Cause for concern? Mike Smith misses practice

Apr 16, 2012, 8:25 PM EDT

GLENDALE, AZ - APRIL 14: Goaltender Mike Smith #41 of the Phoenix Coyotes warms up before Game Two of the Western Conference Quarterfinals against the Chicago Blackhawks during the 2012 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs at Arena on April 14, 2012 in Glendale, Arizona. On Sunday, Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith said he felt 100 percent after being leveled by Chicago’s Andrew Shaw during Saturday’s game. Smith was able to stay in the contest, but on Monday, he gave us a reason to be concerned by missing Phoenix’s practice.

Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said that Smith was being evaluated and wouldn’t confirm his availability for Game 3 on Tuesday. Smith is a big part of the reason the Coyotes made the playoffs in the first place.

If you’re a Phoenix Coyotes’ fan, then the news only gets worse from there. Martin Hanzal and Lauri Korpikoski both left Saturday’s game with undisclosed injuries and neither participated in Monday’s practice. Korpikoski and Hanzal both appear to be questionable for Game 3 on Tuesday.

How was he allowed to stay in the game?

    • bensawesomeness - Apr 16, 2012 at 10:03 PM

I’m not saying it’s ok, but it’s alot harder to wait while your starting goalie sits in the quiet room than it is to wait for a skater

the NHL needs to take the decision out of anyone involving the NHL’s hands, into independent 3rd source ( like doctors ) and give them ultimate authority to pull any player off the ice when they think they need to sit and be evaluated

  2. micklethepickle - Apr 16, 2012 at 9:03 PM

    Andrew Shaw, not Smith.

  3. rgledz - Apr 16, 2012 at 9:06 PM

His back is sore from flinging himself around when the sniper shot hit him. You’d be sore too if you embellished his hardcore as he did/does.

  4. yotesfan3 - Apr 16, 2012 at 9:29 PM

The true actors are in chicago, they took flopping lessons from the canucks!

  5. sabatimus - Apr 16, 2012 at 9:32 PM

Smith must’ve consulted with Ryan Miller about how to properly give yourself whiplash.

  6. bhwksr1 - Apr 16, 2012 at 9:48 PM

Smith, drama queen. He would fight like Crosby. You can’t get me, and if you can I’ll keep my mask/faceshield on. He may as well wear a dress for how well he danced. Welcome to the NHL, leave space open behind the net for skaters to get by or get hit. Shaw was trying to get out of the way. He had no where to go.

  7. johnnyru131 - Apr 16, 2012 at 10:05 PM

Anyone with a brain could see that Shaw did lower his shoulder or even moved his body near Smith. He wasn’t trying to run into him. Smith is the actor and also got away with horrible call when he pushed Toews and Toews got the penalty for doing absolutely nothing wrong. The refs are such a joke. Shaw should’ve gotten a TWO min penalty, NOT a game misconduct. What a joke.

  8. johnnyru131 - Apr 16, 2012 at 10:10 PM

Excuse me, Shaw DIDN’T lower his shoulder. Not “DID” Sorry.

  9. donttoewsmebro19 - Apr 16, 2012 at 10:14 PM

Lol yotes fan please explain how anyone from Chicago dives or flops. Around like they got shot or like a fish out of water. I watched all 82 games this season and I never seen the hawks get a mercy call. If they draw a penalty it’s cause they work hard and out play the other team. Not diving and flopping like mike smith did that was a complete disgrace to the game of hockey.

  10. proudliberal85392 - Apr 16, 2012 at 10:30 PM

I was sitting 3 rows behind Smith. All of the “experts” are wrong. He was hit hard by a shoulder, was dazed, and probably should have come out of the game.

  11. bhwksr1 - Apr 16, 2012 at 10:30 PM

Smith should have been given a 5:00 for diving and a game misconduct. Too bad this was not an option. He will hear it tomorrow in Chicago. I’ll be yelling at him personally. I sit 5 rows behind him in the second period. If he plays, though. He maybe watching dancing with the stars for pointers. Even luongo was saying WTF!

  12. proudliberal85392 - Apr 16, 2012 at 10:35 PM

bhwksr1 sounds worried about the yotes. Blaming the victim is the last refuge of scoundrels.

  13. bhwksr1 - Apr 16, 2012 at 10:56 PM

Yeah, terrified. Terrified that the cryotes will continue to get calls that are unsubstantiated. Hawks in six.

  14. proudliberal85392 - Apr 16, 2012 at 11:03 PM

    Yotes in 7.

  15. bhwksr1 - Apr 16, 2012 at 11:06 PM

That’s the same score smith received from the dancing with the stars judges. Would have been better, but he pulled a groin flailing. Or was that after when he was sleeping, dreaming of his moves?

  16. cableguymike - Apr 16, 2012 at 11:12 PM

So if Smith is diagnosed with a concussion that will make two star players the Hawks have taken out with headshots and in both cases the fans will have accused the player of faking it. Hawks fans are becoming a bigger joke by the day.

  17. donttoewsmebro19 - Apr 16, 2012 at 11:15 PM

proudliberal85392 so are you going to travel to Quebec when your team is move there?

  18. proudliberal85392 - Apr 16, 2012 at 11:18 PM

cableguymike is absolutely right. Blackhawks fans are becoming a joke.

