Kimmo Timonen really thought this was the Flyers’ year

May 9, 2012, 8:51 AM EDT

Claude Giroux, Kimmo Timonen AP

One of the guys you have to feel for on the Philadelphia Flyers is Kimmo Timonen. Timonen is 37-years-old and has a lot of miles on his body which means his window for winning a Stanley Cup is closing. Playing for the Flyers means being part of a perpetual playoff team and having a shot to win it every year.

For Timonen, he really thought this year was the one the Flyers made a run at the Cup as he laments to The Philly Daily News’ Sam Donnellon.

“After the Pittsburgh series I really thought this was our chance,” Timonen said. “Look at the teams that were out. Look at the teams that were in. I thought every team that was still in was beatable.”

Unfortunately for Timonen he was right and his team was the beatable foe for the Devils. With the years whittling away for Timonen and the different injuries he put up with over the season, you wonder how many chances he’ll have left to win it all.

      God, that’s funny and original……LOSER

      • rtrmusic - May 9, 2012 at 9:46 AM

WHat’s funny and original were all the response from Flyers fan bashing on the Pens, calling them dirty and cheap. Funny how all the things you cried and complained about, your team did 10x worse (going for knees, tackling players, random spear shots, etc). Also Rinaldo is the new Matt COoke.

      • chap6869 - May 9, 2012 at 9:49 AM

What’s funnier is that your still on here, 2 WEEKS after your team was eliminated, still crying…NOW THAT’S FUNNY!

      • rtrmusic - May 9, 2012 at 10:10 AM

I’m on here because I’m a hockey fan and love the game regardless of if my team’s in it or not. I’m stoked Philly lost not because I hate Philly, but rather that this will prove to SHero that he needs to change his system. The defense needs blown up, the 3C model needs to go and the run n’ gun offense doesn’t work in the playoffs.

      • chap6869 - May 9, 2012 at 10:20 AM

Then don’t come on here posting stupid sh*t like 1975, I’m more than willing to have a normal, intelligent hockey discussion as long as you’re not a knucklehead.

      • rtrmusic - May 9, 2012 at 10:28 AM

It’s called Karma. Flyers fans did it to Pens fans after the Pens $#*& the bed. Now it’s the Pens fans turn. Also it’s kind of funny that the FLyers played exactly how the Pens played and got beat. Pulled the same crap that the Pens did, fans complained then endorsed the same actions, then the icing had to be the offsides goal last night.

      • ematusko - May 9, 2012 at 10:51 AM

@rtrmusic – your effeminate team was far dirtier in game 3 alone than Philly was in this entire series. We had 1 player suspended 1 game, compared to your 3 players for a total of 7. How does that add up? Nevertheless, we beat your whiny, arrogant, hypocritical team very convincingly, so I just don’t quite get the need for you to shoot your mouth off. Now get outta your momma’s basement, update your resume, and stop filing for extensions on your unemployment.

    • rtrmusic - May 9, 2012 at 10:29 AM

Moreover, I’m just glad that this realignment will keep us together. As much as I despise the Flyers, you gotta respect them. The East would be nothing if not for the Pens and FLyers.

      • chap6869 - May 9, 2012 at 10:39 AM

First off, I never said a negative thing to a Pens fan that didn’t deserve it, Secondly, In all my posts today, did you hear me cry anything about bad Refs or lousy calls? Quite the opposite, the Flyers got their azzes handed to them and deserved the lose, they are a young team and hopefully they learn from this. Finally, I agree, the Flyers-Pens rivalry is fun and wouldn’t want to lose it, it’s what makes sports fun to watch!

      • crashtheboards55 - May 9, 2012 at 11:27 AM

Agreed man. Best rivlary going. Flyers have been kicking our a$$es lately though. Idiot fans on both sides. Pens played like absolute garbage at the wrong time. The only excuse was they sucked. Flyers looked tired and had a lot of injuries to battle. They didn’t play well defensively and it cost them the way it did the Penguins. I personally thought would like to see a lot more respect amongst the players. Too many cheap shots and dirty plays going on. Its ruining the game. I would like to see a panel of players like crosby giroux backstrom callahan parise etc get together for a forum and discuss openly how they can change the game to get rid of the garbage. It has to start with them.

  2. bag217 - May 9, 2012 at 9:12 AM

    He thought wrong.

  3. psudu - May 9, 2012 at 9:18 AM

Rtr, at least get it right…it was saying 75 is incorrect

    • bobhpine - May 9, 2012 at 1:20 PM

Dude are you serious? Before you correct someone, get your own facts straight. 1974-75 was the last time the flyers won the cup. But who’s counting right? When you’ve never actually seen it happen, it must be all the same.

      Nice try though.

