Cherry on Torres: Almost a poster boy of how not to play the game

Apr 21, 2012, 8:51 PM EDT

As you may recall, Don Cherry didn’t like Raffi Torres’ devastating hit on Marian Hossa. At the time, Cherry went on the record to say that Torres should get a 10-game suspension. As it turns out, Brendan Shanahan decided a far harsher punishment was warranted.

Following the suspension, Cherry lashed out against Torres, saying that “he’s almost a poster boy of how not to play the game.”

Cherry also called Torres a head hunter and said he had Hossa “lined up for 30 feet.” You can watch the full Coach’s Corner segment below:

It seems fair to say that Torres reputation couldn’t be much worse and when he eventually returns to the NHL, he’ll have to work hard if he wants to present himself as a changed player.

I never miss Coach’s Corner. If you you can’t watch Hockey Night in Canada, you can always view Coach’s Corner (and The Hotstove) online on the CBC website. You’ll know your on the right CBC hockey website when you see the awful Blueberry Cheetah Power Surge commercial that precedes Coach’s Corner.

Blueberry Cheetah Power Surge? Is that some Japanese transliteration or did someone just pull a bunch of nouns out of a hat?

Time to take Cherry to the curb. Put him in a nice lawn chair, sure, but take him to the curb (oh, and just throw MacLean in too; he can sit on the ground though). Time to clean house CBC – blame it on the budget cuts if need be.

Cherry’s “analysis” has gone steadily downhill over the last 5 years. He’s now just pretty much a Toronto Maple Leafs commentator now. If I want that I’ll just tune into TSN, thank-you very much.
