Peverley on Backstrom: “He tried to cross-check me in the face”

While Washington Capitals head coach Dale Hunter doesn’t think that Nicklas Backstrom‘s late cross-check on Rich Peverley was all that bad, the Boston Bruins aren’t as convinced. Peverley didn’t go as far as to call for Backstrom to sit out Game 4, but he was candid if unmoved about the situation with’s Chuck Gormley.

“He tried to cross-check me in the face,” Peverley said. “We’ll let the league deal with that.”

“I felt a couple guys run me. I was trying to hold the puck up. It’s playoffs, tempers are going to go. Whatever. It’s high intensity and guys are going to be doing stuff like that.”

Hunter said that the hit wasn’t really suspension-worthy. (Click here for somewhat-decent video evidence.) As a rare member of the 1,000+ points and PIM club, the Capitals’ coach seems like a good judge of hockey scrums, so it says something that Hunter compared the third period of tonight’s game to rugby.

It seems likely to expect even more rough stuff as the series goes along, whether Backstrom is suspended or not.

Here is one more look at the incident:

Another classy Bruin taking the high road. Settle it on the ice with class and dignity!

What about the sucker punching by Lucic and the Bruins?

      • crmgoodness - Apr 17, 2012 at 12:11 AM

You are such a tired broken record. What about them? They are the same as every other team in the playoffs. I know, the cross checks and slashes and any violence to a Bruin are all deserved and part of a Karma conspiracy. Your blind hatred of the Bruins just smacks of an inferiority complex. Get a hobby.

You are right, Alzner should be suspended too!

      • dolanster - Apr 17, 2012 at 12:27 AM

Jesus man, do you have that sucker-punch line macro’d to a single keystroke by now?

      • amerika1313 - Apr 17, 2012 at 7:59 AM

You guys, I think we should lay off of Habsman. I used to get really worked up over his inane babbling and tired cliches and conspiracy theories, but…the more I read his posts, the more I think he may really, sincerely be developmentally disabled. We should probably just pat him on the back and say “Good job typing all by yourself, buddy! You’re a winner!” then clean up the drool from the desk in front of him, and just let him keep on commenting…

How are your Canadiens doing in the playoffs this year?

    • pepper2011 - Apr 17, 2012 at 8:03 AM

They have to suspend him a game. It is sending the absolute wrong message if they don’t about star treatment. They already blew the Weber non suspension. If they do not suspend for this; it is pretty much saying if you are an all star you can do what you want and not be penalized, but if you are Asham you have to sit. If the situation was reversed and Peverely delivered the same cross check to the chin on backstrom (recently back from concussion) what do you think the sentiment would be? Hands in faces, light (not carkner-esq) punches, stick work, face washes, etc…- that’s all part of hockey and anyone who thinks it doesn’t go on both ways is watching the game the wrong way. Like Brouwer on Krejci or Marchand on Green – it happens both ways when guys start cross checking above the collar bone; that’s when things get ugly and out of hand. The game was over and slash to the ankle or a glove to the face would have made the same point. If you notice it started because of Ovechkin’s hit and stick work; Peverely retaliated with a stick to the legs to take him down; not the head.

No way you’re going to see a Shanaban for that. Backstrom was just stirring the pot.
Peverly’s a big boy, he seems content to take care of it himself.

    • jpelle82 - Apr 17, 2012 at 1:23 PM

i agree, backstrom has no history and this wasnt asham-like at all.

  3. sabatimus - Apr 16, 2012 at 11:47 PM

Regardless of what discipline gets handed out, remember that this is DALE HUNTER talking down the severity of a hit.

  4. vivaronmexico - Apr 17, 2012 at 12:04 AM

Not that I care that much – but nobody has pointed out what Ovi did there? The check was fine, but he then instantly pitchforcked Peverley in the nuts, which is why Peverley slashed at Ovi’s ankles. Backstrom only saw the tail end.

Man you are an insufferable honk.

So Lucic threw a punch, didnt Hendricks return the favor? Or do you just turn the tv off after the first Bruin “sucker punch”. I know I know I’m “spinning” because I’m such a bruins honk, let’s just get that comment out of the way so you don’t waste your time with a reply.

Don’t ever address the Bruins opponents’ cheap shots there habsman. don’t mention Backstrom cross checking peverley in the face. Don’t mention alzner being the 3rd man in from behind then turtling when chara and Lucic go after him. Don’t even say anything when the match penalty gets rescinded because the league doesn’t have the balls to uphold it.

    • vivaronmexico - Apr 17, 2012 at 12:16 AM

I felt like Lucic was the aggressor there and it was the right call. Maybe not the worst thing ever – but I’m glad he got the double for being stupid enough to lose your cool on a crucial PP in a tied game with 3 minutes left.

    • dcdangles - Apr 17, 2012 at 7:14 AM

      What is a honk?

Nicky shouldn’t be suspended. This is a great series so far and you gotta expect some of this stuff on both sides. Chimera’s ball-shot to Marchand was ridiculous and an example of taking things too far. Glad he apologized for it.

Let’s let the boys play. I say we focus our negative energy on making fun of how terrible the Penguins are right now!

      • thesableo - Apr 17, 2012 at 12:24 PM

It was actually Alzner that apologized to Marchand, I guess for an elbow to the head that flew under the radar. A lot of people reported it was Chimera at first, but it wasn’t.

This is exactly why fighting should never be banned from the NHL (not that it would be). Backstrom should have just threw down the gloves, but he didn’t want to. So instead he crosschecked Peverley’s face. Maybe he didn’t want to fight in the last 5 minutes. Maybe he just sucks at fighting (probably the answer), but regardless, he didn’t fight- and he should have if he took offense at what happened to Ovechkin. You would see A LOT more of this type of outburst if fighting wasn’t such a huge part of the game.

What the hell was Peverley thinking? He wasn’t…

For those of you with bliders on, look at the video at 0:23. Clearly shows Ovechkin nailing Peverley in the groin. What was Perverley supposed to do, thank him! Backstrom didn’t like it so he used his stick not fighting like a man!