  4. jpelle82 - May 9, 2012 at 9:26 AM

that was part of the problem, you thought because you slayed the dragon, the keep was yours. the flyers caught the pens playing their worst defensive hockey in years, got over-confident and took nj for granted. good series for NJ. i have a feeling the ny-wash series is going to 7 so hope NJ gets plenty of rest.

    • iluvwikileaks - May 9, 2012 at 9:49 AM

Actually, Fluery and the Pen’s defense was pretty good all year. Until, the playoffs.

      • jpelle82 - May 9, 2012 at 10:17 AM

thats what i meant, the d was terrible leading into and throughout the first round. the 2 losses to the islanders in a row cost us the #1 seed and were terrible defensive efforts, a bad sign going into the first round where the woes continued. the pens were stout last year and most of this year but they were going through a slump at the worst time of year.

  5. atb4 - May 9, 2012 at 9:32 AM

A lot of the Flyers players have basically admitted they overlooked the Devils this series. It happens, but the Devils played extremely well this series.
As much as I don’t like the Flyers, they have a young team that will learn from this, and I fully expect them to be back challenging for a Cup in the coming years.

And the bottom line is, you can’t win a championship with the defense and goaltending the Flyers and Penguins showed this postseason.

        Flyers – 1975

      • rtrmusic - May 9, 2012 at 9:51 AM

I would happily take being eliminated in the first round this year, if it meant Briere never wins a cup.

      • chap6869 - May 9, 2012 at 2:50 PM

        Pens- 3 cups
        Flyers- 2 cups

Number of times team went Bankrupt from lack of fan interest:

Hey, look at that, you beat us in that category too, hold your head up high iluvwikileaks.

      • icedog97 - May 11, 2012 at 1:20 PM

Here’s the thing that always gets me when a Flyer fan throws bankruptcy at Penguin fans..again…

        1) Take your own advice…move on already.

        2) Fan interest is only part of the equation…and only died down right before the lockout when the team traded (for next to nothing) their star players because they were a financial mess due to bad contracts and a terrible arena deal.

        3) I don’t have early 2000’s population numbers but in 2010, Pittsburgh had 305,000 people in the city proper. Philly had 1.526 million. That’s 5 times as many. And in the immediate surrounding counties, Pittsburgh has 2.3 million while Philly has 6 million in the Delaware Valley area….these things do make a difference. As long a Philly has a much larger population, their fanbase that can go to games is always going to be larger and they will probably never have to worry about attendance.

But of course, you weren’t really interested in having a conversation about those things, were you? You were just interested in getting in a jab or two…right?

  7. tackledummy1505 - May 9, 2012 at 10:02 AM

Lol sorry Kimmo, I would go play for another team. The NHL will never allow a fair game to be called as long as your a Flyer. Hey go to Pittsburg, I heard the NHL likes to invite Crosby to their suites for special time lol. NHL is so bias and last night was proof of that. It’s ashame anybody paid over a $100 dollars to see a team not even given a chance last night to win. Shoot if they weren’t going to call automatic penalty calls against the Devils like breaking the Flyers’ sticks or too many men on the ice against Jersey then at least call nothing both ways. I would’ve been furious to pay all that money for a rigged game. Not to mention Shanahan suspending our best player on an inadvertent shoulder check. I already posted a video of Shanahan describing how and why Rinaldo got suspended early in the season. Saying the only way Rinaldo could deliver an illegal head shot check to a guy 5 inches taller than him was to leave his feet. This infraction was why he ruled Rinaldo guilty of Rule 48. Lol 3 months later his story changes, it’s because Giroux complained to the refs for again missing an automatic call of playing the puck outside the trapezoid. Sorry Giroux but if anything was clearly blatant it was that you guys weren’t going to have any fair games to play and would have an up hill battle this entire series. I wonder if anyone can investigate the NHL like the Black Sox were? Lol NHL=Joke

    • chap6869 - May 9, 2012 at 10:13 AM

Dude, seriously? I’m a Flyers fan and even I can’t agree with you on this one. It’s not the NHL in a conspiracy plot, it wasn’t the refs, hell it wasn’t even Bryz’s fault. The Flyers got outworked, period. Just tip your cap to the Devils and their fans and move on, otherwise, you look like the douchey pathetic Pens fan, still hanging around crying, weeks after their team was eliminated.

      • icedog97 - May 9, 2012 at 5:30 PM

You guys have been crying about Crosby for how many years? Give me a break. We’ll move on from letting you know that your team is no better than any other team and will stoop to the same tactics ALL teams do when they are losing the day that your fanbase decides to move on from whining about Crosby…or the NHL’s secret obsession with the Penguins…or Bettman’s love for Crosby…etc. Oh…I guess that means never! Enjoy the show!

  8. biasedhomer - May 9, 2012 at 10:13 AM

He has one year left, then he is done; he is showing his age in the playoffs.

