The Boston Bruins released the following statement condemning the racist tweets that followed Joel Ward’s overtime goal last night at TD Garden:

“The Bruins are very disappointed by the racist comments that were made following the game last night. These classless, ignorant views are in no way a reflection of anyone associated with the Bruins organization.”

Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds also addressed the tweets.

“It’s the Internet. They can say whatever they want, and they don’t have to show their faces,” said Simmonds, as per Philly.com. “It’s disgusting. Things like that have happened to me before. It’s not something you want to happen, but it’s sad in this day and age that it continues to happen.”

He added: “It is what it is. People can be as gutless as they want. They don’t have to show up. They just throw a comment out on the Internet and it’s getting kind of ridiculous.”
