Brodeur says he was interfered with on game-winning goal

Apr 29, 2012, 7:10 PM EDT

Danny Briere‘s big shot in overtime gave the Philadelphia Flyers a 4-3 overtime win over the Devils, but if you asked Martin Brodeur about it, he’d give you a different story.

Dan Gelston of the Associated Press reports Brodeur believes he was interfered with on Briere’s shot by James van Riemsdyk. Brodeur says van Riemsdyk pushed his stick out of the way allowing Briere’s shot to find its way into the back of the net and giving the Flyers a 1-0 series lead.

Briere’s game-winner came just moments after having a goal disallowed for kicking it past Brodeur. Don’t think Brodeur didn’t have that in mind while sounding off  as Jesse Spector of The Sporting News gets the real dirt from Brodeur.

“Especially after disallowing a kick-in goal, they wouldn’t do it twice in Philly, that’s for sure.”

Brodeur wasn’t the only one to feel that way as CBSSports’ Brian Stubits reports coach Peter DeBoer said it looked like van Riemsdyk got in Brodeur’s way.

Sour grapes, a legitimate gripe, or just politicking for a call in a future game? Check out the game-winning goal and see for yourself.

    Haha. Very gracious in defeat.

  2. tfoz5150 - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:16 PM

Retribution for the stick to the back of the head earlier to JVR.

    • maalea - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:22 PM

Marty got at least 3 shots in and still no call.

If we got the home ice call in OT, he got the future HOFer call on JVR.

  3. fruitsareedible - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:17 PM

Did Marty have a comment about the no call after he was smashing the back of JVR’s head with his goalie stick?

  4. billsin20xx - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:19 PM

Overhead view def showed interference, but no way were they going to call it.

  5. bloggersarenotjournalists - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:23 PM

    politicking

  6. riles1008 - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:26 PM

    Def interference.

  7. transam7816 - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:28 PM

It is interference. Not that hard to make it out

  8. psudu - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:29 PM

Waaa waaaa…too much time playing internationally with a young Crosby

  9. gmc173 - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:34 PM

Can someone please post the overhead view? I saw multiple angles from NHL.com and didnt look like interfernce

  10. SDR - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:39 PM

This is classic Brodeur. He’s ABSOLUTELY campaigning for game 2. His own men took him out SEVERAL times during the game & his frustration was beginning to mount (witness the HACK job he did to the back of JVR’s head). The book on Marty is to get in his grill & irritate him & that will take him off his game.

As far as the game-winner goes, yeah there was some contact. But it was slight & Brodeur had plenty of space to maneuver. He’s just whining b/c he knows that the refs will even it up in Game 2.

Nevertheless, it won’t make up for the fact that the Flyers roll 4 lines deep & the Devils simply do not have the offensive firepower to last 7 games with the Flyers.

    Whine away Marty.

  11. mclovinhockey - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:39 PM

It was the right call, he skated in front of him… Marty slashed JVR in the head. JVR skates in front of him and it causes a goal so Marty complains?

  12. skippyx - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:41 PM

JVR is clearly in the white space outside the crease. Brodeur shoves his way out and they bump slightly. It was a legit screen. Marty has no right to the ice and he moves out to initiate contact.

  13. melonheadsdaddy - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:48 PM

I want to look at this with no bias…but I can’t. HAHAHAHA JVR has concussion problems and you smash him in the head like that?? I’m glad they won it how they did…otherwise I thought it was a clean game. If I wanted to hear the officials effed up I’d of asked John tortorella…

  14. sippindasyzurp - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:50 PM

No big deal.. Devils win it in 6

    • bowens3181 - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:53 PM

      LOL!

    • lasallehockey81 - Apr 29, 2012 at 8:09 PM

This is a game that was asking the Devils to take control and they couldn’t when the Flyers came out flat in the 1st. Next two periods were pretty much owned by Philly except for some soft goals… You had an opportunity to steal a game. No dice. That prediction doesn’t look too good.

  15. disp350 - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:54 PM

Get the man some cheese for that wine! He was outside the crease…..

  16. joebuckiscreepy - Apr 29, 2012 at 7:59 PM

This obviously him just whining to get calls the next game….or he is a just a sore loser. I just watched 5 different angles and there is NO way that is goalie interference.

  17. dawglb - Apr 29, 2012 at 8:04 PM

Marty, if you are reading this in your hotel,……you are a tool for bashing JvR in the back of the head, and then complaining about interference …..

  18. lasallehockey81 - Apr 29, 2012 at 8:11 PM

If the game 7 OT winner by Ward against Boston wasn’t interference… This couldn’t be either.

  19. wheresdapuck - Apr 29, 2012 at 8:19 PM

This is NHL problem! The NHL refs call goalie interface extremely inconsistently. I have seen some goalies barely touched and the ref will call it; I have seen others smacked into and the it was not called. Broduer has a good excuse.

Conversely, I saw Tim Thomas wack a Cap with a stick and push another out of the way – no penalty. I saw Holtby push somebody and wham – 2 minutes for cross-checking.

I think the NHL is going to have to enfore that when the goalie is in his own paint – an offensive player cannot make contact with him – regardless of where the puck is. This will actually make the game more interesting!

PARISE is gone this summer….. have fun being back in the lottery next year NJ

  21. hartnellhasherpes - Apr 29, 2012 at 8:25 PM

these flyer jokes are getting away with murder. the nhl is trying to hand these pole smokers the cup and there such natural born losers they will end up screwing up the already paved road.

  22. tarotsujimoto74 - Apr 29, 2012 at 8:27 PM

JVR makes contact with Marty’s stick, but JVR is outside of the crease the entire time and was just getting in front of Brodeur, there is nothing wrong with that play. Perhaps, Marty should keep his stick closer to his body next time.