    • maalea - May 9, 2012 at 7:31 PM

The plan was with Pronger and Mez to cut way back on his TOI. If the Flyers can get a number 1 Dman or Pronger can come back, Mes healthy and Bourdon back, He could be a productive player.

He just can’t log the kind of ice time he was asked to do this season.

  9. crashtheboards55 - May 9, 2012 at 10:16 AM

Wow. Your stupidity grows everytime you post on here. Did you even watch any of the plays in question? Giroux lost his mind and completely targeted the head of zubrus. Plain and simple. Same thing james neal did. Quit making excuses of why the flyers got beat. They played terrible and when they got down they started playing dirty. Funny how you bashed the pens for doing but when the flyers did it you blamed it on a conspiracy by the NHL. Great detective work sherlock.

    • phillyhatesyou - May 9, 2012 at 12:27 PM

you are also an idiot. giroux didnt target the head. did he get the head and deserve his 1 game? yes but dont say he targeted it. he never left his feet nor did he get his arms or elbow up. james neal on the other hand left his feet put his elbows up in what was blatantly an intentional head shot. please dont even compare the two you just make yourself sound dumb. and i would hardly say the flyers started playing dirty. only real questionable hit in last nights game was the rinaldo knee which luckily wasnt that bad. pens are 100 times dirtier than any team in the NHL. congrats to the devils they earned their spot in the conference finals

      • icedog97 - May 9, 2012 at 5:21 PM

I love it…exaggerate much? 100 times? That’s a proven fact in the Philadelphia Flyers Fan Handbook I guess?

      • crashtheboards55 - May 9, 2012 at 8:53 PM

he hit zubrus in the head….what else was he targeting? his elbow? his shoulder? please…he hit him in the head plain and simple. you don’t have to leave your feet to target the head. he got his suspension and did his time. over and done with. oh i am not saying his hit was worse than neal’s or asham’s. those hits were terrible and i stated that when they did it. the pens are dirty the flyers are dirty…every NHL team is dirty. some are better at getting away with it than others. the intentional headshots need to go.

  11. cleverbob - May 9, 2012 at 10:20 AM

I know 1975 is supposed to make us feel bad but honestly it doesn’t. I do feel bad for folks that don’t seam to have anything going for them other than cheering against rival teams that eliminated their own from playoff contention. It was a disappointing season, but I’m not going to spend the remainder of the playoffs trolling around here and chirping any time the Devils lose.

    • chap6869 - May 9, 2012 at 10:22 AM

Exactly, move on already. If I’m on here 2 weeks from now crying about this series, then bash me all you want…seriously, move on guys, you look silly!

  12. ematusko - May 9, 2012 at 10:58 AM

I loathe the Devils…..nowhere close to the amount of hatred I have for Pgh, but they won straight up, and did it the right way. It sucks, but life goes on, unless your handle is rtrmusic. In that case, the best part of your day entails trolling on other team’s topics, and waiting with bated breath for the mail to arrive with your unemployment check.

    • rtrmusic - May 9, 2012 at 11:05 AM

      Internet tough guy making assumptions.

      • rtrmusic - May 9, 2012 at 11:10 AM

Moreover, re-read your posts they’re what you would call hypocritical. Also, I guess it’s fair to assume that you like gay porn, live in your parents attic, have no job, no life and are an overall P.O.S. and worthless to society. Makes sense. See anyone can pull the crap you just pulled. Get a life douche.

      • ematusko - May 9, 2012 at 11:24 AM

I’m actually tough on the Internet and in real life, and I could be wrong on my assumption of your below average social status, but I doubt it. Either way, nobody can deny that my team best your team soundly, in spite of the fact that Crosby refused to finish fights he started, and one of your players pulled hair in a fight.

      • ematusko - May 9, 2012 at 11:29 AM

P.O.S? Ouch! Easy on the profanity sweetie. We can go back and forth all day, and make fun of each other, despite the fact that neither of us can pick the other out of a 2 man lineup. Regardless, the only thing you did get right about me was that I can pull this crap just like anyone else.

    • rtrmusic - May 9, 2012 at 11:37 AM

WHich is worse: Pulling hair or biting someone?!?!?!?

      • icedog97 - May 9, 2012 at 5:36 PM

Pulled hair in a fight…that’s laughable. Adams couldn’t help but pull hair if he was reaching for the neck of Hartnell’s jersey, could he? I thought Hartnell, clearly whining to the ref — ‘He pulled my hair!’ — was the funniest part of the whole exchange.

    • icedog97 - May 9, 2012 at 5:38 PM

This sounds like you are speaking from experience.

  14. ironcity6pak - May 9, 2012 at 11:20 AM

    • maalea - May 9, 2012 at 7:40 PM

You should follow your own advice, Pisswater.

