The New York Islanders announced today that assistant coaches Scott Allen and Dean Chynoweth will not be back next season.

Both Allen and Chynoweth were on staff before head coach Scott Gordon was fired in 2010 and replaced with Jack Capuano. So while we’re not saying they were forced on Capuano, maybe he wants to bring in his own guys.

A couple of weeks ago, team owner Charles Wang confirmed Capuano and GM Garth Snow would be back next season.

Firing assistant coaches always helps a team. Look what it did for the Habs this season!

Judging by that picture, Allen is 32 feet tall. It’s possible his message wasn’t getting through simply because nobody could hear him from up there.

As long as Snow is a decision maker the Isles will flounder

Garth Snow is a hands on GM who knows his team. Hopefully he is doing the right thing in keeping Cappy. I’d have replaced him–possibly with Mike Haviland of the Hawks. The team cannot be allowed to go in the toilet early as it has the past two years. Hopefully Cappy can keep them on an even keel this time so they will at least be within a few points of the 8th seed if not in a playoff spot next Deadline Day.

When Mike Haviland finally gets his shot as head coach, he will win the Cup within his first five years.
