Zetterberg says Weber cracked his helmet on “dirty” play

It appears there’s more monetary fallout from the Shea Weber-Henrik Zetterberg incident than just Weber’s $2,500 fine.

According to ESPN’s Craig Custance, the Red Wings will have to get Zetterberg a new helmet.

Custance reports that Zetterberg’s helmet was cracked on the play, which occurred late in the third period of Nashville’s 3-2 Game 1 victory. NHL discipline czar Brendan Shanahan fined Weber $2,500 for actions deemed “reckless and reactionary,” but didn’t suspend the All-Star defenseman.

On Thursday, Zetterberg spoke about getting his head repeatedly slammed into the glass.

“You get a little dizzy right away,” he said of the Weber hit. “I thought it was dirty.

“I didn’t really know what happened when it happened. It was fun to see it afterwards. In my view, it looked pretty bad.”

Zetterberg also stated he took a base-line test after last night’s game and passed, ruling out a concussion.

No word yet on the helmet’s timetable for return, though there are fears its career could be in jeopardy.

I can see why Weber wouldn’t like getting hit with seconds left in the game, but to react the way he did was irresponsible. If you’re asking players to react to situations where they should let up on a hit where a player ends up in a vulnerable position, you should also be asking players to not make dangerous, retaliatory plays after a legal one – regardless of injury or not.

In this case, the equipment did its job and saved a possible concussion.

Agreed, the hockey game is still going no matter how long is left. Burrows got absolutely rocked by Richards in the dying seconds last night, but nothing extracurricular happened. Suck it up and play and get the player back within the game.

Still waiting for the verdict on Bitz.

I would not be surprised to see Bitz get a game (just no 4 games in the SCF, unprecedented result) despite trying to make a hockey play but not letting up after Clifford turned. Compare that to Weber, when neither are repeat offenders, and it doesn’t add up.

Canadian hitting a Euro….that has never been a suspension in the past right?

    • elvispocomo - Apr 12, 2012 at 4:26 PM

Well, Keith was suspended for his hit on Sedin, a Canadian against a Swede. But its too easy to call no harm no foul on this play.

What I don’t understand is why they were in such a rush to dismiss this incident and fine him rather than taking their time like they normally like to do.

Looks like we’re back in the dark ages of NHL discipline. Well done, guys.

Maybe because they play tomorrow night and you don’t want situations like this lingering.

They could have done what they did with Bitz and make their decision much later in the day. Granted, I know he had a hearing. They seemed to sweep this one under the carpet as quickly as they could. I understand what you’re saying, though.

I wonder if Shanaha wiped the egg off his face before he got to Bitz’s call …

Wow, the Red Wings fans are really whiny. Quite hilarious.

lameRWB, look around its not just Wings Fans. Its Hockey fans upset that our sport pull stuff like this. NHL is looking like the NCAA with infractions. A complete joke.

People that don’t like hockey point to situations just like this a why they don’t like the game. I get it now.

The classic case of NHL protecting their stars/cash cows but coming down hard on fringe players. Bitz deserved a suspension and so did weber. Unfortunately for bits he’s a fourth line grinder who doesn’t have the same clout as weber. Shanny and the league look like morons here!!
