Talk amongst yourselves: Capitals beat Bruins 2-1 in double overtime, even series at 1-1

Apr 14, 2012, 6:45 PM EDT

The comments section is open. Go say what you think. No big whoop.

We’ll give you some topics:

—- That was quite the snipe by Nicklas Backstrom to win it at 2:56 of double overtime.

—- Braden Holtby continues to prove he’s worthy of being a starter for the Caps. Do they even need Michal Neuvirth or Tomas Vokoun now?

—- The war going on between Alex Ovechkin and Zdeno Chara continues to be impressive. Two big brutes laying it all on the line physically.

—- Did you get as confused as we did wondering just what was and wasn’t a penalty? Thought so.

—- How bad did Tim Thomas want to have this one back?

This video is no longer available. Click here to watch more NBC Sports videos!

—- That was quite the circus effort from Benoit Pouliot to tie the game in the third period.

Now go, talk amongst yourselves.

wow what an amazing goalie battle this game, i wonder if the whole series will be like that.

  2. HawaiiHockey - Apr 14, 2012 at 6:51 PM

I think Holtby is the star, here.

Not sure what is up with the Bruins, but they just aren’t playing to their potential. Given the first two games, I’m going to say Caps look like they’ll take the series.

I guess the Bruins fans are pissed off. The one time I was actually trying to be nice and say how great of a game it was, you don’t think i’m serious…. Nicky Backstrahm Wit A Wicked Hahd Wristah!

      • phillyphever - Apr 14, 2012 at 8:38 PM

The thumbs down is for that pathetic Boston accent.

  5. bensawesomeness - Apr 14, 2012 at 6:59 PM

Really fun games to watch, really could go either way, both teams have another gear in them, it’s just a matter of who steps up first

  6. theblakfox - Apr 14, 2012 at 7:03 PM

Bruins can play better, credit to the Caps for playing hard and pulling one out though. Should be a wake up call for the B’s to start playing at another level. We all know they have more offensive firepower than this. Props to Holtby for playin like a stud in both his first playoff games.

  7. loinstache - Apr 14, 2012 at 7:09 PM

Some crazy high-sticking by Bergeron and especially Marchand. Kid is going to get it coming, intentionally high-sticking is last thing this sport needs.

    • maalea - Apr 14, 2012 at 7:28 PM

The B’s got away with a lot of post whistle chippie play.

    • mgp1219 - Apr 14, 2012 at 8:12 PM

I guess you missed Beagle’s intentional stick to Krejci’s face in game 1.

      • kotteintheslot - Apr 14, 2012 at 8:37 PM

        1. It was not intentional. 2. He got a 4 min double minor for it 3. Bruins got away with a lot this game…An ordinary skirmish in front of the net and Hamrlik is the only one who gets 2 mins. Tim Thomas punched Backstrom in the face and they did not call anything. Bruins got away with a lot that game and still lost.

  8. cspsrbums - Apr 14, 2012 at 7:36 PM

How about the NBC announcers never heard anyone so bias It was sickening way to go Caps

  9. ajsjr40 - Apr 14, 2012 at 7:41 PM

All due respect to Holtby but I am not certain if I saw very many legit scoring chances from the B’s anemic offense. Two goals in seven plus periods is horrible.

    • HawaiiHockey - Apr 14, 2012 at 7:56 PM

      44 shots on goal…

      • pepper2011 - Apr 14, 2012 at 9:34 PM

I know 44 shots, but do any actual saves stand out? he is playing well positionally, but he hasn’t really been challenged. Bergeron hit him in the shoulder on a screen today and he had a nice poke check on Kelly in game 1- other than that…it’s been the D forcing bad shots.

      • HawaiiHockey - Apr 15, 2012 at 6:33 PM

Almost all of them are notable because they didn’t go in. You don’t have to make Wow! saves to be solid.

I see your point, but he’s looking solid to me.

    • pepper2011 - Apr 14, 2012 at 9:32 PM

I couldn’t agree with you more. Holtby has been good. Not Great. That being said, he hasn’t needed to be great. The real story is how good the Washington D has been. I wasn’t expecting that, and I don’t think(hope) they will be able to maintain. B’s in 5. B’s need to lay it on wideman and Green every chance they get. Alzner and Carlsson will hold there own, but they can break the other four down.

      • sumthinsweet - Apr 14, 2012 at 9:58 PM

Wow.. The Bs are giving it everything they got. The Caps have been lacking offense in both games and have a lot more to lay out there. Ovi and Semin are two of the best forwards in the league and timmy hasnt seen there shots get through yet. If either one gets open its going to get ugly for the Bs. Face it… Your just not as good as you think you are…. Caps in 6!!

      • dcfan4life - Apr 14, 2012 at 11:12 PM

You guys must have missed all the redirected shots. All the screens the Bruins are known for, and all the side to side passing plays. Holtby has been amazing. I mean what do you want to see. A left to right slide glove save flip. Give me a break. Do you even know great goaltending when you see it. These were not 44 shots in the chest or gloves. A good 15 to 20 saves were quite difficult. For example, in 2 games Holtby has had 2 pucks squirt threw him and he has had the presence of mind to slide his back leg and guide the puck from going in. Thats great goaltending. And i hope it continues.

  10. clamnewton - Apr 14, 2012 at 7:46 PM

Tim Thomas has a pretty wicked right hook. Imagine how quick it would be without the weight of his blocker.

