Adams might not have a chance to pull Hartnell’s hair in Game 4

Apr 15, 2012, 9:23 PM EDT

adamsvshartnellap AP

For a moment, it seemed like Sidney Crosby and Scott Hartnell were going to drop the gloves during Game 4. Instead, Pittsburgh Penguins winger – and Harvard product – Craig Adams stepped in to bail Crosby out of possible instigator implications. In the process, it appeared that he may have tugged on Hartnell’s lush locks, but believe it or not, that might not be the worst result of that exchange.

As Seth Rorabaugh points out, Adams might be guilty of breaking Rule 46.22, which states that a player will be suspended one game for incurring an instigator penalty late in a game. Such a scenario would also theoretically set Dan Bylsma back at least $10K according to Rorabaugh.

Of course, Rorabaugh also points out that the rule is rarely enforced – at least during the postseason. In fact, Evgeni Malkin got away with a prominent example of what could have been interpreted as a violation of the rule during Game 2 of the 2009 Stanley Cup finals but didn’t face a suspension.

In other words, Hartnell’s follicles should be warned because Adams is likely going to be available for Wednesday’s contest. Still, it’s a good excuse to linger on a moment that was strange even compared to the weird series of events that came before it, isn’t it? (Click here to watch the full game again, by the way.)

punk move pulling his hair..penguins got embarrassed and started acting like children!

    • ravenscaps48 - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:51 PM

Penguins played Busch League Hockey this afternoon. Asham, Neal, and Adams deserves Suspensions and Bylsma deserves to be fined 25K. That game was a mockery! And Sidney Crosby? Acted like his nickname portrays, the KID

      • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 16, 2012 at 6:41 AM

Adams won’t have a chance to shake Hartnell’s hand at the end of game 4 either !

    • clubdrunk18 - Apr 15, 2012 at 10:45 PM

Flyers- LOSERS SINCE 75! The Flyers organization, the city and their fans are an embarassment to sports. Loud mouths and losers. Win a Cup and then start talking. Shut up till you win a championship. Philly- 4 professional teams with 8 chamionships. Pittsburgh- 3 professional teams with 14 championships. Not even close.

      • vilelabyrinth - Apr 15, 2012 at 10:55 PM

I don’t know if that “Shut up…” was directed at me, I am a long time rangers fan, so i don’t really care which team wins. I just commented on what I witnessed today, Penguins getting embarrassed today, then acting like children.

      • mcmurphy22 - Apr 16, 2012 at 2:39 AM

You sound like a Yankees fan. That’s not a good thing.

      • beavertonsteve - Apr 16, 2012 at 11:15 AM

        Pittsburgh has the

        Steelers – Professional
Pirates – Borderline AAA, but still technically professional
Pengwhines – Judging from yesterday… pretty unprofessional

      • lasallehockey81 - Apr 16, 2012 at 6:06 PM

Congratulations for all that… although most of those champioships probably happened before you were born, considering your name is Clubdrunk18, I hope youre anywhere near 30. But when you have to go to the “we have more championships” argument.. that doesnt mean the present team is doing well… at all… enjoy those championships when your season ends on Wednesday… Im sure they’ll provide a ton of comfort while youre thinking about how your hockey team choked and having to endure another horrendous Pirates season, pal!

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Apr 16, 2012 at 6:47 AM

Philadelphia THREE-DOM get it like PHILADELPHIA FREEDOM but THREE-DOM because you’s are down 3-0 ! THREEDOM HAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAhAHAHAHAHA!

  2. sleepers108 - Apr 15, 2012 at 9:59 PM

He won’t get anything because shanahan is to much of a douche bag to hand out suspensions!

  3. bobhpine - Apr 15, 2012 at 10:02 PM

Adams probably should have bitten him…hartnell doesn’t get suspended for biting…although hartnell loves putting his mouth on guys in his personal life so it might be discrimination if you suspend him for doing it in a game

    • drewzducks - Apr 15, 2012 at 10:08 PM

Riot. Kept waiting for Hartnell to “Hulk up” but he was too busy with his hair. He’s more Adrian Adonis than Hulk Hogan anyway.

