Devils’ Game 4 starter: Martin Brodeur

For better or worse, the New Jersey Devils are going with loyalty and nostalgia in net. Despite being pulled about two minutes into the second period during the Devils’ 4-3 loss to the Florida Panthers, Tom Gulitti reports that Martin Brodeur will get the nod instead of Johan Hedberg in Game 4.

Technically speaking, Hedberg received the “L” because he allowed the deciding goal. Still, Brodeur gave up three on 12 shots before being pulled, so many will blame him instead.

(Then again, Patrik Elias also accepted some blame for taking a penalty that eventually resulted in a goal as he tried to track down an icing puck, so there’s plenty to go around.)

Honestly, I think Hedberg probably deserves a shot to roll with the No. 1 job. His numbers have generally been better than Brodeur’s during the last two seasons, and with Zach Parise‘s future up in the air and much-needed money in more playoff games, it might be worth risking the future Hall of Famer’s feelings.

What do you think, though? If you were Peter DeBoer, would you go with Brodeur or Hedberg?

I love Marty but he let in two absolute softies tonight. Then again, there was so much else wrong with this game, I could see why DeBoer feels the need to press the reset button and not make any major changes. From not being able to win a face-off at seemingly any point, to horrible officiating, scapegoating Marty by sitting him down in Game 4 doesn’t make sense when the goalie was but a spoke on the wheel of calamity and misfortune.

Parise’s comment about the team going into the locker room up 3-2 and feeling like they were losing is really telling. At some point, SOMEONE be it the coaching staff, the captain, the 100 million dollar superstar, the steady veteran that’s been here for two cups, or the Hall-of-Fame goaltender need to rally the troops.

I agree 100%. It starts making you realize how important Stevens really was to this team. He would NEVER let this happen. The Devils’ mental approach has to change if they want to win this series.

That’s another win for the Panthers right there!

I agree with mj2sexay (although he or she really needs a new username).

It’s one of those “they’re only the Panthers, we did have a 3-0 lead, we just collapsed” situations where it might be best to just erase the game from the team’s memory and start anew.

    It’s for better.
