Flyers’ Talbot on Crosby: “He’s kind of like me, but with 10 times more skill”

Apr 17, 2012, 2:54 PM EDT

Crosby Talbot

The Flyers-Penguins series has been full of emotion, and no player might be feeling that more than Max Talbot.

The 27-year-old forward signed with Philadelphia this season after spending the first six years of his career in Pittsburgh. He played in two Stanley Cup finals with the Pens, winning once (by scoring the Cup-clinching goal, no less) and cemented himself as one of Pittsburgh’s great celebrity pitchmen.

As such, he’s got close ties to the Pens — especially his good friend, Sidney Crosby. On Tuesday, he was asked what it’s like going up against Crosby and, in typical Talbot fashion, he found a way to make it light.

“Sid is such a great competitor,” Talbot told Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “When it’s not going his way, he tries to do other things.

“He’s kind of like me, but with 10 times more skill.”

Crosby’s antics in Sunday’s affair — he tussled with both Claude Giroux and Scott Hartnell — have become the topic of great discussion. Pundits blasted them, Don Cherry praised them and Talbot…well, Talbot understands where they came from.

“[Crosby’s] going to do everything he can to spark his team or get a win,” he said. “He tried to do that.”

What about the fact that, following Sunday’s game, Crosby said he “doesn’t like” any of the Flyers?

“He’s definitely a great friend,” Talbot explained. “It gets heated in the moment. That’s OK.”

To be fair, reporters might want to start asking Crosby for his thoughts on Talbot. The Flyers winger has absolutely torched the Penguins’ special teams through three games, notching 3G-1A-4PTS with a power-play goal and a pair of shorthanded markers, which leads the NHL.

“Zero Leadership skills” – Said by the clueless who never played hockey in their lives types

“Whiner” – The same thing people who never played hockey called Gretzky and Lemieux

Funny how the people who actually play the game have completely different takes than the fan. Oh yes you have your Mike Millbury’s and such, so ya, enjoy being on THAT guy’s side of hockey takes.

    • tcclark - Apr 17, 2012 at 3:07 PM

It’s been Talbot (a good friend of Corsby’s) and Don Cherry (a whackado) that haven’t said bad things about him. Everyone else has.

Mario is disgusted by the way his team played. I’ll be on THAT guys side

      • bloggersarenotjournalists - Apr 17, 2012 at 3:21 PM

Mario should be THRILLED being down 3-0?

Way to go out on a limb and excellent job avoiding commenting on what I said about people who label Crosby a “whiner” and has “Zero Leadership skills”

Do you think that’s what Mario was saying?

        You should go into politics

      • bloggersarenotjournalists - Apr 17, 2012 at 3:26 PM

        “Everyone else has”

Not a single hockey person in Canada on TSN or Sportsnet has said anything of the sort.

Yet again, people think they can just make up any bit of garbage on the internet and call it fact.

        A Single
        Hockey guy
        On the
        Hockey Related Channels

Have even HINTED at what you just said

But according to you, “Everyone else has”
Ya radio and newspaper hacks that don’t even watch what they write about half the time, people who’s industries are dying and need to say something different to get people to listen?

And look 9 thumbs up for your complete and utter lie based on zero fact.

But that’s how “hockey” fans are around here. Casual hockey onlookers who would need instruction and 30 mins to get geared up.

      • crosberries - Apr 17, 2012 at 3:36 PM

Hmmm dont most of the people who have been outspoken about Crosby being a whiner and a bad captain all have ties to the flyers organization??

      • bennywisest - Apr 17, 2012 at 3:45 PM

See I always thought it was illegal for any Canadians to talk bad about Crosby.

      • tcclark - Apr 17, 2012 at 7:13 PM

        @ blogger

Mario’s not disgusted because they’re down 3-0. He’s disgusted (according to a source) about the way they played on sunday. Meaning the cheap shots, the dirty plays, etc. etc.

As for your “whiner” and “Zero Leadership Skills” comments. John Tortorella is a hockey guy and was at the forefront of that a couple weeks ago. Flyers players have been saying it for years, but obviously these aren’t good enough unbiased hockey guys for you.