      • flyersfan1998 - Apr 15, 2012 at 10:20 PM

hartzy worrying about his hair? adams tried to pull half of it out like a sissy. cindy crosby started a bunch off stuff and then scurried off the ice like a rat. letang was probably the only one that played ok. your team is horrible and just had their backs broken. good luck next season, cause you’ll need it cry baby.

      • drewzducks - Apr 15, 2012 at 11:03 PM

Typical Filly Idget. Never said I was a Pens fan but congrats on an apparent series win but as a Bruins fan I can attest that you better make sure you win the 4th game first. This series has been a disgrace and a blueprint on how to not play playoff hockey. As far as Hartnells curly haired girlfriend Lepoontang playing OK? Did you watch this game? He was thrown out 12 mins into the game with his team down 3-1. This was after his earlier penalty led to a PPG. He’s either selfish or more likely stupid, especially after watching him taunt the crowd after he beat up a guy who’s never been in an NHL fight before and on the verge of going down 3-0 in the series.

    • emoser - Apr 15, 2012 at 10:14 PM

the quality of your fans’ trash talk is going down as fast as your team

    • crosberries - Apr 15, 2012 at 10:16 PM

Can you please refer to him as Hartsy because the nickname refers to what a pansy this guy is. He’s a biter

      • tcclark - Apr 15, 2012 at 10:21 PM

Are you really bashing Scott Hartnell on a story written about YOUR player pulling hair? Wow.

      • flyersfan1998 - Apr 15, 2012 at 10:35 PM

your calling my boy hartzy a pansy? he took adams for a ride. now take a look at crosby and tell me what you see. i see a cry baby that always ends up on the ground. the penguins are all floppers. i was at that game. there was no doubt in my mind that if both teams lined up and brawled, the flyers would walkk away and the penguins would crawl away with blood pouring out of every hole in their body

  4. txhockeydad - Apr 15, 2012 at 10:17 PM

Nice ,bob. In the absence of merit and valor, manufacture irrelevant facts to soothe your damaged feelings and image. I used to respect Sid, Dan and the whole Pens organization. Used to…

    • bobhpine - Apr 15, 2012 at 11:31 PM

Literally no one cares who or what you respect hockey dad…you’re gonna make a Theo fleury out of some poor boy I just know it.

      • georgenhofer - Apr 16, 2012 at 9:38 AM

A known Pitt troll stooping to all new lows. Just because his team is getting their collective ass handed to them. It couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of guys.
Apparently a few people care what txhockeydad has to say and believes in, check the upvotes vs you. They mirror the series!

i know your right but i gotta protect hartnell

  6. flyersfan1998 - Apr 15, 2012 at 10:30 PM

The only way the penguins can beat the flyers is if they get the hanson brothers from the movie slap shot. but then you couldnt flop everytime you stepped on the ice

  7. ndrdog - Apr 15, 2012 at 10:53 PM

First and foremost, this is one of the most overblown incidents I’ve ever heard any of the many whiner opponents of the Penguins in the decades I have been a hockey fan. When Craig Adams reached up to grab the jersey of the guy he was fighting (Scott Hartnell in this case) it was Hartnell’s hair being so long that caused it to get grabbed, not the intent of Adams at all. It’s not as if Adams grabbed Hartnell by the hair and dragged him around cave-man-style, or maybe I missed that.

Is it worse to inadvertently grab someones hair or to come up from a fight complaining that you got your hair pulled. Something about a hockey player yelling “he pulled my hair !” just doesn’t sit right with me.

Please remember that in game 1 it was Scott Hartnell who was standing on the bench and reached out to make contact with a player from the other team during an on-ice altercation, a clear violation of the rules worthy of suspension.

