Philadelphia Daily News gives Sidney Crosby strange front page treatment

Apr 17, 2012, 11:24 PM EST

Local newspapers have a long history of strange Photoshop treatments, but the Philadelphia Daily News’ Frank Seravalli provides a look at Wednesday’s cover treatment of Sidney Crosby that you need to see to believe:

source:

Yes, that’s Sidney Crosby’s face and skates superimposed on The Cowardly Lion from “The Wizard of Oz.”

When I say “you need to see it to believe it,” I mean it from a personal standpoint. I literally had to ask Broad Street Hockey’s Travis Hughes that this is real. On a night full of scary moments and strange suspensions, this might be the most stunning NHL-related thing you’ll see.

So, uh … what do you think?

  1. ndrick731 - Apr 17, 2012 at 11:31 PM

100% accurate. He is one of the dirtiest players in the league but before now everybody in the media looked the other way. Starts all kinds of crap and then runs and hides. Only one worse is Malkin.

    • pensswag91 - Apr 18, 2012 at 3:01 AM

      Haters gonna hate.

      • melonheadsdaddy - Apr 18, 2012 at 8:56 AM

        homers gonna home(?)

      • mackey331 - Apr 18, 2012 at 10:15 AM

Crosby only fights non fighting Europeans. His only true fights in his career were against Zidlicky and Niskonen, who he easily beat up. Otherwise he stirs the pot and his teamates have to continually defend him or he hides behind NHL linesman and throws sucker punches.

      • mackey331 - Apr 18, 2012 at 10:48 AM

He tried to make it 3 for 3 fighting Kimmo Timmonen, who had never had a fight in his long NHL 15+ year career. Chris Letang had to step in and battle in that one for him.

    • hatman83 - Apr 18, 2012 at 7:00 AM

Sure he has some antics (and so does everyone!), but it is ridiculous to rip the guy as instigating and then running and hiding – especially when he also gets ripped for fighting when he does so!
I don’t see the same comments on Hartnell’s antics leading up to his fight with Adams. Crosby got fed up, and was actually engaging in the fight until Adams (probably wisely) stepped in, but from the looks of it, that wasn’t on Crosby request. Again I wouldn’t call it instigating and then hiding.

      • psujay - Apr 18, 2012 at 8:07 AM

Hartnell’s antics? You mean being held by Crosby, then getting punched in the back of the head by Adams?

      • hatman83 - Apr 18, 2012 at 8:51 AM

I mean grabbing Crosby’s stick and pulling it all the way towards the bench. That was what Crosby reacted to, until Adams interferred. In my opinion, that’s no different from Crosby knocking away the glove, but these one-sided discussions somehow finds Crosby’s antics more shameful…

      • benzoids - Apr 18, 2012 at 11:01 AM

Crosby’s first fight was against Boston’s Andrew Ference. Canadian.

      • jpelle82 - Apr 18, 2012 at 12:15 PM

he also fought mclean, canadian. niskanen is an american btw, ference is canadian, giroux is canadian, ballard – canadian. zidlicky is the only european – check your facts mackey

    • scrapcat17 - Apr 18, 2012 at 8:41 AM

Cindy has lost his protectors. Gonna be a long night.

      • miketoasty - Apr 18, 2012 at 9:25 AM

Not really, didn’t you hear that the Flyers are the cleanest team in the league? I mean they never do anything to stir the pot. Well that’s at least what I got from reading PHT for the last week.

    • jpelle82 - Apr 18, 2012 at 9:26 AM

wtf do you watch? crosby didnt skate away from anything. he engaged with every single opportunity he had (timmonen, vorcek, giroux 2x, hartnell, schenn). name one time he skated away from someone please. malkin is dirty but he doesnt skate away either, he goes after people. you must not watch penguins games. take your blinders off.

  2. orangegesus - Apr 17, 2012 at 11:32 PM

I’d have preferred they’d waited until the series was over to taunt the Pens. With that said, at least I can keep that picture forever. I’m sure it will prove useful again and again in the future.

    • joebuckiscreepy - Apr 18, 2012 at 9:08 AM

I feel the same way. This is Philly. Doing a NY Post photoshop on the cover like that is basically asking for a historic meltdown.

With that being said, this series ends tonight.

      • jpelle82 - Apr 18, 2012 at 9:27 AM

good luck in ny philly fans. how many times did you beat them this year?

  3. dgbk - Apr 17, 2012 at 11:33 PM

i think they are trying hard to sell papers.. if the pens were up 3-0 they would have sid with a crown on his head im sure…

    • hoopshort - Apr 18, 2012 at 12:29 AM

You obviously don’t know Philly newspapers.

