Is Giroux questionable hit on Zubrus suspension worthy?

May 6, 2012, 10:29 PM EDT

The Philadelphia Flyers suffered a major setback with their 4-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils on Sunday. However, that might not be the last bit of bad news they get before Game 5 on Tuesday.

Claude Giroux appeared to make contact with Dainius Zubrus‘ head when he delivered a controversial hit in the dying moments of the second period. You can watch the hit below:

This video is no longer available. Click here to watch more NBC Sports videos!

Giroux received a two-minute minor for his actions, but it will be up to the NHL to decide if the hit is worthy of a fine or suspension. The Devils could not capitalize on the power-play opportunity, but as it turns out, they didn’t need to.

It’s worth noting that Zubrus scored the game-winning goal for the Devils at 17:47 of the second frame. Zubrus did return for the start of the third period, which the NHL will probably consider when they decide what, if any, additional discipline is appropriate.

of course its suspend able. someone must have taken his lady balls.

    dirtiest player in the league.

    • danphipps01 - May 6, 2012 at 10:33 PM

Geno, just post as yourself. You’re only wasting your own time logging in and out of accounts like this. We know they’re all you. Seriously. It’s pointless.

      • girouxhasladyballs - May 6, 2012 at 10:34 PM

the funny thing is, they aren’t. thats how many people hate philly. and this is proof positive as to why.

      • crosberries - May 6, 2012 at 11:07 PM

Agreed. Was giroux playing ref or center tonight? I couldn’t tell

      • pbhatesphilly - May 7, 2012 at 1:17 AM

Did you say you hate philly, who doesn’t t. What’s not to hate, Philly fans are THE biggest bandwagon fans ever. When they win it’s ooooh knock, knock. And when suck the joint up (most nights) you leaches boo your own team! That said he obviously should be suspended, one game is plenty, that would be for the remainder of the season!!

      • flyerfan48 - May 7, 2012 at 8:22 AM

ok pbhatesphilly, you think the Flyers fans are on the bandwagon. Unlike your city “pittsburgh”…. I think i feel bad for you, because you’ve been a fan for sooo loong… If you look at the amount of fans before crosby came in, you guys were about to go bankrupt. As soon as he and Malkin came in, the Pens got better, and all of a sudden, the stadium got full of fans.
I don’t even know why, is it of 2 cup runs, and 1 cup.

        Man, beats me

      • flyerfan48 - May 7, 2012 at 8:22 AM

  2. ihateclevelandandphillyandbaltimore - May 6, 2012 at 10:31 PM

No need for a suspension he didn’t launch, besides he’s about to be launched into the offseason.

    • tfoz5150 - May 6, 2012 at 10:33 PM

I agree he never left his feet

      • jpelle82 - May 7, 2012 at 8:13 AM

rene bourque didnt leave his feet when he took out backstrom this year. he clearly targeted the head…only difference was elbow instead of shoulder. this is exactly what james neal did to giroux in the first round. 1 game is fair. he did it maliciously out of frustration. and people say crosby is a crybaby, they need to watch giroux talk to the refs

      • darenpuppa31 - May 7, 2012 at 8:38 AM

I was going to say, Giroux pretty much encompossed what Philly fans were complaining about with Crosby and Neal all in one shift. Non-stop chirping to the refs, and then he tries to take Zubrius’ head off. But, you know, only Crosby argues a call with the refs, and only Neal does stupid things when he gets frustrated. Giroux is above all of that…

    • polegojim - May 7, 2012 at 12:05 AM

No suspension… unfortunate, but a typical hockey hit.

Too bad Flyers are playing so poorly… this kid is fun to watch.

      • jpelle82 - May 7, 2012 at 8:15 AM

are you on crack, that is not a typical hockey hit. its a shoulder to the jaw, he raised up from underneath a guy to hit him in the face. he didnt make contact with the body at all – its called “body check” not “head check” for a reason

      • polegojim - May 7, 2012 at 10:18 AM

No crack and you’re probably right…. it was MUCH softer than most hockey hits. No launch, no stretch out to maximize impact. Intended shoulder to shoulder.

  3. deathmonkey41 - May 6, 2012 at 10:32 PM

Flyers are thugs and usually get even more dirty when they’re losing. Typical scumbags.

    • tfoz5150 - May 6, 2012 at 11:14 PM

Thugs huh. Like Marty beating on the back of JVR’s head in game 1? Good assessment

      • crosberries - May 6, 2012 at 11:25 PM

Wahhh just like giroux did all night

      • pbhatesphilly - May 7, 2012 at 1:19 AM

        Boo hoo loser.