    • vilelabyrinth - Apr 15, 2012 at 11:15 PM

I agree with you, but shanahan has been all over the place with fines/suspensions..who knows what the heck he is going to do..

    • emoser - Apr 16, 2012 at 9:32 AM

How is this being overblown? Nobody is calling for discipline against Adams for pulling hair, they’re just making fun of him for fighting like a girl. And Hartnell was making fun of him for it with Giroux for the same reason that you’re so vehemently denying that he did it, because it’s a sissy way to fight.

  8. mclovinhockey - Apr 15, 2012 at 11:11 PM

Ummm Crosby was the one who instigated this, Adams was a 3rd man it. They both should be gone next game.

  9. philly4lyfe - Apr 15, 2012 at 11:12 PM

How about the fact that adams dropped his gloves and jumped hartsy by punching him in the back of the head three times while he was already engaged with Crosby and his back was turned. I’d say that’s a much worse offense than the hair pulling.

    • pbhatesphilly - Apr 16, 2012 at 9:45 AM

Hartnell is lucky Adams steepped in and prevented Crosby from rag dolling him, did you see how he man handled him before Adams came over. Adams was keeping Sid from being suspended for floggin Hartsy.

  10. thehighcountrybear - Apr 15, 2012 at 11:30 PM

Forget the hair pulling, it was incidental…third-man-in might be a different matter. Look for one game for jumping Hartnell while already busy and a further two for having the bad taste in playing in a Pittsburgh jersey…? Tasteless by all accounts!

  11. bobhpine - Apr 15, 2012 at 11:32 PM

    Bryzgalov looks great in net

    • blackacre25 - Apr 15, 2012 at 11:51 PM

He’s looked a lot better than either of your goalies!

  12. hockeyflow33 - Apr 16, 2012 at 12:10 AM

Not a fan of either team but it seemed to me like he was grabbing the back of his jersey and caught some hair.

  13. ja199 - Apr 16, 2012 at 12:17 AM

Alex Burrows can really help Adams with his hair-pulling technique. Alex can also provide expert advice on biting and his new specialty: kneeing groins.

  14. mojosmagic - Apr 16, 2012 at 8:19 AM

The bottom line is the Flyers are @ss kicking the Pens from one end of the ice to the other. The Flyers are clearly the superior team and all the Pens and low fans can do is resort to cheap shots.

  15. 2qswing - Apr 16, 2012 at 9:19 AM

The most recent Phil-Pit and Ranger-Sens games were complete embarassments to the game. They are the direct result of the inaction of Shanahan in the Shea Weber case. In not suspending Weber for that WWE head slam, he declared wink wink, boys will be boys.
Whats next Shanny, folding chair shots to the back of the head. How about a steel cage match. I hate the Rangers but they got the shaft with these latest rulings. Yes their guy deserved 3 for the hit on Alfredson. But pummeling a defessless player laying face down on the ice only gets one game?
Shanahan had every oportunity to suspend Weber for a game and send an early message for the playoffs. Instead he rewarded him and made a mockery of the game. We are seeing the result.

    • emoser - Apr 16, 2012 at 9:26 AM

Shanahan needs to come down hard on the pens after that last game. And not a single flyers player deserves a suspension, but my worry is that if he gives suspensions to three of the pens players like he should then he’ll feel the need to somehow even them out like they do on penalties. I’m hoping they do something in the offseason to allow guys like Letang and Michalek to get suspensions for diving too… that’s as much of an embarrassment to the game as the goonery.

  16. ndrdog - Apr 16, 2012 at 9:22 AM

As my earlier post stated Scott Hartnell was guilty of making contact with on-ice players from the bench during a fight in game 1. On December 17th of last year he was involved in an indecent with the players and coach on the Tampa Bay Lightening bench during a TV timeout. It seems that Hartnell is a repeat offender where bench-ice incidents are concerned. The NHL has always held these incidents to be extremely off limits but somehow there is an exception for Scott Hartrnell, why? Yes, part of Scott Hartnell’s job is to run around and irritate the best players on the opposing team in hopes that they will make a stupid mistake and take a penalty but does the NHL have to be an accessory to this method of thug-style play?

