Crosby on not playing for Canada: “Typically, I’d be there in a second”

Representing your country must be a great honor, but it’s kind of tough to beat up on any player who decides to rest instead of playing in the World Hockey Championships.

That’s especially true for Sidney Crosby, who a) dealt with a brutal year and a half because of concussion issues and b) scored one of the most memorable goals in the history of Canada’s involvement in international competition. Still, there are some who question his decision, so Crosby addressed those reactions in this Canadian Press story.

“Typically, I’d be there in a second, but this isn’t a normal situation and this isn’t me trying to hide away from the world championships,” Crosby said. “I love playing for Team Canada. Anyone who is questioning that right now obviously doesn’t know me or aren’t thinking right.”

Let’s face it: if any national team can shake off the loss of Crosby, it’s Canada. The generic joke is that the country could often suit up three or more elite international teams, so excessive hand-wringing about Sid the Kid’s absence seems a little silly.

I loved watching Crosby get eliminated in the 1st round :)

something about him… he could he the perfect player and probably one of my favorites…but his lil cheapshots he does to get under opponents skin is aggravating!

    • crosberries - Apr 25, 2012 at 7:53 PM

yeah I’ve never seen another player do that before durrrrr

    • florida76 - Apr 25, 2012 at 7:59 PM

Northstars17, I completely understand your envy. After all, the North Stars(like the Blues, Kings, Caps, Canucks, etc.) never won a single Stanley Cup. Even Gretzky was eliminated in the early rounds during his career, happens to everyone. Crosby and the Pens will be back in the Finals again, you can bet on it.

We’ll see if the Flyers can move on and finally win a Cup for the first time since 1975. Flyers Cup total stands at 2, or one shy of Pittsburgh.

But when he scored the winner for Canada in the last Olympics that all we heard about is how great he was. Now Canada doesn’t need him? Which is it?

      • melonheadsdaddy - Apr 25, 2012 at 10:47 PM

Haha…still bitter are we? Credit where credit is due bro…you lost. Philly won…and won handily. Not because of anything less than the fact THEY WERE THE BETTER TEAM….

      • hockeyfan763 - Apr 26, 2012 at 9:31 AM

Crosby has a tremendous amount of ability. Without a doubt an elite player. He doesn’t need to be a cheapshot whiner. Thats the frustrating thing about him. He should just let his talent do the talking, instead he plays the game of a lesser talented player. I am not a Penguin fan but always loved to watch Mario play. Can’t say the same for El sid.

    • tonyromoisterrible - Apr 25, 2012 at 8:35 PM

Crosby has become what Matt Cooke left behind. Crosby is just an average player now, and the NHL, the sh*ttsburgh pens, and Crosby all realize this. I hope he gets hit in the head hard in the off-season.

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Apr 25, 2012 at 8:40 PM

Crosby is an average player? Talk about being delusional.

      • killerpgh - Apr 25, 2012 at 8:43 PM

1.6 points per game last season says you are wrong. But I’m sure you knew you were an idiot when you posted that.

      • melonheadsdaddy - Apr 25, 2012 at 10:49 PM

Last season was last season…or in Crosbys case, 2 seasons ago…

  2. akrizzy25 - Apr 25, 2012 at 7:54 PM

Ya it’s hockey of course it’s aggravating. Like ppl say, they don’t boo anyone. As a pens fan I am elated that he is taking the time to rest and be 100%. Last time
I checked Canada isn’t paying him $8.7 million a year so boo hoo Canada not one pens fan cares about your tears.

    • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Apr 25, 2012 at 8:05 PM

Nobody in Canada is crying. Sid’s usually not available to go anyway but we’ve still been able to send a pretty good team. Not to mention this tourny is of secondary importance.

    • Doesnotmatter - Apr 25, 2012 at 10:51 PM

Did you even read the article? Yeah, Canada sure is in trouble now that Sid has decided he doesn’t want to play. Now, who will replace him? That one is going to be tough. Stamkos, Spezza, Tavares, one or two of the Staals, Bergeron, Toews, Sharp, Richards, Getzlaf, Weiss, Lecavalier, Thornton,……..
      PS. Your hockey knowledge sucks.

    • mercyflush - Apr 26, 2012 at 10:25 AM

akrizzy25: I checked Canada isn’t paying him $8.7 million a year so boo hoo Canada not one pens fan cares about your tears.

just like the next time the pens have a losing season, not one pens fan will be left who cares about the pens.

pittsburgh penguins fans: biggest bandwagon jumpers in all of sports.

Good on you Sid…take care, and get yourself better! The wonderful thing about freedom of choice and association is anyone can make theses decisions free of any obligation real or implied as issued by pencil-neck keyboard hacks in need of surrogates to fulfill unfulfilled fantasies…! Leave the myths of freedom, democracy and patriotism out of sports at any level and those sports will be better for the consideration…

  4. 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Apr 25, 2012 at 8:03 PM

Lots of guys skip this tourny every year. It’s not a big deal.

    • taytay099 - Apr 25, 2012 at 10:54 PM

Yeah, so many unfair comments being made about Crosby for not playing in this. I don’t see this kind of hate for Stamkos after he skipped it.

malkin gave him a concussion with all the elbows he was throwing

  8. biffnasty - Apr 25, 2012 at 9:01 PM

His boyfriend wanted them to vacation in the islands so e passed on the chance to play

  9. vismund11 - Apr 25, 2012 at 9:33 PM

Maybe since he’s healthy again and eliminated we can stop hearing bout him? That’d be great.

  10. mj1818 - Apr 25, 2012 at 10:25 PM

Tonyterrible or whatever your stupid name is.. I guess given the ramifications of his concussion would probably have a slight effect on performance given the extent of the injury and hot long thy held him out (for a reason as well) It would be expected a players performance might suffer. But then again, it didn’t and he was still was able to score 8 points in 6 playoff games is apparently “average”. But you are well versed on concussions and hockey so I guess everyone who read your comment should take your word for it.

  11. thehighcountrybear - Apr 25, 2012 at 10:34 PM

I’m surprised there aren’t more candidates available from perennial also-rans like Calgary, Edmonton and, ahem…Vancouver. Suck it up Vancouver, lawn bowling season’s just around the corner! And, then there’s cricket? Hahahahahahahahahahahaha…let’s all laugh at Vancouver, voted by the UN as the world’s best place to host a riot…

  12. stakex - Apr 25, 2012 at 10:54 PM

Injured again perhaps? Kinda sounds like it…..

  13. rainyday56 - Apr 26, 2012 at 12:49 AM

Y’know, after all that time of inactivity, the lure of a comfy couch, video games and a big bag of primo ganj would be too hard for a kid his age to pass up . . .

  14. wicky888 - Apr 26, 2012 at 6:58 AM

With all his concussion issues I cant blame him. I think he has another one now. He was a beast on a mission in the early games of the Pens-Flyers series. He was invisible in the last game, and barely effective in game 5. I think he has another concussion now and its gonna be kept quiet.

  15. dexterismyhero - Apr 26, 2012 at 9:46 AM

Maybe Cindy will suit up for the gals team in Canaduh?

  16. mj1818 - Apr 26, 2012 at 11:55 PM

Just penguins fans? How many islanders fans go to games? What about Phoenix? They made the playoffs and still had poor attendance? Any team will sell tickets when the team is good on a consistent basis from year to year not just Pittsburgh.