  4. philly4lyfe - Apr 17, 2012 at 11:33 PM

    I approve this message.

  5. jaybertx - Apr 17, 2012 at 11:35 PM

They make him look too brave in that picture.

  6. greggoldberg - Apr 17, 2012 at 11:38 PM

Uh…that’s embarrassing and I’m saying that as a Flyers fan. If I wanted to read the New York Post I’d go do that.

    Please just win tomorrow. Please.

  7. dmfc1112 - Apr 17, 2012 at 11:39 PM

That’s funny. I wonder if Bettman will try to fine the Daily News for making fun of his most prized player.
So if they add Bettman to the photo who is he portrayed as? Toto?

    • charliereno - Apr 18, 2012 at 1:38 AM

I’m still laughing at that. Well played. =D

    • rainyday56 - Apr 18, 2012 at 3:37 AM

Wicked witch of the east. Someone drop a house on him!

  8. sjsharks66 - Apr 17, 2012 at 11:41 PM

That’s a joke. Everyone stands up for themselves in hockey. I don’t know why its bad that Crosby does the same thing.

    • HawaiiHockey - Apr 18, 2012 at 3:40 AM

Crosby doesn’t stand up for himself. That’s why its bad. He stirs the pot and then refuses to drop gloves while players around him get in fights from the s*** that he starts.

The answer to your question is right int your question: Everyone stands up for themselves in hockey. But Crosby doesn’t.

      • miketoasty - Apr 18, 2012 at 9:00 AM

He fought with Giroux last game.

      • HawaiiHockey - Apr 18, 2012 at 1:56 PM

He punched Giroux while the guy was still talking and then pulled him to the ice as fast as possible. There was at least two other instances where Crosby was being challenged to go and he sat there running his mouth and looking at the refs

      • joebuckiscreepy - Apr 18, 2012 at 9:10 AM

@ miketoasty: he didn’t start anything until the refs were right there to get in the middle of it.

      • miketoasty - Apr 18, 2012 at 9:29 AM

@joebuckiscreepy http://www.hockeyfights.com/fights/111465 – Go watch it again, Crosby didn’t even start with Giroux until he took him away from Timmonen.

      • jpelle82 - Apr 18, 2012 at 9:31 AM

he has more fights than 90% of the flyers team. look at his fight card, he has one fight where he lost by decision to Ballard, even though he took him down and has won the rest. i dont know what games you casual fans watch but he doesnt skate away from anything, he scrums with the rest of the league

      • HawaiiHockey - Apr 18, 2012 at 2:08 PM

@miketoasty: I watched it again. They square off when a larger brawl breaks out and are essentially both gripping on to each other. The linesman steps in, it looks like its gonna be over, and then Crosby decks Grioux in the chops with an uppercut.

@jpelle82: His card at hockeyfights.com says 6 fights in 5 years including this one with Giroux. For someone who plays agitator, that’s not much. Also, its not enough to just tally the fights. Look at his style of fighting. Its cowardly. He only fights when someone will be around to save him, as we clearly saw in this fight with the ref stepping in PRIOR to his first punch being thrown.

    • melonheadsdaddy - Apr 18, 2012 at 9:09 AM

you call that a fight? uppercutting G when a linesman intervenes? or asking Schenn to drop while being pulled away from a ref?? that was more like indian wrestling. Hcky9- let me apologize if previous comment was not PC and offends you. Feel free to complain to webhost to have me removed from the comment board, so you can feel a slight moral victory before the Flyers sweep you whiny babies out of this series..

  9. philly4lyfe - Apr 17, 2012 at 11:44 PM

Yeah I was thinking the same thing earlier today. For all this “we swept the pens” talk like its a given, we’d better win tmrw or we are going to look a little silly (although I’ll still take looking silly while up 3-1 any day).

  10. icelovinbrotha215 - Apr 17, 2012 at 11:46 PM

Hahaha the media is something else. The Flyers just need to win tomorrow. It was comical to see Crosby just snap. If he is frustrated, the Pens are done.

  11. sgtr0c - Apr 17, 2012 at 11:46 PM

After the way the pens have played, why would this be a shock to you?

  12. bobhpine - Apr 17, 2012 at 11:54 PM

Nice pens logo from 1999… What is this, a student newspaper? Pathetic

    • jerbear314 - Apr 18, 2012 at 12:18 AM

      • lasallehockey81 - Apr 18, 2012 at 1:10 AM

The paper is divided into 2 sections with the news in front and the sports in the back.. They meet in the middle, basically. So, the news starts at 1 and counts up. Since technically the last page of the paper is the front of the sports section, y

      • miketoasty - Apr 18, 2012 at 9:42 AM

Writing a paper from back to front, making Philadelphia looking even more stupid.

