Discuss: Kings grind away Canucks, take 3-0 series lead

Apr 16, 2012, 1:16 AM EDT

It’s common to call the Los Angeles Kings “Philadelphia Flyers West,” but they’ve traveled to their 3-0 series lead in a wildly different way compared to their spiritual cousins. While the Flyers thrash the Penguins in increasingly bizarre games, the Kings eked out another zero-margin-of-error victory as Jonathan Quick out-dueled Cory Schneider in a 1-0 win.

Feel free to explore the studio space, but here are a few questions to ponder to start things off.

  • Did Alain Vigneault make the right choice by switching from Roberto Luongo to Schneider? Scoring obviously has been a huge issue for the Canucks in recent playoff games, so what should AV do to turn things around?
  • If you put together a goaltender power rankings, where would you rank Quick? Also, would you start him in front of Tim Thomas and Ryan Miller in the 2014 Olympics (assuming that the NHL participates, of course)?
  • Much like Pittsburgh, the Canucks find themselves in a 3-0 hole. In a way, though, the two teams share their captains’ images; while Sidney Crosby has a little egg on his face, Henrik Sedin gained serious kudos for bouncing back from a huge hit by Dustin Brown. How much of a chance does Vancouver have to come back? Is it any better than the Penguins’ or is there no real difference to you?
  • Considering his game-winning goal and thunderous check, those Dustin Brown trade rumors seem even sillier in hindsight, don’t they?
  • Do you think the Kings have what it takes to make a deep run in the playoffs despite being the West’s eighth seed?
  • Conversely, could a possible first round exit bring some huge, painful changes in Vancouver?

As a bonus, here’s video of Will Ferrell professing his puck love:

So what do the Canucks do now? Schenider was really good in this one, but Quick has outplayed both Vancouver goalies so far.

    • blomfeld - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:48 AM

what do the Canucks do now ? … well for starters, they ship Luongo back east in the summer !

      • joeyjojoshabadoo - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:59 AM

Goalie trade is happening regardless of outcome, but Schneider brings more value and the Canucks have more young goalies in the system. After watching Edler this series, wouldn’t mind a move to bring a real #1 defenceman. Kid’s ok but he’s arguably the worst #1 in the playoffs, or at least is playing like it.

    • tommytd - Apr 16, 2012 at 6:18 AM

      Break up the sisters!

    • icelovinbrotha215 - Apr 16, 2012 at 7:30 AM

Well like I said previously, putting Schenider in net was a panic move and the Kings smelled weakness. So what now? The Cunucks faithful better hope their puts up a 4-spot rally.

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Apr 16, 2012 at 7:47 AM

Yup, there’s no more moves left to make. My guess is Schneider gets the start in Game 4.

  2. danohalloranisahatchetman - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:23 AM

Hmmm. Where to begin. How about with Brown’s $&@n headshot on Henrik not warranting a penalty let alone a game misconduct? Someone told me a month ago that the league wants a Rangers-Kings final so maybe that’s what’s behind this Bitz-like hit somehow not getting much attention from the on ice officials. Or Hagelin getting no misconduct for his BLATANT elbow into Alfy’s face. And for the record I’m neither a Canucks fan or a Sens fan. Just fed up with the ret@rds who run the NHL ruining the game.

    • comeonnowguys - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:26 AM

At what point do they relabel the President’s Trophy “Participant?”

      • Buffalo Grumblings - Apr 16, 2012 at 10:08 AM

It don’t mean a thing without that ring!

    • oscojoe - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:29 AM

Clearly a Shoulder to Shoulder hit on Sedin, clean check. Canucks are good enough to come back but do they have the character to do so? We will find out!!!

      • danohalloranisahatchetman - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:43 AM

Wow. Shoulder to shoulder hey? Yet somehow Sedin eded up with a sore jaw? Haha. Some people will try to rationalize anything.

      • tommytd - Apr 16, 2012 at 6:19 AM

They don’t have any character and they never have…that’s the problemo!

      • cba77 - Apr 16, 2012 at 11:00 AM

umm, Henrik said it was a clean hit….sorry dano, time to put on your Ottawa sweater.

    • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:52 AM

Did you watch the game? Brown drove his shoulder into Sedin’s chest and his head snapped back both on the hit and when he hit the ice. That doesn’t make it a head shot. It was a clean hit, maybe a bit late, but the contact was fine. Some people will try to spin anything.

