Report: Claude Giroux to meet with league over Zubrus head shot

According to Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet, Flyers forward Claude Giroux will need to explain himself to Brendan Shanahan later this morning.

Kypreos reports Giroux will meet with the league at 11 a.m. ET today over his late head shot to Devils forward Dainius Zubrus. Giroux’s hit came late in the second period and earned him a two-minute penalty for an illegal check to the head.

Giroux’s hit and now apparent meeting with the league now puts his status for Game 5 in doubt. If the Flyers have to go into an elimination game without their top offensive player, their outlook for survival is bleak. For what it’s worth, TSN’s Bob McKenzie says Giroux’s hit was a textbook Rule 48 violation and the last time we heard that from him was in regard to Raffi Torres‘ hit on Marian Hossa.

Stone cold weber can slam a guys head in to the glass and only get a fine.

  2. ironcity6pak - May 7, 2012 at 9:12 AM

Scum bag, did the same thing in the pens series. Guy gets frustrated and throws a tantrum. Won’t get anything since Ovi was let go too.

  3. sportsfreak13 - May 7, 2012 at 9:26 AM

At least crosby pulled his antics when he was actualy a kid (19). Giroux is whining and throwing tantrums and now illegal headshots at 24. I know the flyers beat the pens and they deserved to because they were the better team. That being said flyer fans should accept the suspension without complaint just like pens fan did with neal. Those hits need to be out of the game. If not then players will try to clean it up themselves and giroux (prior history of concusions) will be marked and the same type of hit will be made on him and those same fans defending giroux will be all up in arms calling for whoever hits him to be banned for life.

Gotta love Philly ! Well, he did it and
Got away with it. Sounds like my 7 year old. But than again it is philly

    • redux12 - May 7, 2012 at 11:27 AM

Go find Malkins blatant headshot on Grossmann from the Pena series. Just search “Grossmann concussion” and you’ll find it.

        No one cares wahhhhhh

  5. tjv027 - May 7, 2012 at 9:29 AM

Ha, listen to the Pens fan complain about superstar treatment. Rich.

  6. malkinrulez - May 7, 2012 at 9:34 AM

Don’t see a single pens fan on this post mention ” star treatment”. Reading comprehension another short coming. 1975

  7. sjsharks66 - May 7, 2012 at 9:34 AM

Anyone remember when he kicked someone on the pens in their series? Haha this kid has anger problems. We can see It after games when they lose (breaking his stick throwing his water bottle) and when he doesn’t get a penalty called for him he try’s to injure another player. The kid is good at hockey…..but is a very dirty player.

    • danphipps01 - May 7, 2012 at 3:34 PM

The hilarious thing about Philly and Pittsburgh is that they’re basically the same team. Incredibly hit-and-miss goaltending? Check. Solid offensive D with fairly evident own-zone problems? Yep. High-flying top-six loaded with star power? Oh yeah. Superstar centre that throws embarrassing tantrums and blatantly ignores the rules whenever it’s convenient for him? We’re four for four.

  8. phinfan527 - May 7, 2012 at 9:41 AM

Before the drop of the puck for the end of the Flyers season Tuesday, I hope the commish let’s Zubrus hit Mr Whiny the same way he was hit and call it even. Devs win game 5 2-0. There’s the sweetest revenge. Send them to their golf outing early!!

  9. kp20520 - May 7, 2012 at 9:51 AM

This was the same kind of hit that got James Neal suspended. The NHL didn’t hesitate in suspending Neal for an elimination game in the previous round. The puck was gone, the hit was very late and directly targeted the head. Giroux will sit for a game.

  10. therealtrenches - May 7, 2012 at 10:08 AM

“flyer fans should accept the suspension without complaint just like pens fan did”

The pens fans didn’t complain? I haven’t laughed this hard in a month. That’s really…REALLY delusional.