      • lasallehockey81 - Apr 18, 2012 at 12:35 PM

        Wow… Good one.

    • lasallehockey81 - Apr 18, 2012 at 1:14 AM

*you start from the last page and go down to the middle… Hence why it goes backwards… Also, dyslexia has nothing to do with numbers… So you’ll need a new punch line to your joke

      • melonheadsdaddy - Apr 18, 2012 at 8:59 AM

its ok. crossberries proved last night that he has no idea what hes talking about. like most people in pittsburgh…

      • crosberries - Apr 18, 2012 at 10:06 AM

Yes dyslexia does have to do with numbers too

      • lasallehockey81 - Apr 18, 2012 at 12:27 PM

Crosberries are you kidding me? It’s a reading and language disorder not a math disorder. The Internet is totally free… You don’t have to be ignorant… It takes 5 minutes to look something up.

      • crosberries - Apr 18, 2012 at 2:37 PM

Problems in math/s can arise from a dyslexic child’s difficulties with sequencing. Getting numbers in the correct order, and being able to reverse that order is a challenge for the student.

Don’t be ignorant you can look up anything on the internet

  13. mojosmagic - Apr 17, 2012 at 11:54 PM

Sid is off to see the wizard while the Flyers are off to the next round.

  14. phillyphan83 - Apr 18, 2012 at 12:18 AM

    Hysterical!! I love it!

  15. jerbear314 - Apr 18, 2012 at 12:21 AM

This sure is one cocky group of fans. And they witnessed first hand a 3-0 lead overcome 2 years ago. Not saying the Pens will win 4 in a row but the way the Flyers are playing they aren’t gonna get far past round 1.

  16. sjsharksfan11 - Apr 18, 2012 at 12:38 AM

That’s awesome. I hope Philly can win it all if the Sharks don’t.

  17. hoopshort - Apr 18, 2012 at 12:39 AM

A little public service announcement, nothing against the four letter network but hockey bloggers post on these (NBC) sites please. Espn isn’t broadcasting the playoffs. Nbc is and espn doesn’t want to help the game of hockey. So encourage bloggers you know to participate on these sites not espn.

  18. barkar942 - Apr 18, 2012 at 1:11 AM

Maybe Malkin can get the late edition as one of the Flying Monkeys!

    • mickeyb21 - Apr 18, 2012 at 8:56 AM

No, Malkin is the tin man. He gets the Hart in the end.

    • melonheadsdaddy - Apr 18, 2012 at 9:11 AM

micky- That was actually the smartest and most clever thing a Pittsburgh fan has said thus far. Credit where credit is due.. Well played sir

  19. capsfan19 - Apr 18, 2012 at 1:25 AM

Oh this is too funny. Maybe beatmen and shananigan will comb his fur out together. what would make this is if malkin was in a minny mouse costume.

  20. steelwarriors55 - Apr 18, 2012 at 1:40 AM

That is just totally stupid! You make fun of one of the top player in the league before a crucial match with your hometown team? Yeah that is brilliant.Hopefully we’ll finish the job tomorrow but I dont think it was necessary to mock him and get into that kind of crap.Just send them in vacation and then you could do your classless stuff.

  21. schuckme - Apr 18, 2012 at 1:43 AM

Ive known frank personally for many years as far back as playing together on the glaciers back in the mite and squirt hockey days.. hes a good guy and this pic is just great i love it u know why? becuz its the truth.. especially when he needs other ppl to fight his battles for him and lets refs act as his body guards..

    • miketoasty - Apr 18, 2012 at 9:44 AM

The dude had a concussion, oh let’s just throw him out there to take a couple lefts to the chin that sounds like a great idea, idiot.

      • chap6869 - Apr 18, 2012 at 10:17 AM

Miketoasty, I would agree with you except he’s been the instigator in the majority of scrums in this round so if he’s afraid of a concussion, stay the hell out of the scrums and don’t start what you can’t finish. He can’t have it both ways( start a fight and then have his teammates or linemen save him) or he just ends up looking like the coward!

  22. lasallehockey81 - Apr 18, 2012 at 1:58 AM

I’m from Philly and the fact that this is in the national spotlight is embarrassing. The Daily News and Flyers fans were all fired up and trashed the Chicago newspaper that photoshopped Pronger in a skirt on their cover, but this idea is somehow any better? It’s such a tired bit and is so lazy it’s ridiculous. I used to read the daily news.. You know when? Before the Internet.

    • comeonnowguys - Apr 18, 2012 at 2:14 AM

      Bingo.

