What got into Sidney Crosby?

Apr 15, 2012, 7:24 PM EDT

Sidney Crosby, Kimmo Timonen Getty Images

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby kicked off the scoring in both Games 1 and 2 against the Flyers, a role we’re accustomed to seeing him play.

Game 3 saw things change drastically.

While Crosby was still trying to help his team score goals (he had one assist), the darker side of Sid the Kid came out. During the first period with the Pens falling behind early, Crosby grabbed Kimmo Timonen by the scruff of his jersey, then dropped the gloves and tussled with Claude Giroux.

Instead of shying away from the scrums, Crosby was initiating action and stirring things up with the whack of his stick here and a shove from behind there. In the third period, Crosby was at his most frustrated and even grabbed Scott Hartnell from behind to engage him. Craig Adams stepped in and saved Sid from making a potentially dire mistake.

This video is no longer available. Click here to watch more NBC Sports videos!

After the game, an 8-4 drubbing by the Flyers, Crosby let his hate flow through him sounding off about how he hates the Flyers and Jakub Voracek in particular as Sam Carchidi of Broad Street Bull reports.

Crosby on Voracek: “I don’t like him. Why? Because I don’t like him. I don’t like any guy on their team.”

We’ve been waiting for a long time to see real emotion out of Crosby and leave it to the Penguins’ most hated rivals to bring it out of him. Now Crosby will need to channel that hate into helping his team climb out of a 3-0 hole.

Hey soupcanarmy and ginopringles, why haven’t we heard from you in the last six days ? Too busy drying your eyes at home with Mrs Crosby’s lady products ?

Probably missed his afternoon nap and had too much candy before the game.

It must be “that time of the month.”
Got his panties stuck up in that dirty snatch.

Props to you Joe Yerdon for having the guts to tell the truth about the NHL’s golden boy! No other sports writer (outside Philly) has the cojones to do this!

    • critter69 - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:06 PM

Actually, a lot of Baltimore/Washington area sports writers also tell the truth about sid the kid being such a wee little one. And some of them were born without ‘cojones’ to begin with, as they are women.

“Instead of shying away from the scrums, Crosby was initiating action and stirring things up with the whack of his stick here and a shove from behind there”

Umm he backed out of like 4 fights he started. He DID SHY AWAY!

I hope his beak gets broken in game 4.

I think Crosby lost a lot of fans today.

    • gbiscottagecheesefatties - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:00 PM

How many outside of Pitts and Canada does he have anyway?

Thou that is a big portion but as Minnesotan and a fellow classmate of his, he is a giant baby and I wish nothing but the worst for him.

  8. orangegesus - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:35 PM

Don’t worry Sid – we all hate you, too. I personally hate you so much, I wish this serious was best of 15 so I could watch you lose eight straight.

  9. dcdangles - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:35 PM

I wish Hartnell had a chance to break Crosby’s nose. The Pens are an embarrassment right now. It’s almost sad to watch, but good lord am I enjoying it.

Love watching these idiots get pounded into the ice.

    • Buffalo Grumblings - Apr 16, 2012 at 10:11 AM

and the Flyers get pounded next. Watch!

That ain’t Bernie Parent in goal for Flyers Scooter!

  10. tangfan - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:36 PM

that kind of play is celebrated in almost every other player, but when Crosby shows an edge all you hypocrites bash him

    • bouch19 - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:41 PM

What kind of play? Poking a guy’s glove away when he’s trying to pick it up then running and hiding behind a goon? No, that kind of play is always called out as the gutless act it is, and Lavy called it a few weeks ago – Penguins are gutless….gutless and cleaning out their lockers on Thursday morning.

      • drunkbro - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:22 PM

i was in philly for a flyers vs pens game this year. giroux knocked malkins stick out of his hands while he was talking to the refs and everyone saw it during a tv timeout. everyone loved it, flyers won, and i think those are the things that make hockey unique and great. ashams cross check to schenns chin is not what makes hockey great.. when he played for the flyers i always said i’d trade him for a cheese sandwich hold the cheese.. glad we swopped nabbed talbot and lost him for sure

    • critter69 - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:09 PM

You mean like pulling on an opponent’s hair, then ‘allowing’ a teammate to take the penalty (including pulling of the hair AGAIN)?

      • Buffalo Grumblings - Apr 16, 2012 at 10:13 AM

He pulled my hair. Why don’t you cut then? I think I saw Hartnell’s picture in the downtown Philadelphia Post Office this weekend.

