Discuss: Couturier, Flyers stun Penguins again

Apr 13, 2012, 10:26 PM EDT

Even obscure history isn’t on the Pittsburgh Penguins side after tonight’s stunning 8-5 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, which places the Penguins in a 2-0 hole as the series switches to Philly. Both Sean Couturier and Claude Giroux collected hat tricks while the Penguins coughed up 2-0, 3-1, 4-3 and 5-4 leads in a game that must have been as unnerving for Dan Bylsma as it was entertaining for the rest of the hockey world.

This video is no longer available. Click here to watch more NBC Sports videos!

Expect more on this mind-blowing game (and feel free to ramble on other topics), but here are a few things to ponder:

  • For all the abuse that Ilya Bryzgalov‘s received, Marc-Andre Fleury allowed seven goals on 30 shots. Is it time to throw “MAF” under the bus?
  • Speaking of playing the blame game, it’s likely that Dan Bylsma might receive some after seeing his team cough up an unnerving series of leads. Is he being out-coached by Peter Laviolette? What would you do if you were in his shoes?
  • Where do Laviolette’s timeouts rank in the tide-changing timeout pantheon? If they were physical events, they’d have to be sent to the Hall of Fame, right?
  • How much more does it burn for Penguins fans to see that Jaromir Jagr scored the game-winner?
  • As you may have heard, the Flyers are 17-0 all-time when they’ve opened up a 2-0 series lead. Can the Penguins make history by rebounding and winning the series?

Part of his slimy head probably melted when Bryz absolutely stole part of his soul with that save.

  5. vismund11 - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:31 PM

I was waiting for this post

  6. 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:31 PM

Can you imagine the Pens getting swept out of the first round?

    • vismund11 - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:32 PM

      Yes.

Damn! How can you not love thois team!

  9. clamnewton - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:32 PM

All hail Orange Jesus!! And the 19-year old man-beast. Nice that Jags got the game-winner, too. Can’t wait to hear the “Crosby sucks” chants Sunday. Compared to Orange Jesus, he actually does suck.

  10. jucam1 - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:33 PM

Wait does the Comish know that little Ms Crosby lost 2 at home?… Maybe if he cries a little more during the games to the refs they’ll cancel the games so he can win!….. Real Men went in to your building and owned you tonight Syd!… That’s what just happened!….. “Let Em In!!..Let Em In!!!”

  11. challer9 - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:33 PM

Why is this so stunning? The Penguins are GOOD (not great) team that got blown way out of proportion. They were 9-4-1 to end the regular season with Crosby back in the lineup. That is a pace that equals 52 wins….they ended the year with 51. All of a sudden the NHL and the media wanted to turn them into the Canadiens of the 70s or Stevie Y. led wings of the late 90s. Just ridiculous. Oh and Fleury is garbage too, that doesn’t help.

  12. speedstickmusk - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:34 PM

Pens fan here. Obviously, the Pens need to tighten up defensively but the Flyers are no question a very skilled team. Giroux is an all world talent but I have to say that I was impressed at how well the Flyers played defensively once they finally got their first lead. The Pens need to reset if that’s possible… 2-0 is a tough hole for sure.

    • rainyday56 - Apr 14, 2012 at 3:41 AM

At least there’s one tough hole in steel city now.

  13. biffnasty - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:35 PM

Crazy good game. Cindy couldn’t whine a victory from the refs. Filthy looked good, amazed at how they always come back. Rangers will crush em tho

  14. geo91 - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:36 PM

Amazing how the Carter and Richards deals panned out, wow

  15. wiffybogg - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:37 PM

C’mon, you got to give the Pens some credit. It’s hard to protect a 2-0 lead. In a playoff game. In a series you already trail 1-0. In your own building. While enjoying a 4-2 power play differential.

P.S. The great Malkin is now -5 for the series.

