James Neal really ticked off Philly with his hit on Sean Couturier

Apr 15, 2012, 6:44 PM EDT

If you thought all the rough stuff between Philly and Pittsburgh in Game 3 died down after the first period boy were you wrong.

Penguins forward James Neal caught the ire of the Flyers by not just scoring two goals against them but also for delivering some questionable hits. The one hit that really got Philly steamed up all over again was his shot on rookie Sean Couturier.

Neal blasted Couturier with an almost blindside shot that dazed the Flyers youngster and sent him off the ice for a short while. Neal wasn’t penalized on the play and later caught Claude Giroux with a similarly destructive hit that wobbled Giroux late in the game. The Flyers got last laugh winning the game 8-4 and taking a 3-0 lead in the series.

As for his hit on Couturier, check it out here.

Why bother replying… with spelling like “eigglesnosuperbowls” and attitude like yours I’m sure it will be a totally rational and well thought out argument.

I’m dying to know what that moron thinks about “The Franchise” now.

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:40 PM

Looks like Mike Mullberry was 100% right on about the little sissy lala who’s job he tried to end ! This dirtbag tried to get someone fired for the truth !

      • fbothharbaughs - Apr 16, 2012 at 5:48 AM

Wild fan, huh? Who knew? I’d be bitter too if my team raided the Pens’ coaching coffers after winning the Cup and missing the playoffs… again….

  2. eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 15, 2012 at 6:50 PM

The pens organization looks minor league

    • biasedhomer - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:03 PM

Even minor league teams are more classy, even when being absolutely dominated.

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:12 PM

It was worse than the movie slapshot !

  3. spiffy53 - Apr 15, 2012 at 6:51 PM

and went head hunting for giroux in the same shift. what a d-bag.

    • finkb13 - Apr 16, 2012 at 2:44 PM

clean hit on both players there’s nothing wrong either hit other than the flyers complaining

  4. bcisleman - Apr 15, 2012 at 6:53 PM

Neal and Asham should be suspended as should the goofy official(s) who thought it would be a good idea to keep Neal on the ice after the second shot at Giroux.

    • somekat - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:05 PM

and Adams for 3rd man in. He jumped Hartnell, and threw 4-5 punches while Hartnell was tied up with Crosby (who once again started the whole thing)

      • polegojim - Apr 16, 2012 at 11:33 AM

Love to see Crosby actually finish what he starts… no rescue, no cover.

Man up Sid… it’s not really that hard. Just pull up your skirt and go.

  5. jblah - Apr 15, 2012 at 6:53 PM

i’m fine with good hits and fights but what we saw from the pens was a disgrace. when you try to purposely injure players, you have lost it and need to go home. here’s to the flyers getting it done on wednesday and sending the pens packing. they need their beauty sleep.

  6. phillyphever - Apr 15, 2012 at 6:53 PM

If I was Neal, I would beg Shanny for a suspension so he doesn’t have a target on his back on Wednesday.

  7. skippyx - Apr 15, 2012 at 6:54 PM

Neal launched himself in the air at an unsuspecting player’s head long after the puck was gone. He then went after another player’s head. Send a message and give him 10 games.

If Shanahan does not suspend him then Shelly or Rinaldo will suspend Crosby in game 4. This is a clear case where proper discipline can prevent an escalation of violence.

  8. danphipps01 - Apr 15, 2012 at 6:57 PM

Way to make the hits sound clean, ProPenguinsTalk. That hit on Couturier was one of the worst I’ve seen this year. Neal jumped him and jacked his shoulder clean into his face. The puck was well behind them. The only point of that hit was to hurt Couturier as much as possible.

  9. lasallehockey81 - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:09 PM

Since it’s the playoffs, if he gets anything, it’ll be more like 1 or 2 games. I’d be shocked if it was any more than that given what’s happened so far this postseason plus Shannahan’s view on the importance of playoff games when it comes to suspensions during this time of year. A 10 games becomes much less in the playoffs.

    • ferricoxide - Apr 16, 2012 at 12:27 AM

Kinda sad when you know that the disciplinarian of the “new NHL” (where we have the utmost concern for player safety!) is gonna hand out less than what Hextall got for his hit on Chellios in 1989.

  10. dclogicatlast - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:14 PM

It’s pretty clear Neal should sit for the rest of the series. This hit was horrendous as is, but then to attempt a similar hit on Giroux is the icing on the cake. Completely unacceptable behavior. Playoffs or not, the game was a blowout and his only intent was to end someone’s year.

    Lay down the law Shannahan.

    • bouch19 - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:28 PM

A one-game suspension will be for the rest of the series, if you know what I mean.

  11. buckeye044 - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:15 PM

Clearly headhunting more than any other hit so far this playoffs. Should be at least 4, probably 8 if you look back on Wisniewski, but Shanny in 2nd half of the year was much more lienient than the first couple months.

  12. killthehead20169 - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:18 PM

everytime i watch James Neal hit on Sean Couturier…i laugh n smile as he hits the ice in an ice cold blackout……:)

    • illadelphiasphinest - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:38 PM

Wish I could hit you like that for saying something like that. Obviously from the City of Sh!%sburgh. Real classy you low life.

      • ematusko - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:09 PM

Dont lose sleep over this turd’s comment. He better get to bed soon though. His janitorial shift begins in just a few hours. He should have nightmares about how much better Philly is, and the fact they are a very young team on the rise.

      • fbothharbaughs - Apr 16, 2012 at 5:51 AM

That’s rich! Somebody from the City of Brothers & Guns calling someone else classy…

    • chap6869 - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:06 PM

Nice reply from a P.O.S. Pittsburgh fan. It can go both ways so, here’s hoping for that one good shot on Crosbys noggin!

      • ferricoxide - Apr 16, 2012 at 12:29 AM

Screw that. I want Crosby to be fully conscious and aware of the embarrasing smackdown his team receives. I want him around for a good long time of watching the Pens go no further. They’ve peaked. Crosby’s seen his best years, already. All he has now is the memories of his glory days. I want him clear headed so he can be all too aware of how far and how fast those days are receding into the past.

  13. dcdangles - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:30 PM

The Pens are embarrassing themselves in this series. James Neal should be fined and suspended in my opinion for his two dirty hits. Asham is a disgrace – I hope he gets his ass kicked in the very near future.

    Pens are done.

I’ve never enjoyed watching a team from Philly win this much.

  14. beavertonsteve - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:35 PM

I can’t wait for that next hit that sends Crosby back to crying in his dark bedroom for 6 more months.

  15. fullbagg - Apr 15, 2012 at 7:36 PM

Next time I hear the Penwhines complain about a hit on the sacred softie Crosby, refer to this series.

Also, refer to their roster. Cooke- Check! still a low life thug… Slew footing and all…

I like neither team. But atleast the Flyers are what they are. The Penwhines complain and cry all year long then they thug it up like its always justified. When they got creamed by the Caps in the Classic, the young dumb one was the one who should have taken the blame for not facing the direction he was skating. The goalie view clearly showes Ferh ducked away from cream puff. But OH! Lets go cry a river cuz sweetness gets his bell rung out of stupidity…

  16. vismund11 - Apr 15, 2012 at 10:22 PM

James neal got the first start for dirty playing in this game.

  17. 8spokedb - Apr 16, 2012 at 10:07 AM

Neale and Asham should definitely be suspended. They are just two more players representing a classless organization that makes the dirtiest player in the league in Matt Cooke an alternate captain. Not to mention the same organization that kept cheap shot artist Ulf Samuelson on their roster for many years. And hypocritically complains at the drop of a hat if an opposing player breathes on one of their super stars.
