Flames’ coaching search still in “first inning”

The Calgary Flames are nowhere near to hiring a new coach to replace the departed Brent Sutter.

Or, as GM Jay Feaster puts it, “We’re in the first inning of a nine-inning baseball game, if you will.”

Feaster says the club is still in the process of collecting a “master list” of names, after which the candidates will be cut down to “five or six people we would like to pursue and have conservations with.”

Among the potential candidates, according to the Calgary Herald:

—- Troy Ward, coach of the Flames’ AHL affiliate (Abbotsford Heat)

—- San Jose coach Todd McLellan, if the Sharks decide to go in a different direction

—- Bob Hartley, former Avalanche coach who Feaster is close to

Not a real inspiring list yet, but whoever it is I hope they have the Flames playing more offensively minded, it was painful this year to watch them go 10 minutes at the start of periods without even getting a shot…which is something they did routinely, especially down the stretch.

One interesting name that could come available, Joel Quenneville, according to Glenn Healy neither the Hawks or Quenneville would be disappointed with going their separate ways at this point.

Why no one has given Hartley another chance in the NHL is beyond me. He had a piss-poor roster overall to work with in Atlanta, and won a Cup in Denver. And yet he’s been out of the NHL for years- I’ll never understand why.

Tom Renney is sitting on pins and needles because his contract expired, and the Oilers haven’t moved to renew or re-sign him. Apparently they are waiting to see who might come available in the off-season. If the Sharks let McLellan go, both Alberta teams would be interested in having him as coach next year.

I’d suggest Brian Sutter There were six Sutters who played in the NHL, they haven’t hired all of them yet.

Brian made his way through Calgary in the late 90’s, he didn’t have a good record here. Let’s see Brian, Darryl and Brent have all coached the Flames, Rich works in Flames scouting, I don’t think Ron has been a part of the team yet, and I can’t remember the 6th one.

According to Wikipedia, Brent, Brian, Darryl, Duane, Ron and Rich were the six to play in the NHL, and the seventh Sutter, Gary, was supposedly the best of them all but didn’t want to leave the farm.

I doubt that they’ll select Duane to coach for them, since apparently he’s a scout for the Oilers. Guess they have to go non-Sutter for coach.

PS. According to Wikipedia, Ron is a scout for the Flames, while Rich is a scout for the Coyotes.