How about 52% of the NHL voted Sidney Crosby as the biggest whiner in the league according to an ESPN Poll to the players. That’s a large number of hockey guys.

        Than Half
        of the
        hockey guys
        in the
        Hockey League

said he was the BIGGEST whiner.

The same poll asked who the best leader was and 20 players got multiple votes including former Flyers Captain Mike Richards (who Flyers fans have questioned the leadership skills of for years now). Crosby was no where to be found.

and I’m sorry for my “everyone else has” comment. I didn’t think you’d take me literally. When i say everyone else, I don’t mean that every single person in the world has said that sidney crosby is a whiner or a punk or whatever. I meant that every other person who has commented on the situation has said negative things about him, in respect to that game. The only exceptions being Don Cherry and Max Talbot. I apologize for the confusion.

btw the hockey fans on here have liked my comment because they were able to follow along. Sorry you couldn’t.

When did Tortorella coach the Flyers? I also didn’t know that 52% of the NHL has ties to the Flyers. You guys need to get out of Pittsburgh once in a while. Go somewhere where you can breath some fresh air. The smoke must be killing the brain cells.

    • al25ny - Apr 17, 2012 at 3:11 PM

      totally agree

    • bennywisest - Apr 17, 2012 at 3:18 PM

Absolutely correct, Crosby is a great leader and will lead the rest of the Pens to their tee time Thursday morning! And of course he isn’t a whiner the weather looks fabulous! Should be a great start to the offseason.

    • joebuckiscreepy - Apr 17, 2012 at 3:21 PM

Talbot is being classy, taking the high road, displaying sportsmanship, etc…things that Crosby is showing that he cares less and less about by the day.

      • bloggersarenotjournalists - Apr 17, 2012 at 3:30 PM

THIS is the type of stupidity I am talking about.

Hockey players do not stop caring

Oh wait it’s about Crosby so lets forget everything we know and agree with the stupid statement of ignorance.

      • bennywisest - Apr 17, 2012 at 3:44 PM

@bloggersarenotjournalists Did you even read joebuckiscreepy’s post? He says Crosby is showing that he cares less and less about “being classy, taking the high road, displaying sportsmanship, etc.”. Nowhere does he say Crosby gave up.

      • tcclark - Apr 17, 2012 at 7:16 PM

Bennywisest relax. This dude’s got a bigger vagina than Crosby

    • jelliot1978 - Apr 17, 2012 at 3:34 PM

So when former players like Jeremy Roenick make comments about Crosby that means nothing? And for the record JR really likes Malkin.

Listen, Crosby is one of the best players in the game and has the potential to be an all-time great but he has earned his reputation as a whiner from his early years. Now it is hard for him to shed that label as you can still see him complaining at times to the ref, but it is not as bad as he was nor is it overly above what some other players do.

His antics this past Sunday though were what started a lot of the scrums, he whacked at the goalies glove a few times after the whistle which will always start the pushing, grabbing and other little stuff. Then as that was dying down he smacks the glove of Vorachek away as his hand was right there. Of course that is going to start things right back up and who does he go after? The old defenseman who maybe had 2 fights his whole career?

I can understand not wanting to fight as he has had severe concussions but don’t start them and then run away or wait for the linesman to break it up. He didn’t try anything with Giroux (who also had a concussion this year but not the history like Sid) until the linesman is there and decides to throw punches.

      • bloggersarenotjournalists - Apr 18, 2012 at 1:42 PM

Roenick is a league wide JOKE ok?

Dont EVER use JR as someone to support your statements

        JR and Millbury

BTW I stopped reading after you mentioned JR

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 17, 2012 at 4:29 PM

MAX this is not time for nicey nice Philadelphia has been without a cup for 37 years ! I noticed you have been unsure of yourself when a scrum breaks out ! To borrow a line from Sonny in the BRONX TALE “your friends are jerk0ffs ” !

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 17, 2012 at 4:32 PM

Hey Max Philly needs a cup and this is no time for nicey nice,,,,,,,,, its been 37 years ! To borrow a line from Sonny in the Bronx Tale ” your friends are jerk-offs ” !

