Briere on Giroux suspension: “Somehow, we have to make it work”

May 7, 2012, 6:11 PM EST

Briere Giroux

If there’s one guy the Flyers might look to lead the team after Claude Giroux‘s one-game suspension, it’s Daniel Briere. The 34-year-old is a veteran of over 100 playoff contests and his penchant for scoring big goals will be big as Philly faces elimination in Tuesday’s Game 5.

Briere acknowledges he’ll have to step up and compensate for the loss of Giroux — but stresses the rest of his Flyers teammates have to as well.

“Obviously when your best player is going to miss a crucial game, it hurts,” Briere told Philly.com. “But you know what, it’s our season and there’s no time to sit back and complain. If we did, it would be wasted energy.

“It is what it is and we can’t change anything. At the end of the day, we have to move forward and have to find a way to win.”

Without Giroux — who led the team in regular season and playoff scoring — the Flyers will likely insert Zac Rinaldo in a fourth-line role and lean on its missing secondary scorers for offense. Wayne Simmonds (two points), Jaromir Jagr (one point) and Matt Read (one point) have been invisible against New Jersey, and that’s going to have to change.

“Somehow, we have to make it work,” said Briere. “Everybody has to dig deep. It’s one game. It’s not like it’s the rest of the playoffs without Claude.”

“It’s one game. It’s not like it’s the rest of the playoffs without Claude.”

It is the rest of the playoffs if they lose tomorrow.

  2. bestgingerplayerintheworld - May 7, 2012 at 6:21 PM

This suspension is a shame. I was really looking forward to seeing another tantrum from Claude when Philly gets bounced from the playoffs.

  3. jagrbomb18 - May 7, 2012 at 6:27 PM

blah blah blah…here is whats going to happen…the next 5 posts are going to be posted by people who hate the flyers…followed by a post from either a flyers or devils fan…followed by 5 douches that are going to make fun of that post whose is neither a fan of the flyers or devils..most likely there team was knocked out by one or the other….so heres my post…the fact that ovie and weber were both not suspended for in my own opinion worse hits is a total joke. fans are losing respect for not only Shanahan but the NHL. some thing has to change. i wouldnt mind if giroux was suspended for 5 games, as long as everyone else with a similar offense was suspended for 5 as well. it only makes sense….que the trolls…

    • bestgingerplayerintheworld - May 7, 2012 at 6:42 PM

      Being serious here:
I agree that to this point in the playoffs, there have been a number of hits that deserved a suspension that went unpunished. As you said, something has to change. Now if from this point Shanahan started to be consistent with his rulings, would you agree with this suspension? It is certainly unfortunate to be a fan of the first team who loses a player when the new direction of discipline starts, but I think that Giroux’s hit is a textbook example of what needs to be removed from the game. In order to get rid of the really dangerous hits (like the Torres hit), the league needs to go after the hits like Giroux’s. Whether Giroux is a dirty player or not is irrelevant, this is a case of a player being frustrated and as a result put another person in danger. If the more borderline hits are punished consistently the number of players who let their emotions dictate their actions will drastically reduce.

      • maalea - May 7, 2012 at 9:27 PM

That’s all well and good IF the punishments would be consistent but I have zero faith in that occuring.

  4. polegojim - May 7, 2012 at 6:32 PM

Well then jagrbomb… I’m just going to poke fun at your rant…. which makes about as much sense as the suspension…. to me..

  5. 8man - May 7, 2012 at 6:47 PM

I’m surprised as hell that the Flyers are on the brink. You mean to tell me that the final four could be New Jersey, Washington (sorry Ranger fans, this is for effect), LA and Phoenix? Raise your hand if you did. I certainly did not!

Then again, none of my bets on the Kentucky Derby paid off, so I can’t pick squat!

  6. biffnasty - May 7, 2012 at 7:08 PM

At least no he will have time to get his perm all nice and pretty

  7. sabatimus - May 7, 2012 at 7:17 PM

Giroux’s biggest fault? Not being named Alexander Ovechkin. Am I right, Shanny?

    • Doesnotmatter - May 7, 2012 at 9:34 PM

and playing great against the Penguins. Plus he hit Crosby. Twice, I think.

  8. bobhpine - May 7, 2012 at 7:40 PM

No Danny, it will be the rest of the playoffs without Claude… Everyone’s favorite buck toothed cheap shotting ginger boy

  9. dannythebisforbeast - May 7, 2012 at 7:41 PM

Hey ginger if he started to be consistent now that would still be inconsistent. He just had a chance a day ago with ovechkin and did not suspend him. There is no objectivity what other league shows of video and breaksdown the before during and after of what happened to justify the suspension of a player. NHL is still a laughing stock. The only thing that should matter is the actual hit. Hit to the head 1 game -how simple is that. Who cares if he was mad or not. I mean shanahan bought Neil’s excuse that he didn’t see him and was bracing himself. Irrelevant – hit to head 1 game, 2nd hit to Giroux now you have 2 games. See how easy this is

  10. jagrbomb18 - May 7, 2012 at 7:45 PM

I agree ginger and I understand…it’s like putting in a new rule half way through the year though. Maybe the flyers will use this as a rallying point though. Like hey G isn’t playing tonight so we all gotta step up…we’ll see..if not then we should all be looking forward to next year…should be interesting to see what homer has up his sleeve for D this off season

  11. GenoPringles - May 7, 2012 at 7:46 PM

They can lean on guys like Richards and Carter for some secondary scoring

    • jagrbomb18 - May 7, 2012 at 7:55 PM

who are the pens gonna trade geno…malkin or staal? you better pray they get back what homer
got the flyers for carter and richards…where were you when your team was bankrupt..or were you not a fan until they drafted crosby…

  12. dannythebisforbeast - May 7, 2012 at 8:00 PM

Was that supposed to hurt Geno?? We don’t miss them. If you watched any games you would know that they are not the reason the Kings are still in it. but hey if that passes as an insult in Dicksburgh good for you

  13. jagrbomb18 - May 7, 2012 at 8:03 PM

malkin will become the first player in NHl history to win scoring title and leagues fugliest player in the same year…congrats

    • crosberries - May 7, 2012 at 8:10 PM

Wow you watched 24/7 congrats you can repeat what you hear. Do you think anyone gives a crap what he looks like when he plays the way he does. Obviously Harrell has a small member because his wife had to go find something bigger to satisfy her

    • danphipps01 - May 7, 2012 at 8:11 PM

I don’t know, Ovi might’ve beat him to the punch a few years ago. Guy’s not exactly gorgeous and he sure as hell scored a lot back when he actually tried.