  4. martysbetter - May 6, 2012 at 10:36 PM

“Claude Giroux appeared to make contact with Zubrus’ head when he delivered a controversial hit in the dying moments of the second period.”

    Appeared?

There’s no question he made contact with his head, its too bad you didn’t post the lead up to the hit where Giroux was knocked down, got mad, and went on a temper tantrum up the ice, punched Elias, slashed Zajac, and then went for the headshot on Zubrus.

Its so pathetic how this is what it has to come to for Philly to get into the game.

    Best player in the world?

Fun fact: Martin Broduer has more even strength points than Claude Giroux in this series.

  5. danphipps01 - May 6, 2012 at 10:37 PM

The only reason for Giroux to lower his shoulder like that was to get it under Zubrus’ jaw and jack it into him. It wasn’t just an obvious head contact, he even planned it out for Christ’s sake. I mean, it’s one thing for a guy to thrust a shoulder forward a bit on a hit, but to go under and spring-load yourself into a guy’s chin like that? If Simmonds or Hartnell had done that you’d see them lose multiple games.

That having been said, watch as Giroux’s get out of jail free card nets him nothing at all.

  6. ihateclevelandandphillyandbaltimore - May 6, 2012 at 10:39 PM

Don’t fret Philly fans. You won the cup in the first round.

    • crosberries - May 6, 2012 at 11:11 PM

“Remember that summer we beat Pittsburgh back in 2012″? You’ll all say

      • flyerfan48 - May 7, 2012 at 8:27 AM

You’re acting like beating the Pens was the best thing that ever happened to us… You just have nothing to do, but to hate on the Flyers since they beat your team. The pens weren’t a tough defensive team, and the Flyers’ system was better than the Pens. Just like the Devils system is working a lot better than the Flyers.

  7. jaybyrd99 - May 6, 2012 at 10:40 PM

Should he be suspended a game – of course . However in shanahan’s world no injury no suspension . I’d be surprised if he even gets a hearing.

  8. drewsylvania - May 6, 2012 at 10:46 PM

It all depends on whether Shanny checks the box for “Ovi Treatment” instead of “Rafi Treatment”.

Really, just a total joke all around.

  9. jagrbomb18 - May 6, 2012 at 10:48 PM

Marty’s better…you’re team is up 3-1 and all your posts are about how dirty the flyers are…what’s your deal? What about that horrible goalie interference call on Hartnell? I’ve never see someone cry so much after winning…

    • danphipps01 - May 6, 2012 at 10:53 PM

Really? I haven’t heard Philly stop talking about Pittsburgh yet.

      • tfoz5150 - May 6, 2012 at 11:16 PM

I think its the other way around. Some people need to get jobs

    • pbhatesphilly - May 7, 2012 at 1:22 AM

Shut the f up, quit your whining. You stinking Flyers fans cry every time anything happens. Trolls, all of you!

      • pbhatesphilly - May 7, 2012 at 1:24 AM

My last post was directed at jagrbomb18.

      • flyerfan48 - May 7, 2012 at 8:30 AM

Here we go again. You are complaining about about Philly fans crying… When do they cry, please explain. Because I clearly happen to be lost in the Flyer fan world. It’s hockey, get over it.

  10. Stiller43 - May 6, 2012 at 10:48 PM

Should be one game or two games. No real injury means this will be 0 games though. Go jersey.

  11. atb4 - May 6, 2012 at 10:51 PM

I don’t think it’s suspension worthy. However, despite the 2 points, Giroux didn’t put himself in a very good light tonight. Clear head shot (intentional or not) way after Zubrus got rid of the puck, and lots of chirping at the refs.

    • jpelle82 - May 7, 2012 at 8:23 AM

he looked worse than crosby with the whining

  12. phillynac - May 6, 2012 at 10:52 PM

He wasn’t mad because he was knocked down. He was mad because Marty played the puck illegally and should have been penalized but don’t let the facts get in the way of you being a moron.

    • pbhatesphilly - May 7, 2012 at 1:26 AM

Heybphillynac Get your pacifier out cry baby!

      • phillyloveallday - May 9, 2012 at 2:51 PM

he is just pointing out that brodeur played the puck out of the trapezoid which is a penalty if you didn’t know. Not that it would have affected the series but brodeur definitely got a few questionable calls in his favor.