      Nicley said.

  2. malkinrulez - Apr 17, 2012 at 3:07 PM

Well said max! What he has done to the pens this year was my biggest fear when he signed with Philly. His contributions to the pens will never be forgotten.

  3. cleverbob - Apr 17, 2012 at 3:08 PM

So his former teammate and friend didn’t bash him to the media. Vindication for Crosby!

    • paulsdamnblog - Apr 17, 2012 at 3:24 PM

Not really. If you’re any member of the Flyers, you don’t want to provide any locker room material to help fire up the Pen’s. Talbot could have easily came out and said Crosby instigated this and that, but by taking the highroad he gives them nothing. Notice, nobody else on the Flyers have said a thing either, they’re just going about their days business as usual. Meanwhile, the rest of the hockey watching world gets to see a rivalry get better and better. It’s a shame this can’t be the conference finals, the NHL would love the ratings this series would get.

      • cleverbob - Apr 17, 2012 at 3:37 PM

I completely agree with you. Next time I’ll lay on the sarcasm a little more heavily like somekat did below.

  4. napoleonblownapart6887 - Apr 17, 2012 at 3:15 PM

God I miss Tablo – the contributions that guy can make in a locker room are absolutely incredible. He’s hysterical, he’s a hard worker, great leader – guys like this become worth their weight in gold the playoffs.

His assessment of Sidney is fair – I truly believe that his actions last game were more of him throwing up his hands in frustration so-to-speak (and no pun intended). But the Kid needs to mature a LOT and realize that those are the times when it is important to maintain your composure more than anything….. in short – he needs to be more like Talbot.

Now if you’ll excuse me I’ve reached my quota of nice things I can say about a team that is about to unceremoniously bounce my team from the playoffs, so I’ll just show myself out.

  5. somekat - Apr 17, 2012 at 3:19 PM

Was Crosby’s mother not available for an interview?

I for one am shocked that his teammate for 5 years, currently playing him didn’t personally attack him in the media. I mean, so many of his teammates have. There has been………………….

It’s called dignity and class, I understand why the Pens can’t figure that out, I may we well be spreaking sanscrit

    • rpb1234 - Apr 17, 2012 at 4:01 PM

  6. watermelon1 - Apr 17, 2012 at 3:44 PM

It’s easy for Crosby to start all that after whistle tussling when it’s
Obvious the NHL mandated that nobody is allowed to touch him. No way does he get away with that stuff and Nobody even face washes him knowing he’s got a soft concussed head.

  7. emperorzero - Apr 17, 2012 at 3:59 PM

I love the conspiracy theories that the league is out to protect Crosby. Yes, the guy “whines” for the call, but so did Gretzky, Lemieux and many other great players. The stupid stuff like knocking the glove away from Voracek can go, but there isn’t a team in the league (including the Flyers) that would love to have the guy on their team.

As fans, we can all hope guys like Crosby and Ovechkin will act more like Wayne and Mario, but once again, this just shows how rare those two guys were.

    • somekat - Apr 17, 2012 at 4:13 PM

Please post video of Super Mario or The Great One pulling someone’s hair from behind

  8. bobhpine - Apr 17, 2012 at 4:23 PM

literally no one is claiming Crosby pulled hartnells hair…except for this mouth breathing dope

  9. dawglb - Apr 17, 2012 at 4:27 PM

Max Talbot was a great pick up by the Flyers. I am glad he is there to stay.

  10. jkaflagg - Apr 17, 2012 at 7:35 PM

Still have no idea how the Pens let Talbot get away, especially to the Flyers – his contract numbers were pretty reasonable.

  11. tbinderio - Apr 17, 2012 at 7:59 PM

bloggersarenotjournalists is funny. Keep it going. Crosby is a great player, but come on…guy is a bit of a b*tch. Everyone, hockey players, non hockey plays, casual fans, intense fans, analysts……everyone thinks that. I mean, the guy has incredible skill, but he’s a punk in the NHL.
