Nickelback to play 2012 NHL Awards show

Apr 20, 2012, 11:30 AM EDT

The band everyone seems to hate but somehow sells a billion records (wait, do they still say “sells records”?…whatever) will headline the 2012 NHL Awards show in Las Vegas, the league announced today.

And of course that band would be Nickelback. Or as I like to call them, the Poison of the 21st Century.

The NHL Awards will take place June 20 at the Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas.

Music from Nickelback’s Here and Now album will also be integrated into 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs broadcasts, highlight reels during the conference finals, and on NHL Tonight.

Nickelback has performed at the NHL Awards before, in 2002 when they were held in Toronto and Jose Theodore won the Hart. (Yeah, that actually happened.)

For the full announcement, click here.

In the meantime, remember when Chaka Khan played the 2009 awards show?

That was a super weird choice.

The one flaw with hockey.. No idea how to pick music that is in touch with people..

    • davidpcoelho - Apr 20, 2012 at 12:08 PM

They pick Nickelback yet Weber got no suspension at all….

      • michiganhockey11 - Apr 20, 2012 at 12:28 PM

        Bazinga

    • mattryannolan - Apr 20, 2012 at 12:29 PM

      Should have picked Sum 41!

    • slammincamnewton - Apr 20, 2012 at 1:11 PM

It’s because of Canada. People don’t realize Nickelback is Canadian.

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Apr 20, 2012 at 1:48 PM

No, we don’t like them either.

  2. anotheryx - Apr 20, 2012 at 11:37 AM

I never got the Nickelback hate… yeah, they basically can’t sing and just holler alot, but that would put them above average against what goes on these days.

    • jpelle82 - Apr 20, 2012 at 11:41 AM

      you must be canadian

      • anotheryx - Apr 20, 2012 at 11:42 AM

Somehow Nicki Minaj for superbowl is a better choice? Really?

  3. govtminion - Apr 20, 2012 at 11:37 AM

Oh for the love of… what, Bieber was too busy or something?

    • ballistictrajectory - Apr 20, 2012 at 12:56 PM

He was. His hours spent gazing into his dressing room mirror have been cut back and he needs to bring those minutes back up.

      • barkar942 - Apr 20, 2012 at 2:42 PM

He’s too busy bop..spending time with that Gomez chick!

  4. fruitsareedible - Apr 20, 2012 at 11:42 AM

Hopefully the inevitable petition to have them replaced works this time around.

  5. pensfan29 - Apr 20, 2012 at 11:43 AM

I dont exactly like nickelback but i dont understand why they get so much hate…

  6. mdnjdevil - Apr 20, 2012 at 11:48 AM

If you want canadian get Rush. At least they have a pedigree and influence on other musicians.

People think Nickelback is awful because the music is devoid of real feeling and emotion, has no originality across songs/ablums, etc. – it was created just to pursue the almighty ducket.

    • crazemastercraze - Apr 20, 2012 at 11:54 AM

couldn’t have said it better myself. or take a chance on a good band that hasn’t been heard by a ton of people but has albums and presence, Mastadon maybe? if fallon and conan can get away with it, why not the nhl???

      • shiplore - Apr 20, 2012 at 12:23 PM

They tried that last year, some godawful thing with keyboards and a DJ and some dance routine. I might just be old but I’d never heard of them and jeezum crow it was terrible. Nickelback though is actually a step back.

    • anotheryx - Apr 20, 2012 at 11:56 AM

But that’s pretty much sums all singer/band except maybe Adele and Eminem… I mean, Katy Perry and Riahnna have the same song writer for their hits!

      • wingsdjy - Apr 20, 2012 at 12:22 PM

You mean they don’t write their own hits!?! Blasphemy

    • dipthatchip - Apr 20, 2012 at 2:02 PM

      Bubbles would agree

  7. lsxphotog - Apr 20, 2012 at 11:56 AM

Why…this is worse than Criss Angel…not by much though.

  8. hockinj25 - Apr 20, 2012 at 11:56 AM

People hate on them because everyone else hates on them. Ask them why Nickelback is bad and their response is “Because they do.” If they were that bad they wouldn’t have multiple platinum and gold albums.

