Shero calls 11-12 his “most frustrating and disappointing season”

Apr 26, 2012, 7:45 PM EDT

Sidney Crosby

If there’s a morale to the first round, it’s that there’s no such thing as a team of destiny in the post-lockout NHL. The Pittsburgh Penguins were able to stay competitive all season despite some significant injuries — the most notable of which was of course Sidney Crosby’s concussion. The idea was that if they got healthy in time for the playoffs, then they would be the heavy favorites to win the Stanley Cup.

Their top players were all available for the start of the postseason, but of course, the Philadelphia Flyers bested them, much to the dismay of Penguins GM Ray Shero.

“At the end of the year here for me that that is the most frustrating and disappointing that I’ve ever had. I’ve been a (general manager) for six years, an assistant (general manager) for 14 before that. This is the first year I’ve address the team after the season with what my feelings were. That was Monday. Yesterday was a little bit better. This morning, I’m still very displeased with how the season ended for us. Not a good person to be around right now.”

What might make the Penguins’ first round exit even tougher for Shero to swallow is the fact that his team’s golden window of opportunity might be closing. That might seem like a silly notion given how young their core players are, but keeping Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby, Jordan Staal all under contract on top of James Neal, Kris Letang, and Marc-Andrew Fleury might prove to be difficult, especially if the salary cap is reduced as a result of the next CBA.

None of those players are scheduled to be unrestricted free agents this summer, but Crosby and Staal’s contracts will expire in the summer of 2013 while Malkin’s contract will end after the 2013-14 campaign.

“I’m certainly on record, I’d love to keep all three but in a practical world with a salary cap, that remains to be seen,” Shero said.

Ultimately, the issue won’t even be whether or not the Penguins can keep them. It’s whether or not they should. Holding on to that much star talent will rob them of potential cap space that could be otherwise used to build their core.

It’s something that might be in the back of their minds as they gear up for 2012-13.

    “despite some significantly injuries”

Do these articles just not get edited?

      Bloggers are not Journalists
Of course not, it’s a blog

    • sabatimus - Apr 26, 2012 at 9:44 PM

Not to mention the “morale” mis-usage.

“This is definitely my most the season”

    • bobhpine - Apr 26, 2012 at 8:59 PM

      Nice quote

  6. sizzle299 - Apr 26, 2012 at 8:26 PM

Stall and MAF are the only stand-up guys on that list. Get rid Crosby, Malkin, Neal, and Letang- they are losers, frauds, divers and make the whole organization look bad. That was clearly showcased in the ass-kicking they got in the first round by the Flyers. While you are at it- get rid of that dirtbag coach….

    • bobhpine - Apr 26, 2012 at 11:48 PM

Yeah, I’m sure shero will get rid of two league mvp’s a 40 goal scorer and a top defenseman because some troll from filthadelphia thinks they dive…as for being losers three of those players are cup champs, but you wouldnt know anything about that…get some milk from moms fridge and go look for a job

  7. philly4lyfe - Apr 26, 2012 at 8:39 PM

I know they aren’t real journalists. But seriously, the majority of the “articles” they publish are only 3-4 paragraphs. How hard would it be to go back and take 30 seconds to reread it before it gets posted? I would be embarrassed if this was my job and there were constant errors that could be so easily corrected with a quick proofread.

    • bloggersarenotjournalists - Apr 26, 2012 at 10:24 PM

      LOL Yup
Hard to hold a blogger to the level of a high school student when submitting a paper, but here we are…

  8. flyersrdouches - Apr 26, 2012 at 8:43 PM

So funny how the first 5 posts on a Penguins post are Flyers fans! Not even a Pens fan but Jesus!?!? Don’t you toolbags have a second round to be preparing for?!?! You douches are the biggest trolls on the planet. No wonder your Mickey Mouse franchise hasn’t won a cup in like 40 years! Your team karma might keep you from one longer than the Cubbies!!

    • sizzle299 - Apr 26, 2012 at 9:05 PM

This coming from the moron who MADE A SCREEN NAME SPECIFICALLY TO TROLL THE FLYERS ARTICLES!!!! hahahaha yeah dude your one to talk hahaha- you must be kidding….priceless!!

Also, I’m genuinely curious about about I will be preparing for the second round? Not only preparing, but preparing to the point where I don’t have time to read and give you guys $hit for an article about the Penguins organization being embarrassed by the team you so lovingly refer to as micky mouse…

      • obamablowz - Apr 26, 2012 at 9:44 PM

Why do you care what his screen name is? it appears sizzle is the douche

    • bloggersarenotjournalists - Apr 26, 2012 at 10:25 PM

I had the 1st post and Im a Wings fan….

