Photo: Chara, Pacioretty share awkward handshake

May 7, 2012, 4:55 PM EDT

From IIHF communications director Szymon Szemberg comes this shot, taken after Slovakia’s 4-2 win over the U.S. at the World Hockey Championships:

source:

Chara, you’ll recall, sent Pacioretty flying into a Bell Center stanchion on Mar. 8, 2011, concussing the Montreal forward and fracturing his vertebrae.

The hit — and the fact Chara avoided suspension — infuriated Pacioretty (see here.)

Chara later said he tried to reach out to Pacioretty but his efforts for reconciliation were rebuffed. The two eventually talked — though it seemed that, even months after the incident, Pacioretty was still harboring resentment.

From a June 2011 article on NESN.com:

While Pacioretty feels better physically, he’s not mentally over the hit from Zdeno Chara that left him with a concussion and a broken vertebra. Pacioretty is still upset with Chara, to the point where he had to turn off his TV when the Bruins’ captain lifted the Stanley Cup last week, according to The Gazette in Montreal.

Judging by the photo, there’s still a bit of disdain there.

Patches needs to get over it. Either fight him or try to hit him and get it over with.

Why would you try to get by Chara on the outside. Should be pissed at himself for a stupid play … And the stupid designs of hockey rinks.

What a tool. Call the cops if you are emotionally still hurt. Is this a hockey player or a drama queen? Why is he even playing if he is still traumatized? I can’t imagine his teammates have much respect for him. Oh wait, its Montreal….

I’d like to see all the tough guys on this board go after Chara. I don’t blame Pacioretty for still being pissed. Everyone’s lucky he wasn’t paralyzed.

  7. habsman - May 7, 2012 at 10:03 PM

He shook the guys hand. What else did you want him to do?

Unfortunately patch got hurt . Montreal has to get over it. He tryed in vain to beat chara on the boards dumb move cost dearly. Now stop whining about it and put your complaining where it should be on your team. How many 5’8″ 175lb players can you have on your roster and expect anything different your team is a disgrace at the moment stop being mad at everyone else and draft some team toughness or more Scott Gomes types that’s working out for you
