Yeah that contract is a good old Sather special. He did the same thing with Drury that year… signing both of them the same day. Neither one was a big time goal scorer, but thats what they were expected to be with the Rangers. It was an awful mistake then, and it looks even worse now.

With that said, Gomez does have a place for the right price. He has speed, and he can make plays… just not $7.5 million worth of speed/play making.

He was making too much money for the Rangers a few years ago. So they put him in the minors so his contract wouldn’t go against the Rangers cap space right? If that’s the case, the Canadiens should do the same thing with Gomez instead of buying him out.

Wade Redden is still playing for the Connecticut Whale in the AHL.He had 4 G and 16 A through 49 games. His +/- was -8. The team is currently in the second round of the playoffs. He had one assist in the first round (a best of 5 that was settled in 3 games).

He was never good enough to deserve this contract in the first place…he was never a goal scorer but they expected him to be…he played with excellent play makers and fed them goals so he racked up assists. On the Habs, he has no chemistry and now you see the real Gomez – a third line player if that. Take away his skilled linemates and you have an average player.

I think until there is a new CBA in place, its impossible to guess what Montreal will do with Gomez. The one thing we know for sure is that he won’t be playing for Montreal next season at a cost of $7.5 million, but with all the unknowns surrounding the new CBA I can’t see them doing anything until its in place.

After all, wouldn’t Montreal look really dumb if they bought him out before the CBA was finished, and there ended up being an amnesty period?

I agree with barber. No smart organization would do this. Send him to europe or the minors and call it a day. I guess the minors would be nicer so a team could pick him up if they need the contract to stay above the cap like the preds almost did this year.

Not sure (and as a Habs fan I hope) that this report is true. For a team as rich as Montreal, it doesn't really make sense to buy him out and deal with the cap hit when they could afford to bury him in the minors like the Rangers did with Wade Redden. Bob McKenzie's twitter feed expands on this in-depth.