  11. bouch19 - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:36 PM

Forget about how he feels about his opponent, what about how he feels about his own teammates? He’s the poster boy for the NHL’s season devoted to Concussion Awareness and the Penguins go head-hunting as soon as they feel their season slipping away???

To paraphrase the old adage, people with soft melons shouldn’t throw stones.

  12. imacdane - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:39 PM

It’s easy to initiate scrums when you know every player on your team will do anything to keep you from having to answer for yourself, even if it means them getting a suspension. Oh and if he does happen to get in a fight, he knows just to keep his helmet and visor on.

  13. tangfan - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:42 PM

the flyers won the game, but they were just as bad as the pens, they were equally embarrassing. I didn’t see any flyers avoiding the opportunity to take a cheap shot. and hartnell is a clown, Adams wasn’t pulling his hair he was going for the jersey and he knows it but still went crying to the ref

    • sweezz - Apr 15, 2012 at 8:24 PM

No. As soon as the ref saw him grab Hartnells hair, he broke up the fight. If you are talking about when Hartnell grabbed his own hair and was yelling at someone to tell them about how his hair was pulled… it was Giroux

    • themohel - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:01 PM

I am not a fan of the Flyers, but nothing they did today was in the ballpark of Asham’s cheap shot or Neal’s two.

    • tbo1960 - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:27 PM

Not a Flyers fan either, just a hockey fan and I have to say the Flyers handled themselves well all game. They did not get pulled into the trash, low life style of play that only the Pens get away with as they are the chosen team of the league…. marketing purposes with Sid. I’m pulling for the Flyers to win this in four, it would be great to see them score 8 more in the next game.

  14. dougr42 - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:46 PM

CROSBY IS TRASH. DIRTY DIRTY DIRTY TRASH. How do you pick two fights and then let your teammates finish them for you? Ugh.

  15. tangfan - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:48 PM

hey douche19, I wasn’t referring to a specific play, I was talking about “play” as in how the tough game of hockey is played

    • bouch19 - Apr 15, 2012 at 8:02 PM

What on earth does Crosby do that has anything to do with “the tough game of hockey”? The guy is a gutless wussy who has missed 100+ games the past 2 seasons because of headaches. Stop spanking to your Sid the Kid poster and get a clue.

And those awful anti-smoking ads showing the effect of cigarettes on you and your Pittsburgh brethren are really grossing me out. Maybe next time you guys should learn how to read a warning label before choking down a pack of Marlboros in some seedy bar after your shift at the steel mill.

      • kprimo25 - Apr 15, 2012 at 8:24 PM

Steel mills all closed. Now they just drink and smoke.

      • Kristenaux - Apr 15, 2012 at 8:29 PM

Hey douch19..oh sorry I misread your username but then went by instinct anyway.

I remember a time when you all were pouring your venom out over Jagr…be careful…maybe you’ll have to back pedal someday if Sid ends up on the Flyers roster. And btw, when you’re as good as Crosby is, you don’t have to earn your living blood letting.
As for the smoking ads, that has what to do with the Penguins team? You really should keep up you know. The last steel mill closed it’s doors in Pittsburgh a lot of years ago. They are leaders in education & medical research now. I wouldn’t crow too much about Philly either, I live here. Large parts of it are a pigsty with rampant crime.

      • bouch19 - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:05 PM

Yea, that’s the way the world sees the people of Pittsburgh, as “leaders in education and medical research.” Not as chain-smoking, greasy, cro magnons who wear jorts and high-top sneakers on the beach when they load up their paneled station wagons with their inbreded families and travel east.

But what should we expect from the same fan base who defended their meathead quarterback after he got caught raping women multiple times?

        City of Champions…stay classy,Pittsburgh.

      • tcclark - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:29 PM

leaders in education? Have you read anything Genopringles has posted?

Who? The name is vaguely familiar, from the distant past possibly…

  16. jucam1 - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:48 PM

Tangfan if you watched the game that the rest of the nation saw and can honestly say that Neal, Crosby, and your team didn’t act like a sad, pathetic, and embarrassing team, then I salute your delusion…. Fortunately for the rest of the nation, Syd’s gutless weak displays and Neal’s dirty hits were apparent

  17. phillyphever - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:48 PM

IDK, but that’s not gonna help him with contract talks. Gonna be an interesting summer for the Pens, with Letang, Malkin, Staal and Crosby all set to become FAs within the next 2 years. Can’t keep all 4 of them.