  16. num1eaglesfanyo - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:37 PM

I can’t believe they did it again, says all the pens fans. What a game though this series will go down as one of the best all time! Go flyers! Knock Knock

  17. mercyflush - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:38 PM

in all honesty, that might have been the most entertaining hockey game i’ve seen since game 6 of the ’87 finals (J. J. Daigneault). i was almost hoping for OT just to see it keep going.

Sunday’s game will be tough for the Flyers – day game! Hopefully the Pens fold but I doubt it. They’ve been down 0-2 before…

    • tcclark - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:43 PM

best since game 6 of the ’04 ECF for me

  18. tcclark - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:38 PM

    1. It’s been time for a little while now. Did you see the softies last game?
    2. Definitely. Contact the Devil and see how much a soul is going for these days
    3. At the top. Oh definitely. He’s the Mike Eruzione of calling time-outs
    4. It burns like hot soup coming out of Crosby’s soup can
    5. If it were up to Barry Melrose yes. For the logical world, no.

  19. kitshky - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:38 PM

Not to state the obvious but after having it inflicted upon us the entire year I find it a real coincidence that when the “GenoPringles” kid goes silent … all of a sudden his entire “army” does too. Almost like it iiss just one kid with way too much time on his hand… mhmm?

    • tcclark - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:39 PM

time in one hand and his miniature soup can in the other

    • somekat - Apr 13, 2012 at 11:35 PM

are you talking about the “soup cup scouts”?

      • kitshky - Apr 13, 2012 at 11:41 PM

        scout.

  20. daryllh - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:41 PM

Somebody’s gonna be drinking a glass of wine on a bear skin rug tonight.

  21. clamnewton - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:41 PM

Lavy is coaching his ass off.

  22. greggoldberg - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:42 PM

Fleury has a save percentage of .804 in this series and has been mediocre at best, which is thoroughly unsurprising to anyone who’s ever watched him in a game other than Game 7 of the 2009 Stanley Cup finals.

  23. bracket5 - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:43 PM

Where u at, Geno? Busy with soup can removal surgery? Douchebag. Enjoy the show. Fly Boys rule!!

  24. jphilip312 - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:44 PM

What bad call, missed call by the refs, natural disaster are the penguins/penguins fans/hockey analysts going to claim this time for the Flyers win??? It is sick how lopsided the calls in this series are towards the penguins yet still the Flyers are winning…you can’t take away heart! Go Flyers!

  25. toeblake2012 - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:45 PM

claude giroux is the top player in the eastern conference. i appreciate crosby, but giroux does more. I have watched crosby since he was with shattuck and he is good. But giroux is really stepping up this year.

  26. renberg19 - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:45 PM

    Giroux = 6 points!
Crosby = takes a dumb penalty causing the Flyers to score a Powerplay goal.
And to add insult to injury caused a turnover which lead to a shorthanded goal.

What a joke of a captain.
Let’s see what Penguin fans cry about this time

  27. mgp1219 - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:45 PM

How does a team with Crosby, Malkin, Neal, Letang keep losing 2 & 3 goal leads?

    • mattdaddy7 - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:57 PM

The Pens are too worried about being physical and flopping to the ice to try and draw a penalty and not worried enough about actually playing hockey. Maybe they’ll realize soon enough that no matter how hard and how many times you hit the Fly Boys, they just keep getting back up! Oh, and it helps that my 7-year-old has looked better in net than Fleury…
The Pens already have no shot on Sunday, Cindy won’t be able to skate that fast with Pierre Maguire’s lips securely planted on his ass!

Same here, it’s gonna be insane!

  30. malkinrulez - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:51 PM

Disappointing loss, to count penguins out is a mistake. Flyers earned the win and flower was horrible . I believe he can turn it around. Geno is the MVP and earned that !

    • renberg19 - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:58 PM

What about the sloppy d? Inept powerplay? Out coached? Turnovers?

