Discuss: Flyers take Game 1 over Devils with 4-3 overtime win

Apr 29, 2012, 6:23 PM EDT

Danny Briere AP

It was familiar territory for the New Jersey Devils going to overtime for the third straight game, but this time it wouldn’t turn out well as Danny Briere scored his second goal of the game to give the Flyers a 4-3 win in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

The Devils won the final two games of their first round series against Florida in overtime but couldn’t hold back the Flyers this time around. Brodeur made 32 saves in the loss while Ilya Bryzgalov made 23 saves while playing uninspiring in goal to get the win.

Some thoughts to take with you into the chat:

- Danny Briere stays red hot when it comes to the playoffs. His point totals as a Flyer are staggering.

- James van Riemsdyk seemed to be all over the ice for Philly. Parking in front of Martin Brodeur on the game-winner especially.

- Funny that Petr Sykora wasn’t good enough to play for the Minnesota Wild but is pumping in goals for the Devils.

- What health percentage is Ilya Kovalchuk playing at? 60-percent? 70-percent?

- It might be time to officially worry about Ilya Bryzgalov. Two soft goals including the one that sent it to overtime.

Good win for Flyers…Once again goalie lets in 2 iffy goals but we still win. Flyers in 6 but need a goalie to beat Rangers.

    • icelovinbrotha215 - Apr 29, 2012 at 6:29 PM

Bryz made several big saves throughout the game but yes you are right, some iffy goals. The Rangers weren’t all that impressive so it’s not a given that either the Flyers or the Rangers will advance. They are one step closer though…

    • jblah - Apr 29, 2012 at 8:25 PM

bryz is too inconsistent. however, he did have some excellent saves. hopefully he can shore up those weak points as the series goes along.

      • bigdong28 - Apr 30, 2012 at 9:08 AM

exactly…Bryz really kept the flyers in the game while they were shaking the rust off for the first 20 or so minutes..it could have easily been 3-0 or worse after the first. That breakaway goal was a soft one but it all started with a bad turnover and as much as you’d like to see Bryz make that save, you can’t expect to not pay when you make a turnover like that and cant get back to pressure the puck carrier.

5 down. 11 more ‘knock knocks’ to go…let ‘em in!

    • obamablowz - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:36 PM

as a flyer fan….knock knocks are gay!

      • icelovinbrotha215 - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:42 PM

As a Flyers fan, why should you care haha? They won. One knock knock, eh I mean, step closer haha. Lighten up my friend. Be happy our team is up 1-0.

      • obamablowz - Apr 29, 2012 at 8:28 PM

I work in a cop and hate rap!!!!!!!!!!!! 11 more wins!!!

      • icelovinbrotha215 - Apr 29, 2012 at 8:42 PM

Haha first thing, hate is a strong word. Second, why do you care ha? Wins. Knock knocks. Cellys. Whatever ya wanna call it ha.

      • somekat - Apr 29, 2012 at 9:31 PM

  3. GenoPringles - Apr 29, 2012 at 6:28 PM

Was the slinky invented before or after 1975?

    • icelovinbrotha215 - Apr 29, 2012 at 6:30 PM

My man haha. How ya doing?

    • lasallehockey81 - Apr 29, 2012 at 6:31 PM

Before… 30 years before. 1945. Good to see you’re trying to educate yourself in the free time you have without your team in the playoffs.

    • tcclark - Apr 29, 2012 at 6:35 PM

you were born this millennium weren’t you?

    • dsd3 - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:42 PM

1975 … the same number as Marc-Andre Fleury’s GAA! What a strange coincidence!

    • flyersgoalscoredby88 - Apr 29, 2012 at 9:50 PM

1975…the first time the pens went bankrupt. The IRS padlocked their facility. Why would a pens fan want to continually bring that year up?

  4. johart52 - Apr 29, 2012 at 6:32 PM

Danny Briere is Mr. Clutch in the playoffs. Go Flyers! Flyers in 5.

  5. spiffy53 - Apr 29, 2012 at 6:35 PM

come on NBC, you got to put HD cameras behind the nets. it looked silly to go from 2012 to 2002 and then back again. are you that cheap?

  6. hockeycoach416 - Apr 29, 2012 at 6:37 PM

Bryz kept them in it in first and last 2 goals were a little bit on bad def coverage. He needs to be better but is also an easy target!

  7. tcclark - Apr 29, 2012 at 6:37 PM

Danny Briere is easily the Conn Smythe Winner if Claude Giroux didn’t exist

  8. pkswally024 - Apr 29, 2012 at 6:38 PM

Hahaha ^ I was saying that all game.

  9. sgtr0c - Apr 29, 2012 at 6:41 PM

It might be time to worry about Bryz? The third period, Flyer’s hockey started to be played. The rust is oiled.

    • icelovinbrotha215 - Apr 29, 2012 at 6:50 PM

Why? Did you watch the first period? He was the only reason the Flyers were ONLY down 1-0. Let’s be objective here. Both goalies gave up some iffy goals. Bryz hasn’t played in a week. That’s 7 whole days. That’s forever in playoff hockey time. The Boys are up 1-0 and the team as a whole can improve.

