The 2012 Pulitzer Prize winners were announced today and the New York Times’ story about Derek Boogaard’s life and death was nominated in the “Feature Writing” category.

Though it didn’t win (this did), the Boogaard feature should gain a whole new audience with today’s announcement.

If you haven’t read it yet:

Part 1 – A Boy Learns to Brawl

Part 2 – Blood on the Ice

Part 3 – A Brain “Going Bad”

Such a great and moving piece. Its a shame no NHL execs seem to have read it.

how exactly did Boogard pass away? I’ve read reports it was drugs and alcohol…then I read it might have been brain damage they found after an autopsy. very, very sad situation. it kind of scary he was so young.