    • sportsfreak13 - May 7, 2012 at 10:45 AM

The pens fans who complained about Neal’s suspension are as dumb as flyer fans defending giroux. i don’t really follow the message boards, but all the pens fans I talked to in person all agreed he deserved the suspension and even said they ere shocked it was only 1 game.

  11. iluvwikileaks - May 7, 2012 at 10:12 AM

This Penguins fan is enjoying the Flyers getting owned!

  12. kp20520 - May 7, 2012 at 11:20 AM

Neal deserved it, Giroux deserves a game as well.

Ps…Zubrus is playing well and had two goals last night, is he the best player in the world now? Enjoy the summer flyers fans. Go Kings!

  13. malkinrulez - May 7, 2012 at 11:43 AM

Was waiting for the grossman hit, he is leaning towards the boards as Malkin goes by , the same way Letang was leaning away from the boards against Dallas as he got hit, no penalty on either hit, keep digging

  14. hatetheflyers - May 7, 2012 at 11:53 AM

They don’t have to suspend him but they should make change his name to Claudette

  15. tackledummy1505 - May 7, 2012 at 1:25 PM

This is what I love, other teams fans get a chance to throw a Flyer in the flames and they’re all over it. Giroux through a check, he didn’t leave his feet, Giroux is 5’11”-Zubruis is 6’5″, yet Giroux was aiming for his head lol. You all are a joke and nothing but Flyer haters. The only team that gets unfair judgement is the Flyers. Not once have the Flyers had more Power Plays than their opponents. It never fails. Probably why I haven’t really watched this series. I knew after game 2 that this was going to be a typical holding and grabbing series. Good job Devils, you play the most boring and unskillful hockey. You have 2 cups, no fans, and no money. Good job on a fantastic job. Can’t wait for you all to go bankrupt and move to Las Vegas lol

    • sportsfreak13 - May 7, 2012 at 1:40 PM

Check out how many power plays they had in the pens series also see where they were ranked in power plays in the regular season before making dumb comments. Also didn’t realize being shorter was a argument for illegal hits to the head. Lastly the devils don’t trap anymore so its not “boring”, they forecheck like crazy and win battles on the wall. Don’t comment if you don’t watch the game and just try to jump on the bandwagon next year.

      • tackledummy1505 - May 7, 2012 at 2:07 PM

lol do you know what the trap is? Do you even watch hockey? Yes the Flyers had a lot of Power Plays during the Penguins series. Doesn’t mean the Penguins didn’t have more lol. Once again do you watch hockey? The trap is used in the neutral zone, which the Devils have been doing the entire series. The trap also employs 2 guys at our blue line and 3 guys at their own blue line. When the Flyers go to dump the puck in usually we have 2 players going in deep for the puck. This is where the trap comes into play, 2 of the Devils players hold up the 2 guys going in deep (which is interference), then either Brodeur or the 3rd guy goes for the puck. Then either the 3rd guy or Brodeur usually look to spring one of the 2 forwards at mid ice. If they can’t spring 1 of them, then they give it to the release man to dump in the puck against the Flyers. This is where they have 1 pressure man, 1 Flyers blue line man, 1 mid man, and 2 defenders still sitting on their blue line. I know what the trap is, I’ve been watching it for 24 years. It’s boring and it sucks. There’s no checking involved, no stick handling, and there really isn’t any excitement. The Devils have been doing this forever, because 1-They can’t get any fans to give them money to get great players in there
2- Because they have Brodeur who can stick handle the puck
3- If the Refs don’t call it, then it’s a successful game plan.

