Poll: Should Alex Ovechkin be suspended?

May 5, 2012, 5:31 PM EDT

Nicklas Backstrom, Alex Ovechkin AP

Alex Ovechkin is again getting a lot of attention only this time around it’s not for the goal he scored in Game 4, but for the controversial hit he put on Dan Girardi instead.

Ovechkin caught Girardi with a hit through the zone in which he left his feet to deliver a blow that at first appeared to be shoulder-to-shoulder but Girardi claims he was hit in the head. While Caps coach Dale Hunter believed it was “incidental contact” we’re curious what you think.

Should Ovechkin be suspended for his hit? The overwhelming suspicion after the game is Ovechkin will not see supplemental discipline from the league, but with him having a not-so clean record for hits, is that the right move to make? Let us know in our poll.

    I’m biased, I admit that. Here’s what I see.

The puck is not there, He leaves his feet, He hits him in the head, and he’s a repeat offender.

That is the exact description of the Torres hit, so why is this one getting a pass?

    • kotteintheslot - May 5, 2012 at 6:14 PM

puck is at his feet and the head was not the principal point of contact. that right there is the definition of a 2 min minor for charging. nothing more nothing less.

      • afc22 - May 6, 2012 at 11:02 AM

he skated right past the puck…no intent to play it, just to deliver a hit. and i wouldn’t have a big problem with that since it’s the playoffs, but he left his feet AND made contact to the head.

sorry this one would be a no brainer if it was a 3rd line winger doing that to Ovechkin.

the reality is there are double standards. the league is crystal clear about that and fans just have to get used to it

You left out one part, Girardi Isn’t being carried out on a strecther, I have no preference toward either team but seems all yes, your post does show your biased conviently leaving that part out.

  3. mj1818 - May 5, 2012 at 6:15 PM

It’s completely irrelevant if he didn’t leave on stretcher they are trying to do away with those types of hits. Ovechkin has done this many times throughout his career and the league needs to be consistent in handing out suspensions for the betterment of the league, not just a single star.

he left his feet… so yes… but with the punishments handed down so far this post season nothing will surprise me

  5. bergeronforselke - May 5, 2012 at 6:30 PM

Aiming high, leaves his feet….repeat offender who happens to always launch when he held someone…..1 game

  6. ray21230 - May 5, 2012 at 7:15 PM

I am sorry is this the NHL or the NBA, he was penalized they couldnt score on us, now leave him alone if you want to watch a sport that doesnt allow hitting then watch something else these are the playoffs

  7. chip56 - May 5, 2012 at 7:21 PM

All you need to know is this – if Girardi had hit Ovechkin like that it would be a 3 game suspension.

  8. steviep23 - May 5, 2012 at 7:25 PM

    A 2 minute minor shouldn’t warrant a suspension.

    • hockinj25 - May 5, 2012 at 7:52 PM

Torres didn’t get any penalty and he got 25 games. The call on the ice shouldn’t effect the suspension.

  9. bruins2011 - May 5, 2012 at 8:07 PM

ovi is an extremely dirty play, he’ll never get called for anything thanks to his “superstar” status. same goes for Crosby and I’m sure others

Just hearing this parasite’s name makes me sick to my stomach. Ovechkin is a childish, spoiled, narcissistic, under-achieving, over-paid, lazy, moody, repulsive looking, uneducated, simplistic, boorish, predictable, self-centered, vain, egotistical, filthy idiot who has a penchant for “holidaying with men” in Florida. Not only is it a travesty and a disgrace that he’s the highest paid player in the NHL … as well, he’s a complete disgrace to all of the glorious Soviet great who’ve preceded him ! Send this idiot and Radulov to the salt mines now !

ps: here’s what glorious Soviet hockey was meant to be:

    • hockinj25 - May 5, 2012 at 9:42 PM

So Soviet hockey is one guy skating the puck up the ice, not passing, and going through swiss cheese defense?

      • blomfeld - May 5, 2012 at 11:42 PM

        Swiss Cheese ? …

sorry there pal, but that would be “Canadian” cheese who Kharlamov skates through ! :)

      • hockinj25 - May 5, 2012 at 11:48 PM

Sorry, I don’t know any Canadian cheeses that have lots of holes.

      • blomfeld - May 6, 2012 at 2:11 AM

        Roberto Luongo ? :)

Ranger Fans want him suspended then they’ll have a chance. That’s a proud way to wins series

  12. danphipps01 - May 5, 2012 at 11:36 PM

According to the rules regarding legal and illegal hits, yes. According to the ProCapitalsTalk bandwagon, no. Aaaaand, cue thirty-odd downvotes with not a single one of them willing to actually justify their delusion that this was a legal hit.

  13. gibbstastic - May 6, 2012 at 12:29 AM

he was attempting to play the puck. the puck got away from him (pretty typical) and then Girardi was coming towards him. He left his feet, but i don’t feel there was any intent to injure here. He was protecting himself, left his feet and got a minor. I think the call on the ice was good, as well as no suspension.

all u New Yorkers are cry baby’s the best team won transplanted from there go caps beat them we

  15. choppaman - May 6, 2012 at 11:31 AM

One comment states with a suspension to Ovechkin, it would make it an easier on the Rangers. I say leave that punk in the game. Rangers are the better team anyhow. LET’S GO RANGERS! Dan, shake it off man. Next time zig then zag and let this scum do a faceplant with the ice.

  16. cspsrbums - May 6, 2012 at 12:10 PM

Afc22 what game were you watching
Ovi tried to play the puck with his feet I believe he did touch it he saw the hit coming And laid one instead contacted the shoulder first with one foot still on the ground and slid up to the head. How many PP do you all need you can’t score on them. Okay let cry about suspending players so we can have a chance. You are pathetic they lost accept it you sound like Torts and you are embarrassing you self please stop They lost