  13. ihateclevelandandphillyandbaltimore - May 6, 2012 at 10:55 PM

Why would they stop talking about Pittsburgh when they clearly defeated them for the cup. There proud of there accomplishment.

    • flyerfan48 - May 7, 2012 at 8:34 AM

I didn’t read one comment in this article when the Flyer fans talked about The Pens…. It’s you who can’t get over the fact that you’re team lost. Get over it, move on, and wait a whole summer till your next season.

  14. rehmer2389 - May 6, 2012 at 10:58 PM

Enjoy the wins while u can get them. When parise’s gone next year and u have no goalie we wont be having these discussions

  15. obamablowz - May 6, 2012 at 11:00 PM

    No

  16. howardforvezina - May 6, 2012 at 11:03 PM

Definitely should be suspended if they really want headshots gone. Pittsburgh, St. Louis do stuff like this when they are down. It is sad that he did this but Zubrus got back at him with the EN goal.

  17. phillynac - May 6, 2012 at 11:09 PM

The flyers are so young that this season is gravy. Beating Cindy and the pens made our season

    • bestgingerplayerintheworld - May 7, 2012 at 12:39 AM

I guess when you haven’t won the cup since 1976, you start thinking a first round playoff series means something. If you ask Ted Leonsis, I’m sure he can give you the name of the guy who makes all their banners.

    • pbhatesphilly - May 7, 2012 at 1:30 AM

Wow, how contrite you stinking pieces of crap have become now that the end is near. Was nt but a week ago that the cup was in your back pocket! Just because this season went well, don t expect it to happen again. Lots of luck paved the way this year. See you when the flyers are relavent again, 20 years r so sounds right.

      • phillyloveallday - May 9, 2012 at 2:46 PM

This post just shows your lack of knowledge about hockey. I’ll be the first to admit the Devils dominated the entire series and deserved to win hands down. However, to say they were lucky this year and won’t be successful next year is absolutely asinine. The Flyers are loaded with young offensive talent with their core group of plays 24 years old or younger which means they will most likely continue to get better and their prime is most likely two-four years away. Giroux (24) is still top 5 player in hockey while schenn (20) Couturier (19) Voracek (22), Simmonds (23), JVR (23), Read (25), and Wellwood (22) are all 2-5 years away from their prime but are already above average offensive players and at least half of them will probably develop into 60-85 point scorers year in and year out. The flyers offensive potential is unlimited and I honestly did not expect this much production from all these young kids and if you remember before the season many people were saying the flyers may not even make the playoffs. The future is still very bright for the flyers despite the pathetic finish to the season.

  18. quonce - May 6, 2012 at 11:12 PM

2 games. if you watch the entire shift, this is done with malice. no, he doesn’t leave his feet but clearly targets zubrus head.

shanahan will mess this up and not even give a hearing, because well, that’s how these things work.

Two games is the correct number for this hit.

  19. napoleonblownapart6887 - May 6, 2012 at 11:15 PM

No injury and no history (that I’m aware of) with supplemental discipline probably means he shouldn’t get suspended, or at ABSOLUTE most a single game.

With that being said, Shanny hasn’t let facts, or logic, or what should happen get in the way of him handing out punishments so far….

  20. ihateclevelandandphillyandbaltimore - May 6, 2012 at 11:15 PM

Pathetic that you think you’ve had a good season because you won a first round series. I wouldn’t expect anything less from a Philly fan.

    • phillyloveallday - May 9, 2012 at 2:53 PM

i would not call it a successful season but despite the horrible finish they still exceeded almost everyone’s expectations. remember after the carter and richards trades? a lot of people were saying flyers would not even make postseason

  21. flyerscup2010 - May 6, 2012 at 11:21 PM

he won’t get a suspension because hes a star player, zubrus got up, and he has no history. since those are the only things that shanahan cares about. but it was a stupid hit for him to take, and it bothered me that he complained about the penalty the way he did. he’s playing himself out of next year’s captaincy right now.

    • jpelle82 - May 7, 2012 at 8:26 AM

he isnt going to lose the captaincy. he looks like a perfect candidate, a captain should be emotional.

  22. heyzeus143 - May 6, 2012 at 11:34 PM

    1975

  23. vindicatus - May 6, 2012 at 11:36 PM

This hit was the definition of “intent to injure,” and rightfully deserves a suspension. We all know what’s going to happen, though. I’m surprised there’s even an article on this. I thought the media would just ignore it like Coburn’s headbutt from last game.

    LET’S GO, DEVILS!