  9. obamablowz - Apr 26, 2012 at 8:52 PM

But as a Flyers fan who’s team is “rebuilding” trading all their “stars” in the off season, trading all their now LATE second round picks to keep Grossman…….”2011-2012 season…..VERY GOOD”

    • odj810 - Apr 27, 2012 at 7:32 AM

Yea I thought they were rebuilding to but there goaltending would be a million times better. Got that one wrong. They have loads of talent. Amazing trades for them this offseason. Even as a bruins fan I like the flyers team. They have a good group. However after giving it thought I can’t root for them due to the fact that I couldn’t take the after affects from the fans of them winning a cup. And i don’t think bryz gets it done.

I created profile because of this post. Which is why I named my profile after you tools. Such a sad little franchise…

    • ml3939 - Apr 27, 2012 at 1:29 AM

Please define “sad little franchise.” I would define a sad franchise as one whose coach has gone on record stating they lost games intentionally so they could draft Mario Lemieux, one who acheived nothing their first 23 years of existence, one who has missed the playoffs 17 times, one who is in the rare category of having a team blow a 3-0 in a 7 game playoff series, one who was so bad that they drafted in the top 2 four consecutive years and one who has bankrupt multiple times and one that has been on the verge of leaving town multiple times.

      • bobhpine - Apr 27, 2012 at 4:28 AM

ha, that 3-0 series lead against the isles happened in 1975…you little fellas sure do love that year…as long as your parents keep letting you use their internet you can continue to enlighten us with more impressive stats about flyers playoff appearances.

      • ml3939 - Apr 27, 2012 at 9:18 AM

Hey, I am bobdouchepine. 1975 is the only thing I can ever say as a response. I have nothing else to say ever. I hope you pray everyday that the Flyers don’t win the Cup this year or you will have nothing to post, ever. I am sure when your boss asks you to take out the trash at work and you forget your one responsibility and he asks why, you state “1975.” When the tranie-prostitute asks you what you will pay for a handy, “1975.”

  11. bobhpine - Apr 26, 2012 at 10:36 PM

People from Philadelphia are just angry and sad in general…they actually get more pleasure out of being negative about other teams than they would being happy for their own teams success…look where it is…it’s in the butthole of Pennsylvania AND new jersey. No wonder

    • ml3939 - Apr 27, 2012 at 1:22 AM

The first 4 posts were clearly Flyers fans trolling this story. It is pretty annoying when anyone’s fans do this. This is in my eyes is the best rivalry in sports right now. I love talking trash about it and debating it. It helps that right now the Flyers have a current advantage in this series and a style that really is suited to play offense first hockey based on their scoring depth. That being said (and really just to address the rivalry in general, not you), you are one of the biggest trolls on this site. You have nothing intelligent to add to any conversation. All you do is critique and criticize the Flyers, Philadelphia and their fans. You don’t even make interesting, thought-provoking or smart statements about your own team. You are a renowned troll in these parts. Be proud.

  12. flyersrdouches - Apr 27, 2012 at 3:16 AM

I’m actually a Wings fan so you can trash Pittsburg all you want. Doesn’t really affect me much. But I respect their franchise and their fan base. Yours, I don’t.

    • phillyboy20 - Apr 27, 2012 at 7:01 AM

so you respect a team that has gone bankrupt and almost skipped town multiple times more than a team that has the 2nd highest winning % all time in the NHL and 8th in all of the big 4 professional sports?….I don’t care if you like the pens more than the flyers that’s fine, but if your talking about which franchise you’re going to respect more you have to pick the team that consistently sells out games and puts outs a playoff caliber team almost every year for the past 45 years

    • ml3939 - Apr 27, 2012 at 9:26 AM

You still have not addressed your issue with the Flyers franchise. What is there not to respect? They are an extremely successful franchise. They have a winning record against every team in the league sans Montreal and Boston. And the way Montreal is set up, that could change in the next 5 years. If you are so small-minded to judge a franchise based on message board trolls, that’s on you. Prior to 1996, the Wings went 42 years between cups. They also missed the playoffs 19 times in that span. How Mickey Mouse is that?

  13. bobhpine - Apr 27, 2012 at 8:15 AM

You have to dude…you just have to…some troll from filthy watching strange pornography in his room and demanding your hockey opinions be the same as his says so

  14. joewilliesshnoz - Apr 27, 2012 at 11:49 AM

Philthadelphia Scumbags and their vomit covered fans are at it again . . .