Lastly, yes we were very successful with our Power Play during the season, but look at the difference of minutes each game. We played more games with PK time then PP. Especially in the playoffs. Yet if one of our players say anything, it’s we’re whining. Yet if Brodeur says he’s getting interfered with or he’s being touched by the Flyers, it’s we’re playing unfairly and Brodeur should get the respect he deserves. When clearly the Flyers are the only team not really breaking any rules out there. Lastly because Zubruis is a bigger guy, Giroux has to hit higher to land a good check on him, or he can face low blowing on him. Fact is Zubruis went down like he was shot. As soon as the whistle blew and the trainer looked at him, he jumped right back up and skated in a line not more the 2 minutes later. Gees, such a devastating blow. Next time buddy know what you’re talking about before trying to talk to me about it. Devils hockey is boring. Watch Sportscenter for christmas sake. You know how many highlights the Penguins and Flyers Series had? Now look at the Devils-Flyers series, there’s like 5 highlights and then they give you the score. Shoot Barry Melrose didn’t even talk about the game for more than 3 minutes. It’s because the Devils play that grab and hold game and no one wants to see that.

      • sportsfreak13 - May 7, 2012 at 2:27 PM

Ron white put it best ” you can’t fix stupid”. Did you really just reference ESPN to watch hockey highlights? Ask your beat writers and coach if the devils still employ the trap I’m sure they will disagree with you. A trap is when you put all 3 forwards in the neutral zone and leave the dman back. The devils dmen just dont get caught out of position something your not used to seeing. Also zubrus didn’t act anymore then schenn does. That kid could go to the Olympics with his diving skills.

      • sportsfreak13 - May 7, 2012 at 2:29 PM

i meant 3 men at the blue line and 2 in the neutral zone. Which they ARE NOT doing.

    • bergencountyjc - May 7, 2012 at 1:41 PM

Let’s clarify your statements a bit shall we?

First, Devils have won 3 cups – 95′, 00′ 03′ and made it to the finals in 01′ losing to Colorado.

Secondly, “boring and unskillful hockey” evidently wins championships for the Devils. If anything I would think you would find the Flyers boring for going 10+ minute stretches without getting a respectable shot off.

Lastly, we have plenty of fans however Devils management chose a poor location (Newark) for the new arena when their old home in the Meadowlands was bringing a lot more fans in consistently.

Your comment about the power plays seems a bit trivial being that if the Flyers don’t put themselves in the position to called for a penalty, guess what?…..No penalty!

In summation, it’s been a great series and your goalie is right up there with the best in the leagues this playoffs. In fact, he is probably your best player right now on the team keeping them in as long as he does.

      • mj2sexay - May 7, 2012 at 2:38 PM

Lol. Tackledummy way to reveal your own ignorance as it’s pretty much a microcosm of most fans your way.

First of all, the Devils haven’t been playing trap hockey you idiot. 1995 called they want their excuse back. It’s called a forecheck. Know the game. Devils are totally controlling the boards, and driving your D-Men nuts because your D-Men suck and can’t handle a pass (that’ll happen when you’re missing two world class blue-liners). Bryz has actually been one of the best players for the Flyers this series because the Devils are constantly attacking.

A Flyers fan complaining about the officiating. Lol. Do we have to go over all the miscues and the comedy of officiating errors that was Game 3?

Your excuse making for Giroux is hilarious. I’d love to see your reaction if the opposite situation happened and a smaller player like Gio delivered a similar hit to your ginger-boy.

Also, as a veteran of many Devils-Flyers games when 45 percent of the building is in orange, this series has seen Devils fans absolutely defend their own turf. But your point on the Devils not having the money to pay superstars is very well-founded considering they only gave Kovi 100 million dollars, and they’ve already repeatedly said money will not be the obstacle in re-signing Parise.

  16. sweezz - May 7, 2012 at 2:07 PM

Flyers fan here – you can’t do that when you’re down 2-1 in a series with an “A” on your chest, and with the numbers he puts up.

    • ematusko - May 7, 2012 at 2:17 PM

Agreed. Also a Flyer fan — they are probably going to lose the series, fair and square. It’s how you take your medicine and move on. I’m encouraged by the fact that we have a young, up-and-coming team, and with a few pieces, should be a perennial contender for awhile. It sucks, but learn and move on. BTW — we looked like babies last night, but still nowhere near the level of the way the Charlestown Chiefs, eh Penguins played in the first series.