    • benzoids - Apr 18, 2012 at 11:13 AM

The rules do not apply to Philly and it’s fans/papers/teams. A few years back, the Pens took the first two games in Philly. At the conclusion of game 2, the Flyers started a huge fight to change the tempo of the series. I thought that was a good move at the time. Still do. It is hockey. That is how things happen. The only problem that I have is the double standard which has come to surface. The Pens play dirty for game 3, and Flyer fans have the audacity to act like they are holier than thou? Please. You got the best of us this year by a big margin, but try to win with some dignity people.

      • lasallehockey81 - Apr 18, 2012 at 1:01 PM

Starting huge fight and headhunting are two totally different things and it bothers me that you either choose to ignore the difference or are blind to it. At the end of that game 2, how many Flyers were suspended? I’ll save you the time of having to search for the answer because its ZERO. How many Flyers even had a hearing for questionable behavior? Again, ZERO. You want people to win with dignity? Try losing with some. I wonder how your tune would change if the Pens were up 3-0 and at the end of the 3rd game the Flyers went after Crosby’s head with a suspension worthy headhunt after a suspension worthy crosscheck to a throat. I’m sure winning with dignity wouldnt be in the vocabulary.

As far as the paper goes, I agree its a joke. At the same time, nobody in Philly got a vote as to what the cover of the paper would be today so to assume its the voice of the fans is incorrect. There are just as many people on Philly radio today that arent in favor of it as you claim are…

      • benzoids - Apr 18, 2012 at 1:32 PM

Different era of hockey officiating/regulation lasallehockey81…..If that had happened this year, there would have been suspensions. With regards to everything else in your response, you are absolutely right. I’m beyond frustrated with the play of the penguins in this series. Hats off to your team.

      • lasallehockey81 - Apr 18, 2012 at 1:57 PM

I’ll agree with you as far as the different era… but I’ll still maintain starting a big fight is a far different deal than headhunting… I think the Asham crosscheck would still have been a game misconduct but in the 70s or maybe 80’s…you might be right with the suspension, who knows, tough to say.

  23. mj2sexay - Apr 18, 2012 at 1:59 AM

Make sure you slay the dragon before you taunt it.

  24. phlmt69 - Apr 18, 2012 at 2:20 AM

This picture was a bad idea. I am a lifelong Flyer fan and would prefer we celebrate the way this team is playing, enjoy the ride and hope to the hockey gods that this is not our team’s Bartman incident.

  25. mojosmagic - Apr 18, 2012 at 8:40 AM

No he meant Crosby sweeping Voracheks glove away to start the entire brawl.

  26. miketoasty - Apr 18, 2012 at 9:02 AM

Philadelphia Flyers, can’t win with class, can’t lose with class.

    • greenkeeper15 - Apr 18, 2012 at 10:21 AM

Picture has nothing to do with the orginazation

      YOU IDIOT

And you guys are showing soooooooo much class. craw the hell back under your rock

    • lasallehockey81 - Apr 18, 2012 at 1:14 PM

I see by getting three guys suspended in a game 3 loss, the Penguins can’t lose with class either. I don’t know how they’d handle a win since, well, they havent won yet.

  27. lsxphotog - Apr 18, 2012 at 10:23 AM

Only in Philly. I love it. haha

  28. pens5829 - Apr 18, 2012 at 11:36 AM

All I needed was to read the headline and laugh. THAT coming from a team with Scott “He pulled my hair” Hartnell. What a panty waste? All he does is agitate but when it comes time to man-up, either runs or bites people. Get real Cryer fans!

    • melonheadsdaddy - Apr 18, 2012 at 12:10 PM

laugh all you want. Hartnell is the epitome (look it up) of an agitator, hence why you wish he was on your team. Watch the fight again…hes LAUGHING at your boy because he pulled his hair…he has NEVER shyed away from a fight. Unlike sid the kid…you should be thankful adams saved him, otherwise his career might be over. As for Letang…hes a real tough guy huh? He saved crosby (again) from the most classiest guy to ever put on a flyers uniform…who had never gotten into a fight…and proceeded to throw HAYMAKERS at the back of his head? Classy individual. SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH….worked once, but unfortunately….not twice.

    • trigzter - Apr 18, 2012 at 12:36 PM

adams admitted to pulling his hair. gg

    • lasallehockey81 - Apr 18, 2012 at 1:05 PM

Wait, let me get this straight… You’ll get on a guy for telling his teammates a guy pulled his hair like a 5 year old… but you see NOTHING wrong with that guy on your team who admittedly pulls hair to win fights? ahh, ok I see. Good logic.