    • bouch19 - Apr 15, 2012 at 8:06 PM

Fortunately they already locked up Neal to a long-term deal. I would hate to not see that guy play vs. the Flyers regularly for the next couple of years. Lots of chances to put him in a bed next to Cindy in the Head Injury Ward at Pittsburgh General Hospital.

  18. sgtr0c - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:52 PM

Syd, “I don’t like any of them cause they score 16 against us in the last two games”.

  19. tangfan - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:56 PM

I watched the same game you did, and like I said before the flyers were playing the same way, they cross checked when they had the opportunity, they tripped, elbowed and all the other crap you consider “dirty” because it happened to your team.

    • mrklutch - Apr 15, 2012 at 8:02 PM

Not really. I didn’t see any of them head hunting like Neal. I didn’t see Giroux hide behind his players. I didn’t see him smack away gloves like a child. Only thing that could be really debated was the Schenn hit and it looked like it could’ve went either way.

    • phillyboy20 - Apr 15, 2012 at 8:10 PM

HAHAHAHAHA man you have been hitting that kool-aid hard. Keep telling yourself whatever you need to, to make yourself feel better but when fans of every other team are coming on here talking about how cheap and dirty the pens are you might have to go back and rewatch that game when you get off the stuff

    • buckeye044 - Apr 15, 2012 at 8:14 PM

just admit it, tangfan, your team is a bunch of pansies.

True colors for the Pens are coming out. Everything they have gotten away with since Crosby arrived is showing in this series.

    • johninpa - Apr 15, 2012 at 8:25 PM

Agreed, tangfan. I’m embarassed by the play of the Pens today, but Philly was no better. Hartnell, Schenn, Rinaldo and Simmonds are reals princes right? Real clean players? Given me an f’n break. They’re as dirty as they come. It was an ugly game that Philly happened to win. Not playoff hockey, something I would expect in the first month of the season.

      • wicky888 - Apr 16, 2012 at 12:31 PM

Every major altercation was instigated by the Penguins, whether it was Crosby hacking Bryz’s glove, or swatting Voraceks away, or Ashams cross check, or Neals head hunting. As I read above, keep drinking the kool-aid dude. We cold tolerate you getting all the love and affections of the league and its officials with your whining and diving, but add childish BS and intent to injure on top of it and the NHL along withs its players and fans have had enough.

And I must say, never have I ever seen Rangers, Capitols, Devils and Bruins fan publicly root for the Flyers. We appreciate your support, and we fully understand that we will return to hating each other as usual as soon as the Penguins are disposed of.

  20. fallenstar47 - Apr 15, 2012 at 8:09 PM

Both teams took liberties. And played hard and dirty. And hartnell is a puss. This is the first time ive actually seen him get in a fight. So proud of ya little scotty.

    • tcclark - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:28 PM

If he’s a puss, what’s Crosby? He’s fought 59 different times in his career. Here’s his hockey fights page

There are videos of all of them so you can become educated.

      • mikevee1 - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:55 PM

Don’t get to excited – he loses every fight, nothing to be proud of. Actually pretty much every Flyer loses every fight for the last few years.

      • tcclark - Apr 15, 2012 at 10:09 PM

According to, since he’s joined the Flyers he’s won 13 fights, lost 12, and drawn 9. That’s losing 35% of the time. That’s a pretty good statistic and far from every time.

  21. dukh8r - Apr 15, 2012 at 8:10 PM

That was one hell of a game…! Just like the old time hockey…

  22. plutonium57 - Apr 15, 2012 at 8:14 PM

I am pretty unbiased, since I have generally liked the Penguins, and Malkin in particular, but also have come to admire the Flyers, their tenacity and drive. Hartnell is a great player, Giroux, Briere, let’s face it. They are a great hockey team. They have been outplaying the Penguins from the get-go, and now that the Penguins know it’s over, they remind me of when a baboon is backed into a corner, he starts hurling his feces. That pretty much sums up the Penguins at this stage of the game. Just call me a fair-minded observing Bruins fan. The Flyers play like men. The Penguins are basically just having a tantrum at this point. And Crosby is a wuss.

    • mikevee1 - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:58 PM

kind of how the Bruins play…you have much to compare to

  23. tangfan - Apr 15, 2012 at 8:25 PM

maybe I was watching a diffrent game, maybe the flyers I’ve watched all season long aren’t the same flyers you see in Philly. the flyers I watched and in particular against the rangers are a bunch of cheap hitting, head hunting, and cross checking jerks. like I said the only thing they did diffrent is win the game

    • tcclark - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:55 PM

Yeah! they’re a bunch of jerks! Big Meanie doodoo heads!

