You make the call — will Flyers-Pens go over or under 7 total goals?

Apr 20, 2012, 12:55 PM EDT

Flyers Pens

Those who bet on the NHL will know that total goals (aka over/under) are almost always set at 5 or 5.5. Occasionally you’ll see a 6, but that’s as high as it’ll go.

Until tonight in Pittsburgh, where the total for the Penguins-Flyers game has been set at 7.

So in the spirit of gambling with nothing but pride on the line, we’d like to encourage all our fantastic commenters, and even the ones who we’re pretty sure comment from their prison cells, to pick whether the total goes over or under 7.

Reasons it might go over:

—- At least 7 goals have been scored in all four games.

—- You would’ve thought both teams would’ve tightened up defensively after Game 1. And then after Game 2. And then after Game 3. But they didn’t, so why should we expect them to tonight?

—- Claude Giroux may think Ilya Bryzgalov is going to be “great” tonight, but when his reasoning includes “I have a feeling,” we’ll go ahead and put that in the “just trying to be positive” category.

—- The Flyers will be without defensive defenseman Nicklas Grossmann (concussion), who will be replaced by inexperienced Erik Gustafsson.

Reasons it might go under:

—- Marc-Andre Fleury hasn’t allowed a goal in over two periods!

—- Ummm…a low-scoring game is due?

Alright, you make the call. I’m taking the under. Because what the hell, I’m staring at 1-7 in PHT’s first-round predictions, so nobody cares what I think will happen anyway.

    1-7? Good god…

  2. philly4lyfe - Apr 20, 2012 at 1:01 PM

I don’t care how many goals are scored. I just hope the refs let the players decide the outcome of this game. I was waiting for them to start making calls for breathing on people last game.

    • kotteintheslot - Apr 20, 2012 at 3:32 PM

after game 3 and all the suspensions they had to start calling tighter. it happened in every other game for every team so please dont give me the bias. and this is coming from a caps fan who despises the penguins.

  3. govtminion - Apr 20, 2012 at 1:08 PM

I’m saying nine goals in this one between the two for a 5-4 Flyers win.

…and that said, we’ll all be stunned by a 1-0 game. Because in this series it’s everything you DON’T expect to happen, so why the hell not.

  4. ntestarossa - Apr 20, 2012 at 1:11 PM

    Over

  5. michiganhockey11 - Apr 20, 2012 at 1:12 PM

Under 7? Maybe, but goaltending for both teams have sucked more than a siv in this series.

    • HawaiiHockey - Apr 20, 2012 at 2:15 PM

If I were coaching, I would just play 6 attackers from the opening face off and shoot for triple digit goals. Why not? The goalies seem to be dead weight anyway….

      • michiganhockey11 - Apr 20, 2012 at 3:09 PM

That would be awesome. You could always take a cut out of the movies

        *Emilio!

        ahh crap….

  6. cuhoch - Apr 20, 2012 at 1:16 PM

    7 goals total. Pens 4 – Flyers 3

  7. lafavs - Apr 20, 2012 at 1:18 PM

If I’m betting o/u on this one, I’m going over or I’m not betting. Only a fool would put his hard-earned dollars on an “under” in this series.

The other night I saw the o/u was at 6, but you had to pay a little extra to take the over (-120, I think).

  8. jblah - Apr 20, 2012 at 1:21 PM

under. i hope. i think maybe the teams will finally buckle down and play some defense. 3-2 flyers.

    • michiganhockey11 - Apr 20, 2012 at 1:24 PM

I hope to as well. Would love to see Flyers close it out in Pittsburgh.

People who take the under in this game are those that bet on black at roulette after 4 reds come up. Sure, the under could happen, but nothing in this series suggests that either team is taking defensive hockey too seriously. And to the Flyers fan complaining about the officiating in game 4, GET OVER YOURSELVES. Of course it was going to be called tight after the game 3 debacle. And the sad thing is, it was already being called tight before the Pens 7 power plays in a row, AND YOUR TEAM DID NOT ADJUST TO HOW THE GAME WAS BEING CALLED. Be mad at yourselves, not the refs. Now go out and act like the better team, which you have been in 3 out of 4 games so far.

    • mordock57 - Apr 20, 2012 at 5:13 PM

You DO know that the odds on black or red in roulette are EVEN regardless of the previous four spins, right? Nah, didn’t think so. Roulette isn’t hockey, not even close. It’s a horrible analogy.