  14. danphipps01 - May 7, 2012 at 8:12 PM

Well, Danny, we’ll just have to agree to disagree. See, I’ve got this wager that it really WILL be the rest of the playoffs. Wanna prove me wrong? Best play better tomorrow night than you did yesterday.

  15. jagrbomb18 - May 7, 2012 at 8:19 PM

you would probably know more about how big hartnells member is then i would since you seem to be obssessed with crosby’s berries too…if you’re a pens fans..im just wondering…what interest do you have in this article….

    • crosberries - May 7, 2012 at 8:28 PM

Oh I dunno an interest in hockey maybe??? Unlike you douche philthy fans I actually do know there are of teams besides philthy and the pens. When is the parade for beating the pens?

  16. jagrbomb18 - May 7, 2012 at 8:35 PM

yeah i understand but your idiotic comments make you all look like morons…we both know pitt fans would have reacted the same way if pitt won….maybe not because they beat the flyers but because they would have had an extra week of a pitt sports team to watch other then the pirates

  17. dannythebisforbeast - May 7, 2012 at 8:52 PM

You have an interest in hockey but only an interest in commenting on Flyer articles. And only in interest in “trying” to insult flyer fans. Next time you make an intelligent point will be the first. Douche

    • crosberries - May 7, 2012 at 8:56 PM

Imglad you like reading my post so much you spend your days looking through all the articles to see what I’ve posted.

      • dannythebisforbeast - May 7, 2012 at 9:18 PM

crosbyballs unlike yourself I REALLY do have an interest in hockey besides my own team
thats why i read most of the articles and comments and never saw anything besides badmouthing philly, like i said if thats what passes the time between you rubbin one out in your moms basement, go for it just keep it down shes tired of hearing you,

  18. dawglb - May 7, 2012 at 8:58 PM

With G, they are 1-3. Sadly, this suspension can’t hurt any worse. Maybe they all dig as deep as possible and find some of that missing scoring. Rinaldo MUST stay out of the box!

    • bobhpine - May 7, 2012 at 9:22 PM

      Rinaldo…ha! Good one dude.

  19. ironcitydonnieiris - May 7, 2012 at 9:00 PM

Here’s a question. Will Shanny keep up the suspensions at the start of next season or will this just become a playoff thing (for the exception of the over the top hits)? Consistency on the suspensions will never happen in my opinion. There will always be a fan that will compare another hit with a suspendable hit somewhere else. Will be interesting to see if the long summer causes amnesia on the hit rules. And that will cause PHT to light up with posts I’d bet (if I were a betting man).

  20. ironcity6pak - May 7, 2012 at 9:24 PM

Bye bye flyers your win against the pens means nothing and your young crew came to bite you in ass. see you next season

    • maalea - May 7, 2012 at 9:35 PM

But we ARE still playing hockey and you have to settle for schadenfreude.

  21. ironcity6pak - May 7, 2012 at 9:47 PM

jagrbomb18 thats your username!?!! before you talk trash about pittsburgh sports and make a username for your self do some research. When you hear jagr’s name anyone with the least amount of hockey experience can’t help but to think Pens hockey. Oh and your comment about Malkin, yeah well at least the Pens can say they won more awards in the last 4 years then the flyers have in last two decades. You guys did have an almost though, if you followed hockey then. That is before the jagr went to Philly.

    • maalea - May 8, 2012 at 10:03 AM

Ironcity6pack? That’s your user name? Naming yourself after piss water beer that. No one with a real job would buy. What a joke.

  22. jagrbomb18 - May 7, 2012 at 10:18 PM

So because a guy played for Pitt what 10 years ago I can’t make a catchy and creative username that involves his name…I know you’re bitter he chose Philly, but wouldn’t you if you were him? The guy wins you a cup and all you morons do is boo him lol no wonder why you guys almost lost your team ..more then once ..don’t forget about you have all your star players man…anyone can tank season after season…the flyers have been a playoff team some thing like 14 outta 15 years…penguins fans and organization are a total embarrassment you guys make me laugh

  23. feva4theflava - May 7, 2012 at 10:22 PM

Yo adrienne, I did it! I knocked out zubrus, oh wait, I’m getting philly’s fictitious hero confused with their not so much hero. Go devils!

  24. leafsfan2020 - May 7, 2012 at 11:18 PM

    Bring back Kate Smith.

  25. ironcity6pak - May 8, 2012 at 7:16 AM

Jagrbomb is def not creative and he HELPED win cups but when someone has a gambling problem like he does its no wonder they let him go. Congrats on making the playoffs for so many years and not making anything of it. Talk about tanking season after season. like I said, almost means nothing. Keep it up, you make your self sound dumber and dumber on ever post. Since jagr won’t be there next year here’s you new user name. JUSTINBRIEREBER18.

  26. ironcity6pak - May 8, 2012 at 7:13 PM

Maalea, You as well are dumb, check you grammar before you post.
