PHT Extra: Explaining what went wrong for Flyers

May 9, 2012, 7:33 PM EDT

After all those changes on the roster, the Philadelphia Flyers still suffered the same basic result as last year (at least in the playoffs). There are slight differences (better regular season in 2011, one more win in the semifinals in 2012), but similar soul searching could be in order. PHT’s Jason Brough and Mike Halford take on that subject in the video below.

The Devils were better, that’s what went wrong. As a Flyers fan I’m disappointed but you have to credit where credit is due.

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - May 9, 2012 at 7:57 PM

I blame the penguins for being so soft defensively in the first round ! The Flyers did not have to fight for time and space and thats not how playoff hockey is played ! They were disillusioned by the open ice in round one ! I blame the Penguins for the Flyers losing because the penguins were soft !

      • fbothharbaughs - May 10, 2012 at 7:04 AM

        & the 75ers, uh, Flyers, still haven’t won a championship in 37 yrs….

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - May 10, 2012 at 7:58 PM

      • fbothharbaughs - May 12, 2012 at 10:43 AM

Like any coach in Philly (save for Laviolette, who won his championship in Carolina), John also can’t win the big one… So tell your Mom to wipe off her face & get me a clean towel so I can finish doing myself in her/your basement…

Btw, -5 for the incorrect useage of “your”, idiot…

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - May 12, 2012 at 12:03 PM

You can use the towel your father used to wipe his face off when I got done with him ,its pretty worn out though!

      • fbothharbaughs - May 12, 2012 at 10:30 PM

I’ve got no troubles, boy, YOU’RE the 75ers, er, Flyers fan…

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - May 12, 2012 at 12:45 AM

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - May 9, 2012 at 9:03 PM

I have been watching hockey for 45 years and have never seen a forecheck like that there was no way the Flyers could prepare for that ! I had never seen a forechecking at that level ever !

  2. flyeredup - May 9, 2012 at 7:56 PM

    • wicky888 - May 9, 2012 at 8:48 PM

    • wicky888 - May 9, 2012 at 8:50 PM

I liked Richards, great player. Just don’t make him a captain.

  7. bobhpine - May 9, 2012 at 8:50 PM

If the penguins can contribute to filthy fans’ misery even in defeat then I am all for it.

  8. teddybess - May 10, 2012 at 4:25 AM

Have to say I don’t think you can really lay blame in the Flyer camp, the team is solid and the coaching more than adequate. The problem here is with the league and the NHL’s stupid requirement about winning four consecutive playoff series to take out the cup. Maybe they should hand replica Stanley cup’s to every first round winner. Problem solved.

  9. thedavesiknowiknow - May 10, 2012 at 4:37 AM

It doesn’t matter what went wrong….all that matters is that Pierre McGuire is able to make it through this difficult time. May all of our thoughts and prayers go out to him.

  10. matthewmacisaac - May 10, 2012 at 4:44 AM

I think you over simplilfied when you blame Bryzgalov. He may not have had great stats for the playoffs but mostly because the defense in front of him played so poorly. His stats for the first round just weren’t there but he made most of the key saves. In the second round if it weren’t for some superb play by Bryz The Flyers would have been buried. The Devils had tons of outstanding scoring chances thwarted by Bryz. If he didn’t play as well as he did, there would have been no reason to watch any of the third periods. The Devils simply out worked and played faster than the Flyers. The say each playoff round speeds up a little. The Devils were at second round speed and the Flyers were at regular season speed. Flyers- Don’t even make an offer to keep Matt Carle, as he is a terrible d-man. That would be addition by subtraction. The Flyers played clothesline defense- left Bryz hanging out to dry and that is the reason they are going home.

I thought the Flyers were going to easily sweep the Devils. Was I ever wrong.

If Washington beats New York. Which very well could happen. I don’t think many people picked Washington, New Jersey, Phoenix and L.A. to be in the Conference Finals. 3 of those teams have never won the Stanley Cup.