    • dmcannon99 - Apr 16, 2012 at 2:05 AM

Uh, oh, dano…Hedin says the hit was clean. Oh, well, I guess you can focus your attention on attacking the guy that scored the winner against your team. Or those great conspiracies.

    • hawksandsawx - Apr 16, 2012 at 2:09 AM

hagelin just got suspended 3 games. learn something

    • themohel - Apr 16, 2012 at 8:44 AM

Classic Canuck fan delusions at work here. Sedin himself says the hit was legal, despite his reputation for diving. Yet you somehow see this as similar to the Bitz hit? Where do you get your pharmaceuticals?

  3. botlecap - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:28 AM

Why should sedin get kudos for taking a hit and continuing to play? Isn’t that what hockey players are supposed to do?

  4. typicalmontreal - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:31 AM

LA in my mind was clearly the better team in game 1, but since then Vancouver has been far superior, expect when on the PP. In this game Vancouver completely dominated LA and yet they end up losing. There are lots of reasons for this, but I think it all boils down to the Kings getting really really lucky with bounces and Vancouver getting terrible puck luck. It sure did not help that the Ice was soup out there either. The puck was bouncing more than flubber, and in the end it probably cost Vancouver the game when Edler knocked the bouncing puck that just would not settle from his own zone.

    • dmcannon99 - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:43 AM

Yeah, far superior – that’s why they are down 0-3. And as far as conditions, I’m relatively sure both teams were playing on the same ice, but maybe I’m mistaken…

    • blomfeld - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:46 AM

      God bless you friend …

    • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:55 AM

I’ll say this much about the Edler play: it was a perfect example of why the automatic delay of game rule is stupid. Nobody in their right mind would try to put the puck out of play on purpose at that point in the game.

Although, based on the quality of the refereeing we’ve seen, it’s understandable that the league wants as few rules as possible left to the refs’ discretion.

    • cableguymike - Apr 16, 2012 at 5:09 PM

LA has done a good job of capitalizing on the Canucks mistakes. That’s really been the difference in this series. Canucks could be up 2-1 just as easily as they are down 3-0. Edler’s mistakes have definitely been the most glaring.

In regards to the ice, they do both play on the same ice but a couple things to note:

1.) LA has had 41 games practice playing on that crap ice which is the definition of home ice advantage
2.) LA’s game is not built on speed and skill like the Canucks game is so bad ice is going to hurt the Canucks, generally speaking, more than it will LA’s style of play.

Regardless, Canucks need to get it done. Pure and simple. Here’s hoping the reports of Sedin possibly coming back are true and let’s see if we can rattle off 4 straight wins against Sloth and Co.

I think I might fly to Vanvouver for the President’s Cup parade & bonfire.

  6. highlander24 - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:31 AM

One game away from another riot up there! GO KINGS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • blomfeld - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:35 AM

      you rock man !

      • danohalloranisahatchetman - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:44 AM

        Dustin Brown licks pouch.

  7. blomfeld - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:33 AM

We beat them friends and we did it in style ! Needless to say, the House of Blomfeld is now in an absolute euphoric state … and so let me just offer an “electronic” cheers to all ! :)

  8. cableguymike - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:35 AM

I’m only going to weigh in to say that hasn’t LA had more riots than any other city? Might wanna lay off the riot jokes, guys.

    • blomfeld - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:40 AM

hey man … Canadian Tire’s going to have a sale on fire accelerant tomorrow … do you wanna go halfer’s and get some for Wednesday ? :)

    • mornelithe - Apr 16, 2012 at 7:42 AM

Yes,. LA has had a few riots, most noteably about a racial situation. Far, far more serious than losing the Stanley Cup. Though, during the riots many homes and businesses were burned which makes absolutely no sense, but still, it was a far more serious circumstance than babies shedding some tears over losing a match!

      • cableguymike - Apr 16, 2012 at 3:31 PM

Yeah. You guys only riot over the important stuff for sure.

      • cableguymike - Apr 16, 2012 at 5:04 PM

To clarify, you guys riot over basketball…BASKETBALL…

    • mgp1219 - Apr 16, 2012 at 8:47 AM

I’m from Boston so I guess I can make all the riot jokes that I want to make.
Vancouver on the verge of being eliminated in the first round, now that’s a riot!!! Hahahahahahaha!!!!

How’s that President’s Cup workin’ for ya?? Perhaps they should rename that trophy “The Vancouver Cannots Cup”.

      • cableguymike - Apr 16, 2012 at 3:30 PM

        Yup. No riots on Boston.