  23. phillyphever - Apr 29, 2012 at 8:29 PM

    Marty: shut up.

  24. jssgriffi - Apr 29, 2012 at 8:30 PM

First the penguins now we gotta deal with the crybaby devils?!?!?!? Don’t worry “Marty” you’ll be at home soon enough to watch the rest of the playoffs. Knock! Knock!

  25. obamablowz - Apr 29, 2012 at 8:36 PM

    Obamablowz says “shut up Marty”

  26. stakex - Apr 29, 2012 at 8:45 PM

Was there contact on the play? Yes, it was clearly visible in the overhead view. However not all contact is interference, and thats the case on this goal. Brodeur is actually the one who makes contact as hes leaving the top of the crease. A good non-call by the refs.

    • emoser - Apr 29, 2012 at 10:11 PM

Agreed. And I don’t hear Brodeur saying anything about him getting away with guillotining Van Riemsdyk with his goalie stick earlier in the game.

    • jpelle82 - Apr 30, 2012 at 10:27 AM

it was pretty clear jvr made contact but you cant tell if brodeur was moving to his left anyway to try to look around him to see the shot. its was just convenient the shot came to his right as he was being “pushed” to his left. good no call, especially in ot in the playoffs. the fall-out is a lot less dramatic with a no-call than it would have been if this was disallowed. you cant hope the refs decide a game in ot like that.

  27. eggserino - Apr 29, 2012 at 8:46 PM

Sounds like he was watching the Blues game and applying it to himself. Brown totally ran Elliott to get him off the post…

  28. buffalomafia - Apr 29, 2012 at 8:51 PM

Who is playing goal for Devils Cynthia Crosby?

Quit crying you lost! Go Philly!

  29. yuuuup - Apr 29, 2012 at 9:15 PM

    Salt Bag

  30. dawglb - Apr 29, 2012 at 9:16 PM

Marty, you got screened. Please stop whining. You are a HOFer. This is no way to end a career….. Don’t embarrass yourself with complaining. Mediocre play is fine, but whining,……not good.

  31. TheWizard - Apr 29, 2012 at 9:20 PM

Considering the behavior he got away with earlier thumping that Flyer in the back of the head while he was laying in the crease, he probably ought to just let it go.

He might be seeing the writing on the wall for this series.

  32. mancave001 - Apr 29, 2012 at 10:26 PM

Contact but no interference, especially after MB raped JVR by holding him down earlier. What a Butt Clown.

  33. kvanhorn87 - Apr 29, 2012 at 11:02 PM

Didn’t PHT have an article where Brodeur says he is ready for the bodies at the net? Then he cries?

  34. truehockeyfan - Apr 30, 2012 at 12:36 AM

@hartnellhasherpes…..I’m getting sick and tired of your ignorant, nonsensical, childlike comments and that goes for your nickname as well. My guess you don’t even play and if you do I’d love to play against because I’d beat the ever loving s*** out of you. Go find some one else to bother like your MOTHER!

  35. hartnellhasherpes - Apr 30, 2012 at 6:10 AM

keep on cheating filthy, everyone in the entire nhl world knows that’s how you win games. you should be banned from the league

    • eaglesfan723 - Apr 30, 2012 at 6:44 AM

      @hartnellhasherpes
Rule #1: You’re an idiot. Take your trolling ass out of here and go watch your team play golf or something. You are either A. A Penguins fan. B. A Devils fan. Which both fan bases are bandwagon fans and disappear when then they are out of contention. Get a life you sourpuss.

      • govtminion - Apr 30, 2012 at 10:59 AM

The answer is ‘A’. It’s that same “Soup can” jackoff who had all the juvenile-named Penguins fan names on here. Since his team is out, it’s time to keep the show going by ripping on the Flyers.

    • g28iscrosbypimp - Apr 30, 2012 at 7:35 AM

Really. Grow some ball hair kid!

  36. dawglb - Apr 30, 2012 at 7:10 AM

This hartnellhasherpes makes our poster (bob…) seem like an educated, thoughtful, knowledgeable hockey fan.

  37. g28iscrosbypimp - Apr 30, 2012 at 7:33 AM

Flyers looked like poop in the 1st and were par with the Devils. Marty is going to get shelled this series, If Devils win a game it will be because Flyers do not want a week lay off to start Rangers series!!! LA- Philly..
    All the Carter sluts awaken!

  38. bigdong28 - Apr 30, 2012 at 9:26 AM

I’ve been fortunate enough to have met brodeur when my uncle sold him a mercedes back in 2006,\; he is the most down to earth simple guy…he’s the definition of class. After seeing this play from all angles I cannot believe he’s really claiming JVR interfered with him…He clearly came out to the top of his crease where JVR was providing a screen. Who contacted who? brodeur made the contact.

  39. jkorkiner - Apr 30, 2012 at 11:06 AM

From the Devils beat writer … http://twitter.com/#!/TGfireandice

Brodeur on winner: “Definitely van Riemsdyk pushed my stick over when he came across. He didn’t do it on purpose…”
Brodeur: “I think he’s just going in front of the net. I’ve got my position there, but it prevented me from making the save ..”
Brodeur cont: “..Especially after disallowing one kicking goal, they wouldn’t do that twice in Philly, that’s for sure.”
Brodeur: ““The referees have a hard job. They see it live.”

So lets see here … Brodeur himself said it wasn’t on purpose and it was what it was. Why is this even a story?

  40. chumthumper - Apr 30, 2012 at 2:38 PM

Goalies are the quarterbacks of the NHL. They should wear tutus.