Hopefully the flyers will be so embarrassed over last games lousy defense that the finally decide to button down the hatches tonight. I’m saying under.

  11. phillyphever - Apr 20, 2012 at 2:02 PM

Please be under. I’m sick and tired of watching video game hockey. I want real hockey played tonight.

    • michiganhockey11 - Apr 20, 2012 at 3:10 PM

You don’t like watching NHL ’94? Whenever Roenick or Fedorov had the puck and shot they scored?

Just don’t pick Hartford. The Whale…..

  12. biffnasty - Apr 20, 2012 at 2:02 PM

Definitely the under. Lol. It due

  13. philly4lyfe - Apr 20, 2012 at 2:18 PM

Reading comprehension is obviously lost on you, but if you are a pens fan, i guess thats to be expected. Where in my post did I say the officials were out to get the flyers? No where. Do you know why? Because i thought there was weak calls on both sides. Like I said, the officials should let the players decide the game. That means the players on both sides. So how about you get over yourself instead, kthx.

    • myopinionisrighterthanyours - Apr 20, 2012 at 2:34 PM

Reading comprehension is lost on me, huh? Well, let’s see, would a Pens fan call you the better team in three out of four games? I think not. Are where did I say you were complaining about the Flyers getting jobbed. You might have taken the implication since I brought up the 7 power plays in a row, but YOU were complaining about the overall officiating, but the officiating was what it had to be, especially after game 3. AND YOUR TEAM WAS THE ONE THAT FAILED TO ADJUST. Sorry, just pointing out facts.

  14. joegoodsports - Apr 20, 2012 at 2:18 PM

Man, I dont even know anymore. Your crazy not to take the over the way its been going but you also feel its time the under is about to hit. The balls rolled on red to many times not to bet black this time around but right when you bet black, it lands on red again. Well see what happens. Go fly guys. Also I think bryz hip injury could come into play tonight. http://www.joegoodsports.wordpress.com

  15. birdzflyinhigh - Apr 20, 2012 at 3:35 PM

this series is like playing Wayne Gretzky 3D hockey, of course its going over 7…in the first period

  16. kotteintheslot - Apr 20, 2012 at 3:40 PM

due factor doesnt apply when both goalies blow and both teams dont feel like playing defense. over for sure.

  17. flyerspride - Apr 20, 2012 at 3:52 PM

I predict over 5-4 flyers in ot jagr with the winner

  18. rj2922 - Apr 20, 2012 at 3:55 PM

Last 2 games the over/under was shot after the 1st period.

  19. flyerguy73 - Apr 20, 2012 at 4:10 PM

My flyers will win tonight 4-2.

  20. micklethepickle - Apr 20, 2012 at 4:36 PM

I’ll take under. PHI got embarrassed in Game 4, and I think the PIT is overdue to embarrass themselves again. 4-2 PHI, with Bryzgalov taking some confidence into round 2.

Because you mentioned being 1-9, went back and read all of the PHT predictions. Wow – looking pretty rough, though I wouldn’t have done any better myself. Definitely have had doubts about the Pens all year, so am not surprised at their collapse, but this has definitely been a surprisingly hard fought 1st round of the playoffs.

    Go CAPS!

  21. quizguy66 - Apr 20, 2012 at 5:30 PM

7 goals for the whole game or just the first period?

    -QG

  22. pens101 - Apr 20, 2012 at 6:16 PM

Over seven do u even watch hockey there was a total of 13 goals. 7 after the first period!!!

  23. tackledummy1505 - Apr 20, 2012 at 6:57 PM

Game will definitely go over 7 goals. My call out is since the Shanahan rulings have been out and since injury has been a factor, why hasnt Malkin been suspended? Grossman suffered a concussion from an up high check to the head by Malkin. Grossman is out for tonight’s game, yet no penalty was called on Malkin and he has not been suspended. Same thing could be said about Shea slamming the Red Wings player’s head into the glass. Are certain players off limits to suspensions? I feel the NHL protects players such as Malkin and it’s crap. 3 years ago Dan Carcillo punched a guy in the head and got a 3 game suspension. Malkin did the same thing in the playoffs that same year. Malkin was awarded no suspension and the Pens won the cup that year. Yup the NHL has their favorites and that’s BS