  15. emperorzero - May 9, 2012 at 11:41 AM

The Flyers were emotionally flat the whole Devils series which leads me to believe they felt like they won the Cup when they beat the Penguins. Back in the day, the Avalanche players said somehting along the same lines when they ousted the Wings in the 99 and 00 playoffs. Players can spend all the emotional juice too soon.

  16. tackledummy1505 - May 9, 2012 at 12:54 PM

Ok here’s a fact if it’s not a conspiracy, Flyers are always 1,2, or 3 in total Penalty Kill minutes every year. The Flyers have less games played then the Caps and Rangers in the playoffs, yet we lead the Playoffs in total Penalty Kill minutes. The facts on paper don’t lie and the rules infracted on last nights game are clear. You can call it how you all want. I can guarantee right now that the Flyers will never win a Stanley Cup. I can bet anyone right now the Flyers won’t have a Stanley Cup for the next 10 years and our young guys would be fully developed by then. I’m just tired of seeing the same bias bull crap. Every year and every playoff we have more penalty minutes than any other team. If you actually look at it, we are the only team in the top 8 I think in Penalty Minutes that made the playoffs. I’ve watched this over and over again. The Flyers will never win another Cup. It’s not that I’m bitter or upset by the loss, it’s because I love hockey and the NHL hates the Flyers. If you guys want to call me a cry baby or whatever else, can any of you honestly tell me that the Devils for the 3rd game in a row, had no penalties in the 2nd or 3rd periods lol. That’s like almost in possible to do. No team in hockey history can go 3 games in a row without even accidentally committing 1 penalty. Lol Last night just proved what I thought. You hopeful Flyers fans can keep cheering and hoping, but it’s a joke lol.

  17. tackledummy1505 - May 9, 2012 at 12:58 PM

Funny thing is Pens fans watched our entire series hanging on the Flyers stuff lol. Hey Pens fans you know you had more power plays than us too right? Which means you got beat even worse lol keep diving Pittsburg you’ll get another cup from the NHL. Either that or you’ll go almost bankrupt for the 6th time lol

    • icedog97 - May 9, 2012 at 5:40 PM

Diving…head jerking…falling like you have been shot…I think Briere has all of those things perfected now.

When u run ur mouth best hope the team backs it up or the payback is painful. I noticed the Claude giroux best player in the world talk has ended.

No one said stop watching, but it’s embarrassing that so many of you are frothing at the month to declare victory even though none of you, let alone your team had anything to do with it. Now you’re crawling all over each other to pass judgment that it serves us right because we’re not “keeping it classy”, when it’s plain to see by any impartial observer which team’s fans has kept their composure just by reading the comments here. It’s pathetic, really. Grow up.

  24. icedog97 - May 9, 2012 at 8:41 PM

And why are my comments ‘stupid’? Because you don’t agree with them? I’m pretty sure every comment I made has truth to it.

    Go ahead, read them again.

    Some guys says 100 times worse…ridiculous exaggeration…

Suit costs more money than someone makes in a year…poor attempt at an insult…

Calls out the Pens for diving…tell me how many calls Briere drew that were not legit…at least 3

You always telling people to move on…since when were you elected the blog monitor? You just want to tell people what to do and think…sorry…I don’t buy into your attempt at authority.

Philly fans complaining about Crosby…please…it’s hysterical that a fanbase whines so much about a player they say is a whiner…

I didn’t call you pathetic, douchey, POS…or any of those other choice terms you used. I’m pretty sure nothing I said was that stupid.

You may not like what I said…and call it stupid if you want…but don’t try to claim the ‘high ground’ at the same time you are calling someone a ‘buthurt little biotch’. It makes you sound…stupid.

  25. chap6869 - May 9, 2012 at 9:10 PM

What I said to you was take the higher ground, and everything I’ve said in this post has been spot on as well. I originally came here to congratulate the Devils fans only to see Pens fans acting like Azzes. Need proof, read your fellow Pens fans post up above, wishing for someone to get Alzheimers, really?
I have called out only the Pens fans that have acted like an Azz today, if that hurts your feeling than maybe you’re just like them. Go back and read my posts again, see if I’m wrong!

So, you called me out because you thought my comments were stupid and I acted like an Azz?…or did I mis-understand your last two posts?

I mean, these are your comments above, right?

You are telling me that 2 weeks from now, you’ll take the higher ground (and I should do the same now) but then in the same sentence throwing out your little insults.

And feelings? Feelings have nothing to do with this. My comments concern people who can’t understand simple logic and like to call people names because the internet makes them feel so powerful.

Good luck with the higher ground dude…you have a long hike ahead of you.

I am sorry, but you don’t say that kind of thing. Think it, maybe. But don’t say it to the media. By saying “I thought this was going to be our year” it somewhat implies that you were over confident and/or next year won’t be your year. Neither of which the fans want to hear.