  11. itsallniceonice - Apr 14, 2012 at 7:48 PM

Holtby made some nice saves, absolutely not surprising. The Bruins just haven’t challenged him even close to enough. Pretty sad. If they keep taking shots from the boards all game they deserve to lose.

  12. ray2013 - Apr 14, 2012 at 7:51 PM

I didn’t catch the whole game, but for the part that I did? Awesome. Hard-nosed, physical with everyone finishing every check. Great goldtending on both sides. I noticed that when the Bruins pulled out their attempts to intimidate, crap after the whistle, etc the Capitals didn’t back down or let it affect them. They should be sending tapes of this game to the Canucks for them to see how to be a skilled team responds to physical play.

So if Ovechkin keeps playing like this, then will people start saying it was Boudreau’s fault for previous failures in the playoffs? He looked like a beast.

  13. drpompanoduke - Apr 14, 2012 at 8:03 PM

What’s with NBC crew, clearly pulling for Bruins, not sure why but that is life in NHL I guess. Go Red Wings.

  14. habsman - Apr 14, 2012 at 8:08 PM

So I see Bergeron is back to sticking his fingers in other players faces. Didn’t learn his lesson last year I guess.

And how long are the refs going to ignore all the crap that the Bruins try game after game?

    • ray2013 - Apr 14, 2012 at 8:19 PM

It’s a good question habsman. I have no clue why they feel the need to pull crap like that. Other teams and players get called out for crap after the whistle, but the Bruins get a free pass.

    • dropthepuckeh - Apr 14, 2012 at 9:52 PM

Habsman you need to go away. Your team didn’t come close to the playoffs and your act is boring. If putting a glove in someone’s face gets your panties in a bunch its no wonder you are so clueless. Habs suck and your anger is troublesome. Take a brief walk outside your mom’s basement and see the world. You are both irrelevant in the playoffs.

      • drewzducks - Apr 14, 2012 at 10:04 PM

He either has selective memory i.e. hypocrite or he’s an idiot. Must have forgotten about the likes of Skrudland, Corson, Nilan, Kordic, Ribeiro, Fletcher and the list goes on. But since they lost their toughness they’ve lost their relevance. Hope he’s happy.

      • habsman - Apr 14, 2012 at 10:39 PM

Instead of debating the facts, make personal attacks instead. But that’s Bruin fans for you, every bit as gutless as their team.

After all the whining from Boston last year about biting, you would have thought they would have stopped with the face washes (and the cheap shots and sucker punches), but they were on full display again.

        And Mom says hello.

      • drewsylvania - Apr 14, 2012 at 11:45 PM

habsman: the king of the hypocrites.

  15. renberg19 - Apr 14, 2012 at 8:26 PM

Wow. My, how the mighty Bruins have fallen!

  16. arbruins - Apr 14, 2012 at 8:44 PM

Hehehe…funny to see Canadiens fans post here…shouldn’t you be watching golf or something?

  17. watermelon1 - Apr 14, 2012 at 9:03 PM

Still trying to figure out how holtby got a minor penalty called on him in game 1, but Tim Thomas can come out and take multiple shots at opposing players every possession in his zone, and nothing ever gets called.

As hockey fans, we can only hope the officials give the Caps the same home-ice advantage that the bruins received these first two games.

    • dcfan4life - Apr 14, 2012 at 11:17 PM

I agree the Bruins got away with so much crap, but it was good timing. The refs decided in the 3rd period they were not going to decide the game. In doing so i felt a good 8 total possible penatlies by both teams were not called in the 3rd period and the 2 overtimes. I like them letting them play, but dont let players get away with stuff. A penalty is a penalty, doesnt matter what time of the game it is.

  18. cspsrbums - Apr 14, 2012 at 9:12 PM

Where are all the bruin fans that have been on her over last few days

  19. drewzducks - Apr 14, 2012 at 9:42 PM

Not gonna get any easier on road with Caps getting last line change. Bruins let Caps off hook after Pouliot goal as Holtby was clearly shaken after goal/collision but mustered few threats during remaining of regulation. Better hope they don’t turn this kid into the ’71 Dryden.

  20. dcfan4life - Apr 14, 2012 at 11:19 PM

Moving the series to Washington could be dangerous after 2 long games in Boston as the Capitals play great hockey at home. Expect more goals, which isnt hard since we have had 4 total in 2 games, and a great series to continue.

  21. arbruins - Apr 15, 2012 at 5:51 AM

I watched the sens and rangers game…looked pretty much the same as the bruins caps game. One team was more aggressive than the other, I wonder if the NHL is on them as well there Habsman.

  22. crusty14 - Apr 15, 2012 at 1:16 PM

I’m not sure if any of you complaining about the bruins “getting away” with stuff after the whistle, have ever played hockey, or watch it on a regular basis! The pushes and shoves and face washes happen in every single game in the NHL , whether Boston is playing or not! It’s part of the game, always has been always will be!

Personally, I didn’t think there was much of that stuff to be concerned about in the Boston Washington game yesterday anyway! If you watched any of the SJ/St.L , or Chi/Pho games there was a lot more post whistle crap.

So, as someone else out here said, don’t get your panties in a bunch and watch the damn games!

  23. avallstar - Apr 15, 2012 at 3:28 PM

The Bruins were clearly going after Backstrom’s head during and after plays. Interested to see if the NHL is serious about head injuries. A couple Bruins need to be suspended for trying to take out a player that just came back from a concussion.
