Examining the odds of Niemi being involved in a Nash trade

Kevin Kurz of Sharks Insider recently speculated that the Columbus Blue Jackets might be interested in Antti Niemi, and it’s not hard to see why. Columbus has expressed a desire to mix things up in goal after years of being patient with Steve Mason.

Niemi would bring plenty of playoff experience to Columbus and he comes with a reasonable $3.8 million cap hit through the 2014-15 campaign. So it’s not a stretch to believe that the Blue Jackets would be willing to entertain an offer that involves him.

Kurz pointed out that such a move might also make sense from the Sharks’ perspective. They do have a fair amount of goaltending depth with Thomas Greiss, and prospects Alex Stalock, Tyson Sexsmith, and Harri Sateri. In addition, the Sharks are believed to be interested in Rick Nash.

A straight swap involving those two players seems unlikely, especially given what Columbus reportedly wanted for Nash at the trade deadline, but it’s not out of the question that both players could be involved a larger deal.

The Sharks have demonstrated a willingness to make bold summer moves in the hopes of finally winning a Stanley Cup, so I don’t think anything can be ruled out. A trade involving those two players does make a certain amount of sense, but obviously all this just speculation and it will be a while before we find out if this theory has weight.

I think I’d want somebody who was a little more elite than Niemi. Could see it if Couture were also part of the deal…but doubt that will happen. Could see PHI making a deal involving JVR & Bob.

No thanks, not a big fan of Nash. Plus, the team needs Dmen before another forward (who doesn’t play a lick of defense I might add).

Bobrovsky is not as “elite” as Niemi. Have you seen him play this season? It’s been a bit of a train wreck.

Couture is better then Nash straight up at this point. Griess sucks as a goalie. But I would trade Niemi, because of Alex Stalock. And then get a real NHL backup and I would be happy in goal.

But as long as Doug Wilson and Todd McLellan remain this team will win a stanley cup.

It’s really a shame that fans have to suffer through bad coaching and bad trades, because our ownership like the Maple Leafs is clueless.

I don’t know about this. The Sharks would be wise to keep Niemi if they’re serious about contending. A trade involving Thornton/Marleau makes more sense given where the Sharks are at, although those guys probably aren’t what CBJ will be in the market for. I don’t see Nash to SJ happening.

Stalock is the next soon to be great goalie. Niemi has always been overrated. Ship him, Marleau, Mclellan, and Wilson out and you have a very successful offseason even if it’s for a Gatorade towel and water bottle set.

in a similar and equally relevant story, i’m examining the odds of myself being involved in a nash trade.