      • mercyflush - Apr 29, 2012 at 9:30 PM

the game tying goal by the devils in the 3rd period was on a breakaway. bryz could have saved it yes, but how is a breakaway goal an “iffy” goal?

and did anyone see the saves he made in OT? i was sure the Devils were gonna score in that one sequence.

Bryz wasn’t great today but he wasn’t terrible. He was the only Flyer that came to play in the first period. I’m not sure if he’ll lead them to the cup, but I’m no more or less worried about him after today’s game.

      • icelovinbrotha215 - Apr 29, 2012 at 10:29 PM

I agree with you. I’m not trying to bash Bryz. I like him. He played well enough to give his teammates a chance to win. That’s all us fans can ask for. People are quick to bash him every time he gets scored on. They don’t want to look at the D or the forwards or the situation as a whole. Like I said, and as you are doing right now, we need to be objective. It helps for good hockey talk. Not just people saying things to get a response.

  10. genopringlesandbobhpinemolestboys - Apr 29, 2012 at 6:58 PM

    Wow….

After that comeback I bet Geno has the same look on his face like right after he rapes his neighbor’s cat…..

    • icelovinbrotha215 - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:14 PM

Out of all the words you could use…

    • flyersgoalscoredby88 - Apr 29, 2012 at 9:52 PM

Dude…your user name is absurd. Have some class.

    • emoser - Apr 29, 2012 at 10:17 PM

Dude, geno and bob are trolls. If you’re getting worked up enough about them to make a username then they’re getting the better of you.

  11. jucam1 - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:22 PM

What a great win by the Pens…. Oh wait!.. The Flyers destroyed them and SydGina, hope your enjoying watching the Flyers Geno…. Mr. Giroux owns ur sad little team so go troll somewhere else… Big win today, the rust from having easily walked all over SydGina and his girls showed in the first period, but the Flyers came up big when it counted….

    • dsd3 - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:28 PM

I’m a Flyers fan, but seriously, shut up. Nobody wants to talk about the Pens anymore, nor hear your dumb nicknames.

  12. dsd3 - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:26 PM

Yes, a couple of iffy goals in periods two and three, but Bryz is the only reason they were in the game. His first period was unbelievable. He made some clutch saves on many high quality scoring chances. If you’re going to point out those softies, I think you also have to consider the fact that NJ would’ve put the Flyers away in the first period if not for him.

He does need to be better though.

  13. hartnellhasherpes - Apr 29, 2012 at 8:20 PM

remember how the refs gave the filthy flyers game 1 against the pens with that blatent offsides. goal by that french looking queer briere. yea typical filthy b.s. keep your hopes up all you filthy fans your amatuer team will fail like usual.

    • lasallehockey81 - Apr 29, 2012 at 8:38 PM

I remember that.. That was awesome. Offsides by at least a foot! I gotta be honest.. It felt great to be on the good side of a terrible call. I see you haven’t gotten over it. Oh well.. I hope it stings for awhile as punishment for that dumb name you gave yourself.

    • flyersgoalscoredby88 - Apr 29, 2012 at 9:54 PM

You do realize Crosby and Lemieux are French Canadian, right?

    • wicky888 - Apr 30, 2012 at 7:59 AM

If you are any older than 12 I would be totally astonished

  14. obamablowz - Apr 29, 2012 at 9:18 PM

It’s so funny….why is it on the baseball site Phillies fans never bring up other teams that haven’t won World Series?

  15. biffnasty - Apr 29, 2012 at 9:28 PM

Briere looks like such a pedera$$ with his stash!!! Devils played like trash, lucky to even have gotten to overtime

  16. dannythebisforbeast - Apr 29, 2012 at 9:50 PM

If JVR continues to crash like he has. Devils are cooked and their fans can go back to ..oh wait there aren’t any

  17. dawglb - Apr 29, 2012 at 10:24 PM

@hartnesshas……, Danny Briere’s goal in game 1 vs Pittsburgh, the one you claim gave the series to Philly,…. That is a sad excuse for The Pens (by you). The first goal of a seven game series costing them the series…. Pathetic!

  18. libuchamach - Apr 30, 2012 at 12:46 AM

I can see Brodeur’s argument but whether it was or wasn’t, it wasn’t gonna get called. If it did the Flyers were soon going to score anyways. It was all Philly that OT. Devils need to play some better D and for the love of god be MORE CONSISTENT!

  19. blomfeld - Apr 30, 2012 at 1:25 AM

On behalf of all LA Kings fans, we say “congrats” to the Flyers … nonetheless, this does nothing to take away from the fact that “yours” is a criminal organization … and if God has any hand in this, then it will be “you” people who we face and defeat for the Stanley Cup come June !

  20. eagleschic - Apr 30, 2012 at 5:01 PM

Ok, I’m I the only one who flipped out when the NBC announcer said Sykora’s goal was a “goal scorer’s goal” and called it a “pretty goal”? Pretty much made it sound like the shot was unstoppable…LOL. What the hell were they watching? Awful goal!
