Grossmann could miss Game 5, possibly with a concussion

Apr 19, 2012, 4:52 PM EDT

Malkin on Grossmann

The Flyers might be without one of their key defenseman Friday in Pittsburgh. Nicklass Grossman missed practice today with what’s reportedly a concussion.

Grossman was injured in yesterday’s game against the Penguins after being hit with what some are calling an elbow by Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin.

Personally I can’t tell for certain from the video. I’m leaning towards saying it was a shoulder to the head. However, it might’ve still been in violation of Rule 48 that outlaws hits “resulting in contact with an opponent’s head where the head is targeted and the principal point of contact.”

Good thing I’m not Brendan Shanahan.

Regardless of how the injury happened, Philadelphia will miss Grossmann if he’s out. The big blue-liner typically plays around 20 minutes per game in a shutdown role, and after the Flyers surrendered 10 goals yesterday, well, you do the math.

The club is saying Grossman is day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

Pens/Flyers article featuring an injury caused by Malkin.

This is going to blow the f*** up in 3… 2… 1…

As close as they called that game, with all the attention that was on that game, if there was even a real thought, Malkin would have been yanked. Watched the game on FSP and the announcers talked about this hit, how he was slow to get up, and the knee issues that Grossman had from a hit from someone on the Pens from the April 1st game(sorry forget who it was). This time of year, no one is telling you what the real injury is. Not saying that’s what it is, just bringing up another fact.

He was chasing a puck it was a shoulder too pick ur head up and play the puck and that never happens. Tanger has had way worse this yr with no fines. How does Ronaldo not get anything for his actions is more significant lol

I was watching the game and saw the hit and wondered why no one really made any fuss about it (announcers or other players). I thought it was definitely borderline.

First contact was to the shoulder. Not the head. Nice try though.

Who are you directing this to? At least wait until the sh!tstorm starts.

Also the Flyers stated after the game that Grossman was injured on a hit by Tyler Kennedy.

    Again, nice try.

if it was the kennedy hit, which i think it was, kennedy should be suspended. it was a textbook charge and he hit him with his forearm in the head. kennedy came from halfway across the ice and never even attempted to stop skating before he him. then after the ref just watched that he called rinaldo not even 30 seconds later for a good clean hit, which i admit isnt always the case with rinaldo.

I think the Rinaldo story you are looking to comment on is a few down.

Worse news: in addition to Grossmann, Howard Eskin’s reporting Bryz has a hip injury and may be out tomorrow.

    • paulsdamnblog - Apr 19, 2012 at 7:03 PM

Eskin is a self glorifying jack@$$. Take anything that tardo says and think the polar opposite.

      • phillyphever - Apr 19, 2012 at 7:14 PM

Well, he did say Meszaros needed back surgery before the team announced he did need it. I trust him on this than I do Homer and Lavy.

      • phillyphever - Apr 19, 2012 at 7:15 PM

BTW, I take him over Mikey Miss anyday of the week. Mike’s a bigger horse’s a$$ than Eskin, and it’s not even close.

Both guys suck. Eskin always doing Eagles PR and taking out his childhood frustrations on his former callers.

I briefly liked Missanelli but then realized he knows very little about the sports he covers no matter how he spins it. Prime example. He told a caller his pick from the West was St. Louis. I emailed and called him on it. Told him he couldn’t name anyone in that organization beyond Captain Kangaroo. He said, oh the back up when to the all star game a little bit later. Stated nothing else about the team. No idea who T.J. Oshie was. A couple of days later he was playing his name goalies or pitchers game from a city. When he got to Boston, he claimed Tim Thomas replaced Tukka Rask as if Rask was the started all along before the Bruins won the Cup. I called him out on it. He tried to correct himself on the air and stated Thomas replaced Halak. He then said Halak signed a big free agent deal elsewhere but was not sure for which team. He is a complete fraud. I apologize to anyone outside the Philly area who could care less about this post but I just wanted to point out what a turd this guy is.

Face it, 98% of radio talk show guys couldn’t name more than 5 head coaches in the NHL.

  9. bennywisest - Apr 19, 2012 at 7:08 PM

The kennedy hit if it was kennedy can’t find a video happened around that time and looked worse. Checked Grossman into glass with both hands point of contact his head. Grossman came off ice and looked to have a jaw issue. Think that one did it. No call there either.

It’s time for the flyers to retaliate in kind. Target Crosby’s head on every shift. Go after Malkins knees on every shift. Target Latang’s head on every shift.