Get real man. The Flyers play hard and fast, but they’re not “cheap hitting, head hunting, and cross-checking jerks.” In fact out of the 546 PIM the were racked up between Hartnell, Simmonds, Rinaldo, and Shelley, only 18 on them were for cross checking which represents 3.3% of all of the Penalty Minutes. And that’s just for the “dirty players.” If we added in the penalty minutes from all of the “clean players” were looking at a much smaller percentage.

Watch the Flyers before commenting or don’t comment at all

  24. eagles512 - Apr 15, 2012 at 8:28 PM

First of all Hartnell fights a lot so that commenter must not watch a ton of hockey. Secondly, the Flyers responded but the Pens were starting the scrums and were the only team that took cheap shots. Schenn’s hit was clean. Lost a lot of respect for a few Pens today.

    • tcclark - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:57 PM

you had respect for Pens fans before this?

    • mikevee1 - Apr 15, 2012 at 10:01 PM

Sorry turd, when you hit a player already engaged with another its a penalty not to metion racing in from 30′ away, hence the charge……Not to worry, the Flyers will lose because their goalie sux as well, just not as bad as Fleury right now

      • georgenhofer - Apr 16, 2012 at 10:01 AM

HAAAAA! Thanks for that mikevee. That EXACT type of hit is fine when Joe Vitale lays it on Briere, but when it happens to the city of sore-loserdom, it is a problem for the Pens and their fans.

  25. takingbovadasmoney - Apr 15, 2012 at 8:31 PM

Better watch it Yerndon, Bettman may pull the NHL off of NDBC for negative comments regarding one of his golden marketing boys.

  26. caps247 - Apr 15, 2012 at 8:35 PM

Wow, “What happened to Crosby”? So it’s only now that the NHL realizes how much of a dirty, whiny, piece of garbage he is?

  27. tangfan - Apr 15, 2012 at 8:36 PM

    well said kristenaux

  28. pkswally024 - Apr 15, 2012 at 8:39 PM

It sounds like you’re actually praising Crosby for what he did tonight. Only further proved why he gets no respect. He backed down from all the encounters he started, especially against Schenn. What a p***y

  29. jimeejohnson - Apr 15, 2012 at 8:50 PM

Not a fan of either team, but when Crosby poked that guy’s glove away, I knew he was freakin’! It was a cheap shot not worthy of retaliation. Bobby Clarke’s Flyers are obviously not intimidated. I don’t think anyone imagined a sweep by either team in this series. Penguins defense is non-existent.

    • maalea - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:31 PM

Bob Clarke has almost nothing to do with this team. He is a figure head executive.

  30. jason9696 - Apr 15, 2012 at 8:51 PM

At least Crosby showed some passion. Malkin’s been MIA for 3 games now.

  31. mojosmagic - Apr 15, 2012 at 8:52 PM

Anymore crap from Sid Vicious and his career will be over.

  32. critter69 - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:23 PM

I am a Caps fan; and

I don’t think fighting is part of hockey OR ANY SPORT (and boxing is NOT a ‘sport’, IMO).

With that out of the way, at least Ovechkin gives and takes hits (to the point of being tossed from games and suspended for several games in a row), and is not a chicken-**** when he does fight (again to the point of being tossed from games and suspended for several games in a row), unlike a certain player (or the entire team?) who plays in southwestern Pennsylvania.

    • dropthepuckeh - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:38 PM

Since when does Ovechkin drop the gloves and man up? I see him swing his stick and throw a viscous cross check on Seidenberg but not fight. I love the way he hits but don’t think he is any better than Crosby in his double standard. They both think they can spear, crosscheck and cheap shot people because they are better players. They can’t have it both ways. I’m pretty sure neither will be in the NHL in 2015. Too bad but they only have themselves to blame.

Crosby was a disgrace today. Punching Rinaldo when he is being held by the linesman? No wonder he wanted to fight Giroux. Loser.

    • themurphmeister - Apr 16, 2012 at 12:01 AM

critter69: You may be a Caps fan, but not a hockey fan.

That being said, I’d love to see Ovechkin on the Flyers. I like the way he plays.

dropthepucheh… you don’t watch the Caps very much, only go by what you hear or think. Ovechkin has more fights than Giroux. I like the way he plays… with grit and passion. He is nothing like Crosby, who’s a mama’s boy that cries about everything and REALLY REALLY needs to grow up.

