defensemen just stink in front of the net. Timmo is a beast but that’s it!!

pure skill, tallent and youth are not matched by any team in the east right now accept maybe Washington, but look at what they done with 4 years of superior tallent and skill, NOTHING! If we had 5 chris prongers we would be great but we don’t and we don’t even have one now. G needs to be a better leader JVR needs to step up, he is really our most tallented player. Schen is next! We will win a ton of games but we need to win in the playoffs, thats what counts!!!

  16. couturierfellatesguys - May 11, 2012 at 7:38 PM

u can have our sloppy seconds with talbot. we have too many superstars on our team. the nhl allstar game should just be the pens vs everyone else soup can army 1975