  9. comeonnowguys - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:36 AM

Bad news for Kings fans: Your town has had more riots than Vancouver, so you have to find a new joke.
Good news for Kings fans: That’s one more thing you’re better at than Vancouver.

    • blomfeld - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:44 AM

you want a new joke ? … well how about that guy standing up behind the Canuck’s bench throughout the entire game, with the shirt that read … “Sedin Sisters, Two Girls, 0 Cups ?” … :)

      • danohalloranisahatchetman - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:53 AM

Anyone else think its ignorant to call a couple of guys who play as well as the Sedins and are apparently known to donate huge cash to charity girls? Not to mention how lame it is to snicker about somehow else doing it?

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:56 AM

        No. Nobody.

      • itwasafumble - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:59 AM

        Yeah, that was hilarious.

      • joeyjojoshabadoo - Apr 16, 2012 at 2:04 AM

Some genius in 1999: hey those Sedin guys are brothers, you know what would be funny? If we called them sisters! HAHA classic!

13 years later, some other brilliant thinker: Hey guys! Waaaaazzzzzzuuuup, haha that joke is still great. Those Sedin sisters suck, amiright?!

Is a joke still a joke if it’s witless?

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Apr 16, 2012 at 2:16 AM

Joey, your name is missing the Jr. part.

      • joeyjojoshabadoo - Apr 16, 2012 at 2:17 AM

        Here’s some new material:

Booth with no goals in the series? Maybe a little less time on the tanning bed and get some practice in.

Kesler looks out of sorts, maybe he’d be more comfortable in the nude.

At least Burrows looks hungry out there… or maybe he just spotted those foam fingers the vendors were selling.

There, I’m doing your job for you.

The lighter side of losing! Night all.

      • joeyjojoshabadoo - Apr 16, 2012 at 2:35 AM

You’re thinking of my son, joey jojo shabadoo jr. Although he goes by ‘Dennis’, says his given name is “the worst sounding fake name I’ve ever heard” pretty harsh.

      • comeonnowguys - Apr 16, 2012 at 9:38 AM

I have to believe they’re called sisters because of the diving.

If that whole “sisters” thing caught on because some dude looked at them and simply said, “Brothers? More like sisters LOLOLOL!,” then my faith in humanity takes yet another hit.

      • cableguymike - Apr 16, 2012 at 4:56 PM

The irony is a fan from a team with ZERO CUPS THEMSELVES making fun of another team that has never won the cup.

That guy obviously went to one of those really good LA schools I always hear about.

  10. danohalloranisahatchetman - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:42 AM

Anyone else think its weird that Brown has weird always wet fish lips?

    • dmcannon99 - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:47 AM

I think it’s kind of weird that you’re focusing on his lips…

      • danohalloranisahatchetman - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:50 AM

It’s kinda hard to miss them given how huge and pouty and glistening they are. It’s like he applies lip
gloss before every shift. Which might explain why he turtled when Bieksa grabbed him.

    • dmcannon99 - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:55 AM

I think somebody is a little unhappy that somebody scored a game-winner against his team.

  11. slumdog66 - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:58 AM

Can’t really run the whole two girls no cup joke. Kings don’t have one either and they couldn’t win one with the great one. That joke is for teams WITH a cup. It’s really not that hard to understand

    • cableguymike - Apr 16, 2012 at 5:02 PM

In fact, it opens up the door to people saying at least the CITY of Vancouver has more cups than LA. 1-0. Which just makes the whole conversation that much more retarded.

  12. thehighcountrybear - Apr 16, 2012 at 2:35 AM

Damn…the lawn bowling and cricket pitches are gonna be standing room only come the weekend; this while hoping torrential spring rains suppress the holocaust to come up Vancouver way? And here’s me, thinking I might sneak- in a few quiet rounds of golf before the Canucks plug tee times at the down market pitch and putts? Fore…maybe five and gone! Life is good…

  13. hockinj25 - Apr 16, 2012 at 11:31 AM

Best part of the game was the “two sisters no cup” shirt behind the Canucks bench.

    • terminalcityhockey - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:50 PM

Sorry, remind me which year did the Kings win the cup again?

      • hockinj25 - Apr 16, 2012 at 2:02 PM

I never said the Kings have won a cup. I’m just saying the shirt was funny. Settle down.

  14. mgp1219 - Apr 16, 2012 at 4:11 PM

yes, great shirt behind the vancouver bench.

    Boston 2011. Thank you

    Is that better?