  33. northstars17 - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:25 PM

cry me a river Crosby. cry me a river.

  34. sizzle299 - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:26 PM

If you said before the series started that three games in it would be total domination on the scoreboard, one goalie floppin and the losing team taking cheap shot after cheap shot at the disciplined winners…………..the entire sports media and fans OUTSIDE Philly would say ‘obviously the Pens are winning’

….well everyone, now you see what we here in Philly have known for years. The penguins, their coach, their players, their entire organization is nothing but a joke, a paper tiger, and a shameless gutless bunch of cheap shot rejects and whiners who run and hide behind the undeserved reputation the sports media gave them because they don’t know- or care to know- real hockey. They were shoved by blatant favoritism to a cup, but they were never a cup team and aren’t now. This series is their swan song—– goodbye the myth of the Penguins.

  35. philly4lyfe - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:45 PM

    Sour grapes.

  36. pointgold - Apr 15, 2012 at 10:03 PM

Sidney who? Yawn… I think that the Penguins have been holding him out all regular season under the guise of him having “headaches” (he had a concussion, ya know…) and planned to bring him out fresh and hot during playoffs. Ooops. He ain’t. So now he’s whining, just like the spoiled brat kid that he really is. I think “Sid the Kid” has seen his time. He’s not growing up well.

  37. somekat - Apr 15, 2012 at 10:30 PM

My favorie queer move of the day from Cidney? The dance (fight) he had with Giroux. He kept his glove on the entire time. He had 0 interest in fighting. Then when the linesmen get there, he drops one glove, while keeping the one Giroux can see on, and throws and uppercut.

Just another example of why everyone hates this queer. he’ll be where he belongs on Thursday, watching real men play the game. The Pens can’t win anything without the league gift wrapping it for them. Don’t worry, in 5 years when your team is ready to move or fold again from lack of fan support, the league will once again cheat your team to contending status….like the last 2 times

  38. joewilliesshnoz - Apr 15, 2012 at 10:44 PM

Come to think of it , I hate Philadelphia ! !

  39. mclovinhockey - Apr 15, 2012 at 11:05 PM

Cause of Sid Adams will prob be suspended. That’s def 3rd man in. I know usually it’s just a game misconduct but that was bad.

  40. renberg19 - Apr 15, 2012 at 11:06 PM

I’m a Flyers fan true and true. But why is no one questioning all of cheap shots and unforgivable actions (Asham, Neal) on the Penguin’s coaching staff? Sometimes the actions seem pre-meditated.

  41. themurphmeister - Apr 15, 2012 at 11:54 PM

Anyone notice how the feminine Penguins keep going after all the Flyers guys who NEVER fight? Kimmo Timmonen? Really? I mean, come on!!!! Man up, if you want to show how tough you are, fight Rinaldo, Simmonds, or Hartnell.

And Crosby needs to do some growing up… it’s just hilarious how much of a sissy he is. I hated Gretzky because he was so damn good and a Flyers nemesis, but at least he had class. Crosby, like Lemieux, has none. No wonder guys like Jagr and Talbot wanted out of there.

Finally, it’s a shame. There’s so much talent on that team, but their coach is just awful, and eventually the players end up with the personality of their coach. Watch the games to see what that personality is. Frankly, after the season if I was the Penguins brass the first thing I’d do is fire Bylsma and get a coach that can bring a positive identity to the team.

    You mad bro?

  43. cmnsenz - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:08 AM

The pens are embarrassed because they are getting out played and they know it. Sid you have no class, Asham and Neal are punks. And where is Malkin? Can you say over-rated? The flyers own this team… 20 goals in 3 games…have a nice off season wining on the golf course.

  44. mungman69 - Apr 16, 2012 at 2:52 AM

What happened to the hockey game?

  45. fallenstar47 - Apr 16, 2012 at 6:39 AM

Yea go to hockey and see he had 2 fights a year pretty much. He has no problem running a guy or playing dirty. But rarely answers the bell. Was disaapointed in that all the pens seemed more intent on revenge than winning.

  46. mojosmagic - Apr 16, 2012 at 8:31 AM

Crosby reminds me of the little brat in the neighborhood with the big brothers. Goes around mouthing off, trying to act tough, knowing his protection is nearby. I mean come on, sticking the gloves away from the Flyer? You want to be a tough guy? Man up and go after the Flyer heavies.