Upvotes!!! Wow!! That’s so important to your life huh? Congrats on the upvotes!!

No bobhpine, I don’t think he was pointing out the upvotes so much as he was pointing out what a douchebag you are.

Pittsburg- Land of the steroid using football team. That’s why most of those 70′s players are dead. A hockey team that was awful all through the mid 90′s to early 2002. This way they could get the best picks. Your team has 1 cup and you had to dive for that to. Can’t even remember when your baseball team was relevant….Oh wait your big story last year was finally being above .500. Everyone of our teams are always either in the playoffs or in some type of championship. Your teams take dives just to get good eventually. Sorry if you all are butt hurt that our star player is better than yours. This is even with us playing without our Captain, half our d out and us missing our other big playoff player, James VanReimesdyk. Let’s go Pittsburg, series is almost all over but the crying. Cheap shot city if you ask me

  20. jaybaileys - Apr 16, 2012 at 11:23 AM

The Pens should be embarrassed about how they’ve played and acted in this game. The defense if you can call it that has been horrible all series. Although I don’t blame Fleury for a lot of it, he needed to be way better yesterday. Malkin has been a no-show and his line has killed them. Kunitz penalties yesterday were very costly. As far as Neal I have no idea what he was doing on the Coutorier hit. He should have been penalized and in the box. Which brings me to another point, I thought the refs completely lost control of this game in the first. They let guys whack each other and instead of taking both, they call 1 penalty. The Pens completely lost their cool when they needed it most. Asham’s incident was horrible, I really didn’t think the Adams thing was a big deal. Can anyone tell me why Letang and Timmonen were given game misconducts? Were their jerseys not tied down or was it something else. Pens have been outplayed and shown no adjustments to the Flyers, very disappointing for this Pens fan. Philly is clearly the better team in this series, no if, ands, or buts about it.

    • flyersfan4life - Apr 16, 2012 at 4:04 PM

You are a rare bird jaybaileys! Most of your fans can’t admit that the team is underachieving and are most likely done this season let admit thay their team is being out played and out classed by the Broad Street Bullie!

  21. hystoracle - Apr 16, 2012 at 12:02 PM

When are they going to stop the shenanigans and start actually playing Hockey in this series? From what I’ve seen, it starts out entertaining and evolves into mayhem and “Slapshot” type hockey. I was looking for Dr. Hook. It has become ridiculous. If Pitt wants to have a chance at staying in this series they need to stop the playing like a bunch of two year olds starting with wonder boy their captain. Crosby is making himself look very petulant, childish, and unprofessional. You are 25 years old – Act like it! IF Pittsburgh wants to keep getting themselves hurled into the box go right ahead and then Flyers will keep lighting up the scoreboard. Then at least, I won’t have to listen to NBC’s announcers fall all over themselves over every little thing “the Kid” does.

  22. hystoracle - Apr 16, 2012 at 12:03 PM

    Has anyone seen Malkin?

  23. matthews4 - Apr 16, 2012 at 1:36 PM

bobhpine good to see you. Yeah let me apologize for being so wrong about “crybaby”! He looked like a 4 year old who didn’t get the toy he wanted in the mall. I guess all your cynicism and sarcasm looks pretty misguided at this point. Fact of the matter is, you openly mocked me, so what now. Are you going to argue that there should not be suspensions handed out? Your boy and your team “are who I said they where”. So go ahead man up and apologize.

  24. dowhatifeellike - Apr 16, 2012 at 4:30 PM

What’s wrong with a little tug on the hair? In football it’s part of the uniform and you can tackle by the hair. Don’t like it? Cut your hair. The only tough guys with long hair are in the WWE.

BTW, is anyone going to play defense in this series?