    • tfoz5150 - May 6, 2012 at 11:39 PM

He ws just trying to knock him off the puck. No intent. He caught him up high.

    • balewsquare - May 7, 2012 at 12:48 AM

Yes! How did nobody care about the Coburn headbutt?!?

  24. heyzeus143 - May 6, 2012 at 11:37 PM

just watched the video, that’s a chump move on giroux’s part, thought he was supposed to be above that stuff

  25. haleyistheman00 - May 7, 2012 at 12:21 AM

Sounds like a lot of haters in here. Giroux isn’t a dirty player. He was pissed they didn’t call Broduer for delay of game when he played the puck in the trapezoid. If/when the devils win this series I hope they win it all.

  26. kotteintheslot - May 7, 2012 at 12:22 AM

Gained a lot of respect for Giroux in the first round with the leadership he showed and quickly losing it in this round. I guess it’s easy to be classy when you’re winning….

    • stakex - May 7, 2012 at 12:40 AM

There is no such thing as losing classy. If your losing classy, you never really cared about winning…..

  27. mungman69 - May 7, 2012 at 3:17 AM

Man, a lot of hate in Jersey. You mock other fans them act just like em.

  28. mungman69 - May 7, 2012 at 5:40 AM

    THEN act just like them.

  29. joewilliesshnoz - May 7, 2012 at 6:28 AM

Maybe the Philthadelphia Scumbags can learn how to play real hockey , this soon to be off – season !

  30. sjsharks66 - May 7, 2012 at 7:35 AM

He was whining to the refs and when he didn’t get his way charged his shoulder in to zubrus’s jaw. He needs at least 1 game. If he doesn’t get any then the “star player treatment” is def. a real thing.

    • jpelle82 - May 7, 2012 at 2:40 PM

it was like watching a grounded 4 year old get mad and slam their bedroom door. his little gay hair flying in the wind “i’ll show you referee! blam! take that! I’ll show you, you better listen to me next time!”

  31. eggserino - May 7, 2012 at 7:56 AM

Of course this is a hit worthy of supplemental discipline. Shoulder contact directly to the jaw. This check is similar to the one that Joe Thornton made on David Perron. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTyBm2qrFrw

The question is: Does the league have the balls to take Philly’s best player out of the lineup in the playoffs?

The league seems to want it both ways. They want to say that they are eliminating checks to the head, but then they are not addressing them as they happen, especially when it involves a marquee player (see Ovechkin, Weber, and now Giroux). Seems to me that, because it was Giroux, they won’t do anything about it. That’s the precedent being set.

It sure does make it harder for the league to maintain it’s stance on the Torres suspension when the league chooses not to act on other head checks.

  32. tobie1003 - May 7, 2012 at 8:29 AM

Definetly should be suspended! He was mad about a non call at the other end of the ice, went up the ice acting like a baby , and took it out on anyone in his way!! Cheap shot if there ever was one!!

  33. hatetheflyers - May 7, 2012 at 8:46 AM

His name is now and for ever more Claudette

  34. malkinrulez - May 7, 2012 at 9:24 AM

From all the whining by Philly fans during pens series you would have thought they were in charge of player safety. Now one of their own on the hot seat and not a word or it was “a hockey play”. Was coburns head butt a hockey play? And he got away with it, so by Philly logic the flyers must be bettmans choice.the reality is just like the pens the flyers are now frustrated and players do things out of character. I could act like the douchebags from Philly and call them dirty and classless and giroux soft for disappearing but I know better. Hopefully flyers fans remember this for the future. Karma

  35. joewilliesshnoz - May 7, 2012 at 10:01 AM

    Claudette and the Philthy Vagina’s , I like it ! ! !

  36. mbernardo8 - May 7, 2012 at 10:10 AM

Should be 1 game suspension just like Shea Weber should have got for his antics on Zetterberg, lay the hammer down shanny!

    GO LEAFS GO

  37. pbhatesphilly - May 7, 2012 at 10:17 AM

A shout out to flyerfan48. Who said I was a pens fan? I’m a hockey fan, you think because the flyers beat the pens one series (who cares about the run in pit in reg season, who cares, irrelivent) that you are the moral conscience of the hockey world. Like I said in one of my original posts, it’s not neccessarily the flyers that bother me, it’s the fans of philly. There may be some good philly fans but the bad ones are sooo far and away the worst fans in all of sports that it makes all of you despicable. Throwing up on another phillies fan/daughter, needing a court room at the vet, throwing ice balls at santa for crying out loud and the most recent, cheering when noah from the bulls got hurt. If your gonna go gutter fan might as well go full hard on gutter!! Nice job philly fan. And flyerfan 48 if i were a pens fan I surely would gut myself after losing to such a bunch of cheats. Broad Street Bullies, bullsh-t. I’ll bet none of you cowards would run your mouth on the street to me or any other hockey fan. Knock knock knock, that’s elimination knocking!!! See you next year.

