Watch Blue Jackets fans have their dreams crushed during draft lottery party

Apr 11, 2012, 11:14 AM EDT

Take in this video from a Columbus Blue Jackets draft lottery party which was meant to be a celebration of reaping the benefits of being the worst team in the league and a preemptive welcoming party for likely top pick Nail Yakupov.

Of course, those dreams were all dashed when NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly announced the Edmonton Oilers as the winners of the lottery and the first pick overall. The aftermath, as you might expect, was filled with sadness and frustration in Columbus including cries of “Fixed!” and “I hate the Oilers.”

We might as well call Columbus “Mudville” at this rate as there’s no joy there and the (not-so) mighty Scott Howson has struck out on landing the top pick in the draft.

It’s like you can feel each of those fans getting kicked right in the groin after the announcement. Sports are a jerk sometimes.

not as good as the Lebron/Decision fan reaction videos, but pretty good.

The draft lottery was performed in a fully transparent fashion, not to mention audited by PwC.

    Oh wait, it wasn’t.

I could watch 0:24 – 0:30 on repeat for a week before I got sick of it. Then I’d wait a month and revisit it and it would be brand new again. I feel for the CBJ fans though.

That was painful to watch. That poor franchise can’t catch a break.

Every one of them should be ashamed of themselves. If they loved the team, they would stay away. By continuing to put money in the pockets of incompetent and indifferent owners and front office, they allow the misery that is CBJ to continue. McConnell made it perfectly clear to the fans when he said the problems are all on the ice, he doesn’t give a f**k about the fans. The guys on the ice were put there by the very guys McConnell supports!!! NO hockey player on CBJ drafted himself, traded himself to Columbus, or drew up their own FA contract. 11 years of this s**t and they still go to a draft party? If a mechanic continuously breaks and scratches your car, you keep paying the guy and tell him to keep up the good work? How stupid can these people be? The ONLY way anything will change in Columbus is if season ticket holders walk away in droves. Money is the only thing McConnell cares about. Nothing will get better until McConnell understands bad hockey, bad customer service, + bad relations with the fans = empty arena.

That’s the strategy followed in Atlanta. Worked well for them.

      • east96st - Apr 11, 2012 at 3:39 PM

Apples and oranges. Columbus signed over all their casino revenue to keep the Jackets in Columbus until 2039. Did Atlanta? Since the Jackets are now tax payer subsidized, the ONLY way to get a message across is for the fans to stay away. Eleven years of futility, squandered draft picks and trades, a revolving door of coaches – when, bcisleman, do YOU recommend drawing a line? Are the Columbus fans supposed to bend over for another 11 years just because Atlanta left? BTW- just curious, are you a season ticket holder for the Islanders? Because it’s a LOT easier to be forgiving when all you’re doing is watching the team on TV. You pay your Cablevision bill and you’re done. Season ticket holders, such as I was, buy tickets to every game, drive to and from the game, pay for parking, buy food at the arena, etc. It’s a bit more of a commitment. I’m not knocking staying at home and watching the game. That’s your right. And, obviously, every fan can’t be at every game. You can follow your team any way you choose. I’m just wondering how deeply financially invested in your team you are.

Just another kick in the sack this year…

  6. govtminion - Apr 11, 2012 at 2:34 PM

Words fail me. How do these poor folks keep getting hosed over by the hockey gods? Inept ownership, horrible GM, bad coaching, the only player worth a crap wants to get the hell out of town… and now, after an absolutely wretched season, they don’t get the first pick in the draft?

Did the build that stadium on a burial ground or something?

  7. aventador12 - Apr 11, 2012 at 2:51 PM

They didn’t just get hosed, they got robbed big time. I feel for CBJ fans and organization a like.

Clearly yet another sign from the Hockey Gods…

Wow, something unfortunate happened to a sports team from Ohio?

Oh my, everybody, stop the presses!