    • mattdaddy7 - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:59 PM

      and yet he can’t outplay a 19-year-old rookie…

      • tcclark - Apr 13, 2012 at 11:08 PM

might be the best comment so far

  31. 8man - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:54 PM

Holy crap! I knew the Flyers were for real, but seriously…wow!

Even Philly fan has to be stunned.

  32. lasallehockey81 - Apr 13, 2012 at 10:58 PM

We already knew the Pens could score, but to get to 16 wins, you’re going to have to play in your own end once in awhile… NO lead is safe at home for a team that’s the favorite to win the cup. You could have seen this coming with the multiple leads they gave up to the Flyers in the regular season… Your MVP is minus five and ours just had a 6 point game… National media gets carried away by the big names on this team and totally forgets their play in their own zone is horrendous at times..

  33. klownboy - Apr 13, 2012 at 11:00 PM

The NHL’s playoffs is hands-down the best in all of sports.

GenoPringles come out come out wherever you are……what a douche bag COME BACK KINGS!

    • renberg19 - Apr 13, 2012 at 11:12 PM

All Penguin Fans must be in bed. Poor guys, drinking their warm milk, cuddling with their Crosby bobbleheads.

      • itspartofthegame - Apr 14, 2012 at 10:16 AM

“cuddling with their Crosby bobbleheads” – is that what they’re calling their p3nises these days? Buncha bobblers…

  35. phillyphever - Apr 13, 2012 at 11:01 PM

Ok, enough with the Bryz bashing. Yes, he let 5 goals in (all but the final one wasn’t his fault), but he made some HUGE saves in the series so far. If they play better defense in front of him, they might make it to the ECF.

    • icelovinbrotha215 - Apr 13, 2012 at 11:08 PM

It’s easy to blame the goalie because he is the last line of defense. This may be the best 5 goal game I’ve seen in a long time haha. He made some big saves. Letang is still protesting the glove save.

  36. jssgriffi - Apr 13, 2012 at 11:01 PM

Carter who?? Richards who?? Gotta love it!!! I think the penguins need to flop a little bit more, might not help though cuz the flyers score on the penguins power plays anyway!! Hahahah!! Suck Cindy!!

  37. sizzle299 - Apr 13, 2012 at 11:13 PM

Are you serious Letang? I hope that embarrassing dive follows you for the rest of your career. It is already bad enough that you look like Micheal Jackson on estrogen….

  38. polegojim - Apr 14, 2012 at 12:01 AM

    8 goals??? 0-2 in Pittsburgh?

    Holy roasted Penguins Batman!

    That’s a frustrated lay-down if I’ve ever seen one.

  39. jaybaileys - Apr 14, 2012 at 12:25 AM

Well I am pretty shocked. I knew the Flyers were good, but they are making this a joke. What else can you say they are the better team right now. I feel bad for Fleury he has been put out to dry so many times in 2 games he probably is beside himself. Giroux was the best player on the ice, only slightly better than Coutorier. How you lose games with those leads at home is a real headscratcher. I love the Pens, but they are eating humble pie tonight. I think they will play well in Philly, but at this point the Flyers are on such a roll, it will be a miracle to slow them down. This has to be loved by fans everywhere except the burgh, tons of action and goals. I don’t like the outcomes but the NHL has to be loving the back and forth action. And for all the crushing hits, its been fairly clean to this point, Im sick of the crappy hits from behind bs.

  40. wicky888 - Apr 14, 2012 at 7:06 AM

Hell of a game once again, still cant believe it. Officiating is horribly skewed towards the Pens as usual, but the Flyers prevailed again. Are the Penguins allowed to ice the puck and get it waived off 75% of the time? But I wont complain too much, I’ve seen it so much worse in previous series. LETS GO FLY-ERS

  41. wicky888 - Apr 14, 2012 at 7:07 AM

And Kris Letang, despite all his skill, is a whining diving long haired homer sexual. I might hate him more than Crosby right now

  42. hartsy19 - Apr 14, 2012 at 8:53 AM