  19. proudliberal85392 - Apr 16, 2012 at 11:19 PM

donttoewsmebro19 Don’t believe everything you read.

  20. donttoewsmebro19 - Apr 16, 2012 at 11:28 PM

Any one with a brain can see what smith is doing holding out to make the league decision.Even harder why do you think they postponed the ruling till tomorrow. It’s just another cheap tactic phoenix is trying to pull. If I see Labarbara in the game tomorrow. I will say other wise and admit I’m wrong. But till then I’m convinced it’s a tactic to give phx all the help they can get.

  21. johnnyru131 - Apr 16, 2012 at 11:31 PM

How are Hawks fans becoming a joke? Shaw didn’t LOWER any shoulder, he actually tried moving his shoulder OUT OF THE WAY, he wanted to really run Smith over he could’ve. Watch the replay, Shaw didn’t make any hitting motion was when made contact with Smith. The evidence is in the replay.

    • cardsandbluesforever - Apr 17, 2012 at 1:36 AM

i was watching that game saw the collision. that was in no way shape or form Shaw’s fault. Smith basically decided he was going to jump out in front of a freight train. Shaw lightly clipped his head, im sure it was a bit of a jolt but it was a glancing blow that was nowhere near as serious as Smith’s acting made it out to be. otherwise why did he stay in goal? played just fine the rest of the game, couldnt tell he had been in any collision at all.

unless we see Labarbara in goal the next game we will all know Smith or the Coyote’s organization is attempting to embellish the incident.

Also i have not seen the hawks diving nor taking cheap shots throught the season, Quennville is a very respectable coach and does not allow his players to behave that way on the ice.

this is coming from someone who has hated the Blackhawks with a passion for oer 25 years.

  22. bhwksr1 - Apr 16, 2012 at 11:32 PM

Hard for cryote fans to know what playoff hockey is when this is their first time in since the Winnipeg mopeds, I mean Jets, moved to the desert. Another city that the NHL should NOT have moved to.

  23. donttoewsmebro19 - Apr 16, 2012 at 11:34 PM

Really the NHL owns the coyotes they will do what they want with it. If some one in Quebec or Seattle want to buy and move your team.It will happen just watch and see. Your city is complete garbage and don’t want an NHL team there so why would the NHL keep it there. It will happen soon just watch.

  24. proudliberal85392 - Apr 16, 2012 at 11:37 PM

johnnyru131, maybe, but sitting a few feet from the collision, it certainly looked to me like Shaw raised his shoulder, like a young player trying to make his mark.

  25. donttoewsmebro19 - Apr 16, 2012 at 11:40 PM

Well phx has been in the playoffs for a few years now. They just have always been out in the first round of the playoffs. Yet this year was the first time they were 1st in the pacific division and the 3rd seed in the playoffs. Just cause were talking smack. Doesn’t mean we can’t get the facts right now all hawks fans are dumb and follow all other teams in hockey not just fair weather bandwagon fans.

  26. johnnyru131 - Apr 16, 2012 at 11:42 PM

After the hit, only did Shaw make any upward movement. Shaw tried turning into the glass and as he did Smiths head hit Shaw’s shoulder. I think it was just something that was unfortunate for everyone involved. Anyway Shaw won’t be suspended and if he is then the NHL would a serious joke considering Weber didn’t get suspended.

  27. proudliberal85392 - Apr 16, 2012 at 11:47 PM

No matter what, it was pretty ugly. Anyway I hope you guys are going to the games there. The first two have been great. Have fun and may the best team win, which, of course, is the Coyotes. I do agree about the bandwagon fans who don’t know a bagel from a puck!

  28. donttoewsmebro19 - Apr 16, 2012 at 11:54 PM

Another thing is honestly the way the NHL is being officiating now I would say is just crazy. Im more perplexed on how TOEWS gets a penalty for goaltender interference when smith came out and pushed and charged him. How is it legal for the goalie to do what he wants to a forward but when a forward or d man even nicks a goalie Its a penalty. It has to stop I don’t care I think if the goalie comes out of his crease especially behind the net he should be fair game. There the most protected armored player on the ice. I say take the trapezoid out of the game and make the goalie stay in the net. I mean look what does smith expect when he comes out to play the puck. Does he just think the hawk forwards are going to dump it in. Let him just come out and let him play it. So your d men are almost out of your zone. Cause they know he will clear it out of there then Doan or your other forwards are cheating all the time waiting for a breakaways. Teams are only going to let him get away with it for so long. Goalies are far from fragile and need to stop being treated that way. I’m not saying this as a hawks fan I’m saying that as a hockey fan it’s getting old and needs to stop.

  29. mgspike - Apr 17, 2012 at 12:02 AM

Coyotes deserve to be up 2. I hope Smith can play and shut the door on flying elbow Keith, ugly bolland and beat up a cabbie Kane. Coyotes in 7!

  30. proudliberal85392 - Apr 17, 2012 at 12:07 AM

donttoewsmebro19. I can’t argue with you. If the goalie’s in the crease, leave him alone, otherwise, whatever. And, what’s up with the trapezoid? Get rid of it. Goalies who can play the puck should be able to play it from anywhere.