    • davebabychreturns - Apr 20, 2012 at 12:04 PM

“If they were that bad they wouldn’t have multiple platinum and gold albums.”

That is some grade A reasoning right there, ironically directly following a sentence criticizing other people’s reasoning.

    • mhazz84 - Apr 20, 2012 at 1:59 PM

      “Why is Nickelback bad?”
      “Because they do.”

      Yup. This guy looooves Nickelback.

  9. vshehane - Apr 20, 2012 at 12:01 PM

I really didn’t realize there was a lot of hate. I just think they are really boring.

    • lostpuppysyndrome - Apr 20, 2012 at 9:09 PM

For those of you who clearly don’t get why Nickelback is so terrible, here are all the reasons you need: http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/arts-and-life/entertainment/music/were-begging-you-mr-bettman-no-nickelback-128518798.html

  10. mgp1219 - Apr 20, 2012 at 12:08 PM

I love hockey & the NHL, but their awards show is low budget and it must have gotten lower.

Hopefully this year no one will say Martin “Saint Lewis”.

  11. babar61 - Apr 20, 2012 at 12:11 PM

Gross….i am embarrassed my country produced them. As a canadian i would like to take this opportunity to apologize to the world for nickleback. There has ro be someone better available…

    • crosberries - Apr 20, 2012 at 12:39 PM

      Haha that’s great

    • habsman - Apr 20, 2012 at 2:33 PM

How would you feel if your country produced Clay Aikens?

      • babar61 - Apr 20, 2012 at 4:39 PM

Bad but I think that’s the first time I have seen or heard the name clay Aiken in 4 or 5 years…..somehow nickleback is pushed so hard. I don’t get it.

  12. sledgehorn - Apr 20, 2012 at 12:12 PM

    Stupid NHL.
They should have Rush play every single year.
They are Canadian, nobody hates them.
    It’s whats best for everyone.

    • kitshky - Apr 20, 2012 at 2:37 PM

Whoa Whoa Whoa … no one hates Rush!?! What decade are you guys living in!?

The true insult of this to me is that there are so many great Canadian bands performing around the Globe having at times massive appeal and success (Album of the year – The Arcade Fire just as an example) … and keep they dragging out this crap like it somehow represents Canada, or in this case hockey fans on either side of the border.

  13. wingsdjy - Apr 20, 2012 at 12:24 PM

Because getting booed at a Detroit Lions halftime wasn’t enough for these guys?

  14. sjsharks66 - Apr 20, 2012 at 12:45 PM

Every hockey player loves nickleback and drake.. Blame them for the horrible choices. Should go with letangs favorite band:Metallica and orpiks favorite band:pearl jam

  15. whlskey - Apr 20, 2012 at 12:55 PM

First the All-Star game, and now this blatant disregard for the public’s hearing and general overall well-being.. Someone needs to have a hearing with Shanahan about potentially losing his or her job.

  16. hairpie - Apr 20, 2012 at 12:59 PM

How are these guys still a working band? Have you EVER heard anyone say “Hey man, put on some Nickleback….”

    Me either.

  17. joetoronto - Apr 20, 2012 at 1:28 PM

Neil Young exposed a while back for being a bunch of pretenders, who don’t even play their own instruments.

    They’re a joke.

  18. mhazz84 - Apr 20, 2012 at 2:06 PM

Best video on youtube is seeing those guys get hit with rocks on stage in Portugal. I would pay for a front row seat if I were allowed to sneak rocks in to do this.

    • hank10 - Apr 20, 2012 at 2:25 PM

Hey, Mr. Nickleback, whatever your name is, if the audience wanted to hear rock and roll, they wouldn’t be throwing rocks now, would they? Love it when folks answer their own questions.
(And if they hate the band so much to throw rocks, why pay money to see them? Unless TarnishedNickel were part of a festival show?)

    • babar61 - Apr 20, 2012 at 4:44 PM

Haha beat me to it. Thank you Portugal!

  19. barkar942 - Apr 20, 2012 at 2:44 PM

Maybe they can get the Rolling Stones. No wait- they would need to build another circular stage like the NFL did so the old coots don’t get lost!

  20. babar61 - Apr 20, 2012 at 4:43 PM

    http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=P7F3O6WYfHQ

    Thank you Portugal!