  38. sjsharks66 - May 7, 2012 at 10:31 AM

Pbhatesphilly, don’t forget the flyers fans who jumped the rangers fan after the winter classic!

    • pbhatesphilly - May 7, 2012 at 10:51 AM

      My bad, nice call.

      • pbhatesphilly - May 7, 2012 at 10:55 AM

But i’m sure philly fans will say ” well ya know its because brodour did soemthin shady and ya know parisi is going to leave next year. Whatever blah blah blah. Knock, knock, knock….thats elimination knocking!!! Til next year sore losers.

  39. dkphilly1122 - May 7, 2012 at 10:42 AM

Giroux hit his head definitely……never left his feet. Suspension worthy, definitely. Shanahan set the precedent with the Shea Weber and OV hits though, so he won’t get suspended. Also, he was complaining before that about Brodeur playing the puck outside the Trapezoid and not getting a penalty. It’s no biggie either way, both teams get missed calls it’s part of the refs being human. That being said I still think the Flyers will win the series in 7 as hopefully Mez’s back miraculously heals enough so he can play, and if not there’s always next year. They got a young great team for years to come and no one knew they’d be this good this year, especially without one of the league’s top D man!! If Jersey wins they deserve it, I give respect when it’s due.

  40. ajsjr40 - May 7, 2012 at 10:46 AM

Giroux should be gone for a game or more. With all the concussion talk in sports these are becoming no brainers (no pun intended). The player delivering the hit needs to be aware of his contact point and if its the head expect to sit for a few games. Very irresponsible and selfish on Giroux’s part.

  41. pbhatesphilly - May 7, 2012 at 11:00 AM

You stinking philly fans, you say you give respect where its due. Are you kidding me, when the flyers are winning you won’t shut up and now “we have a young team and and next year will rock” Why don’t all of you just ramp it down, pack it in for the year and crawl under your welfare rock!

  42. zinfman - May 7, 2012 at 11:33 AM

2 minutes..yes! But the hit was nowhere near the Ovechkin hit on Saturday. That should have earned at least 3 games! Again it seems that the lack of consistency in refereeing is killing the sport.

  43. pbhatesphilly - May 7, 2012 at 1:29 PM

By the way, outstanding series Devils! Keep the hammer down and crush the flyers spirit (their fans have already given up on them). Good luck the rest of the way, and for flyerfan48 GO PENS!!!!!!! Now your not sure what to believe, is he a pens fan or philly hater! Rest assured I AM a philly fan hater!!

  44. jagrbomb18 - May 7, 2012 at 1:36 PM

That fact that there is any discussion of a suspension for this love tap of a hit is ludicrous. PB I dunno what your problem is really. I’m not crying at all just saying what everyone saw. I’m not saying the flyers have out played the devils and lost because of some missed calls or cheap plays. The devils are out working the flyers and dominating every game…it’s painful to watch..I’ve hated brodeur since I first started watching hockey…He crys whenever he his touched and he did it in the beginning of the series. His own player pushed Hartnell into him and Hartnell gets 2 minutes…I don’t hate the Devils but I hate Marty brodeur…define troll…because I don’t come on here bashing other teams…like someone has been doing in every post you asshole

    • pbhatesphilly - May 8, 2012 at 12:59 AM

My problem is you and every Philly fan out there, bandwagon, fairweather fan whatever you prefe to call it. Like I as before when things are going well you all won’t shut up, now you re all this is gravy who thought we would have done this well? This well is so far 2 games better than the pens. Wow that’s crushing it! To be quite honestly the pens will be in the mix for a cup for the foreseeable future, the flyers not so much. As far as troll I’m mocking you Philly fans, you guys say it all the time. And watch your mouth cuss bucket your moms not going to tolerate that language, either stop talking like that or no more tickle time (wink, wink) when mommy tucks you in!

    • pbhatesphilly - May 8, 2012 at 1:02 AM

And by the way a…hole(wow I feel tough when I say that) pay attention I’m not bashing the flyers, it you phily fans that disgust me!

      • pbhatesphilly - May 8, 2012 at 1:05 AM
