Jackets GM Scott Howson: “We need a different look in goal”

If you’ve found yourself underwhelmed with how goalie Steve Mason played in Columbus the past few seasons, you’ll be happy to know you’re not alone.

Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson tells Aaron Portzline of The Columbus Dispatch sitting tight on the team’s goaltending situation over the summer is one thing he is not about to do.

“We need a different look in goal,” Howson said. “We need better play from that position. I told Steve in our exit interviews (earlier this month) that we’re going to have a different look at that position next year, but that right now, nobody can predict what form that’s going to take.”

Welcome to the summer goaltending sweepstakes, Columbus!

Fortunately for Howson, there are names out there to pursue via trade. One of either Roberto Luongo or Cory Schneider, perhaps Kings backup youngster Jonathan Bernier, or maybe Boston’s Tim Thomas. Columbus will be in the hunt along with Tampa Bay and perhaps Chicago as well.

While you could argue about the grass being greener on the other side when looking to make a change in goal, the Blue Jackets can’t possibly get less consistent work than they’ve gotten from Mason. With Rick Nash as a potential player to dangle in a deal, the Jackets changes could be massive this summer.

One can only hope we don’t get any worse in goal. Honestly if I could have my choice I’d prefer Schneider or Rask

Wait, wait, wait, let him play a full season with pads that fit him first, then see what happens.

Sorry to burst your bubble but schneider and rask will be starting in their current cities next season

And it’s highly unlikely Columbus will be on Luongo’s list of destinations if he does waive his no-trade.

You never know. I could see Lou enjoying not having a camera around for a few hundred miles

Yea why would BOS or VAN trade their futures away? CBJ will have to draft a goal if they don’t have one (some) in the system already. I’d look @ M. Subban. You aren’t going to be able to get a goal via free agency. Not exactly a desired landing spot for hockey players.

“We need a different look in goal,” Howson said. “We need better play from that position.”

Funny, substitute the word goal for front office and I could say the same exact thing about Howson. And Priest. And McConnell. Mason is a problem, but he’s far from the only one. And let’s not forget who decided to go through LAST offseason without trying to upgrade the goalie position. Nah, we went and got Jeff Carter instead. Brilliant.

I know what he said is the truth, but man this guy likes throwing players under the bus.

Burke’ll take Mason. Burke knows good goaltending when he see’s it. ;)
