Flyers’ comeback creates 2012 playoffs’ first OT treat

Anyone who hoped that the controversy regarding Danny Briere‘s offside goal would go away probably has a headache at the moment. Don’t fault Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers fans if they’re pacing around endlessly while fans of the sport of a whole must feel delighted as Philly came back from a 3-0 deficit to bring Game 1 to a 3-3 overtime showdown.

So for those of you counting at home, that means that we’re one-for-one when it comes to postseason contests going into “extra innings.”

Pittsburgh scored all three of its goals in a rousing opening period. Briere followed up his much-disputed first tally with a second one to give him 98 points in 98 playoff games while Scott Hartnell‘s clever pass opened up an opportunity for Brayden Schenn to score his first career postseason tally on the PP.

One might call this result unexpected, but considering the anticipation going into this game, it only makes sense that this intriguing fourth vs. fifth seed matchup needs more than 60 minutes to be decided.

Considering the history of overtime games in the Penguins-Flyers rivalry, it might take a lot more than 60 minutes. Enjoy it all on NBC Sports Network tonight.

(And feel free to tab the overtime winner in the comments if you’re in the mood.)

    Soupcans my a$$

  2. phillyphever - Apr 11, 2012 at 10:27 PM

    1) That was a make up call for a missed icing call that lead to Pittsburgh’s 3rd goal, so stop crying.

    2) Or better yet, better have more tissues. FLYERS!!!!!

And the Pens should have thought twice about trying to intimidate Danny Brier in the regular season!!

  3. kellyb9 - Apr 11, 2012 at 10:27 PM

    Briere is clutch.

    1 down. 15 to go.

  8. id4joey - Apr 11, 2012 at 10:29 PM

Excellent game by Schenn. Pens sat on their lead instead of taking control of the game. Props to Flyers coach Laviolette for keeping his players focused and chipping away. Didn’t see any whining from the Pens but saw some whining from the Flyers. I hope the pace can pick up and we see a 7 game quarter final.

    • kellyb9 - Apr 11, 2012 at 10:31 PM

Didn’t see whining from the Pens because mostly everything went their way except the score. That penalty on Jagr was a joke.

    • bray72 - Apr 11, 2012 at 10:41 PM

Hate to admit it, but you’re right. But losing the first 5 faceoffs in the OT sealed the deal. I wonder about Bylsma’s matchups there. We do have competent face-off guys.

    • stakex - Apr 11, 2012 at 10:45 PM

And the excuse for the other 3 goals? Oh and what about the horrible penelty calls that went Pits way all night?

The offsides might have been a horrible call, but its not what lost the Pens this game. They did that to themselves.

    • sheckyrimshot - Apr 11, 2012 at 10:49 PM

don’t get salty because your “mvp” got shut down by a 19 year old with no teeth. LET EM IN.

    • kellyb9 - Apr 11, 2012 at 10:57 PM

“worst off-side no call in history.”… because it went against penguins. (sorry had to finish that for you.)

    • redmosquito16 - Apr 12, 2012 at 7:11 AM

Worst in history? Not even close. Watch the replay. Briere got back to the blue-line & crossed it (out of the offensive zone) with his right leg. As he cut back into the offensive zone, his right leg then crossed the blue-line (back into the offensive zone). Yes, his right leg was in the zone before the puck but look at a still shot & you’ll see that the puck was MAYBE an inch from the blue-line. Because he was already in Pitt’s offensive zone & only his right leg/skate left the zone (in his attempt to be on-side), makes it look a lot worse than it really was.

  19. sheckyrimshot - Apr 11, 2012 at 10:35 PM

LET EM IN! LET EM IN!

  20. jucam1 - Apr 11, 2012 at 10:35 PM

What’s that you huge Vagydney?… The refs weren’t supposed to allow this to happen?…. That is how real men play!… Flyressssssssss!!!!!!!!…. Even with total one sided calling the men in the building won the game…. Now its a series you little girl!

  21. gotampabay52 - Apr 11, 2012 at 10:36 PM

Its hard to say but go philly as we hate each other its respect when we arent in the playoffs nice win well played good luck

  22. miketoasty - Apr 11, 2012 at 10:37 PM

Good game Flyers. Pens got the lead and just sat on it. Completely disregarded how they play. All this coming from a Pens fan. Don’t forget Flyer fans it takes 4 wins to take a series.

  23. jagrbomb18 - Apr 11, 2012 at 10:37 PM

    Kill yourself jpelle

  24. jagrbomb18 - Apr 11, 2012 at 10:38 PM

I haven’t stopped laughing since the goal hahahah

  25. id4joey - Apr 11, 2012 at 10:39 PM

Where we’re the regs on the non icing call that led to a Pens goal? These teams have to get nasty and play like they did during the last 2 games they played each other in the regular season. What? Five or six penalties….. Yikes!

  26. crusty14 - Apr 11, 2012 at 10:40 PM

That was very offside, but they missed an icing call that led to a penguin goal too

  27. sheckyrimshot - Apr 11, 2012 at 10:41 PM

THANK HOCKEY GOD HE HELP US TODAY

  28. cup0pizza - Apr 12, 2012 at 12:26 AM

    Hahahahahaha…over 36 years and counting…..hahahahahaha

  30. GenoPringles - Apr 12, 2012 at 8:29 AM

Filthy just won the cup??? This is exactly what makes Filthy garbage. No control over emotion, they win a game in OT and already parade routes are being made. Cheap win by a whining squad. Fartsmell was in the refs mouth all night, yet people dare to call soupcan a whiner. You got 1 filthy, but this is far from over….Fear The Soupcan CC4L

  31. GenoPringles - Apr 12, 2012 at 8:39 AM

Loved seeing Orpik wearing these bums down, guarantee Filthy is starting to feel the pain this morning. I could pleasure myself to his hit on that ginger Claude…soon enough these scrubs will fade….hang in there Franchise

  32. tackledummy1505 - Apr 12, 2012 at 1:05 PM

Wwaaaaa, no offsides, wwwaaaaaa, not enough penalties called, wwwaaaaaa, Crosby was touched with no call, and wwaaaaaa, my team is the greatest and we lost! Pens suck and I’m just guessing this was the locker room feel last night. Flyers fans expect some really retarded calls to be made on Friday. There’s no way the NHL is going to let their baby just go down like that. I’m expecting a loss in game 2

  33. tackledummy1505 - Apr 12, 2012 at 1:09 PM

Oh by the way has anyone seen any of the Penguins players today? I wonder if they’re wearing neck braces or not, from all of the embellished whiplashes they gave themselves while they were being touched by Flyers last night.

  34. tackledummy1505 - Apr 12, 2012 at 1:15 PM

To you Pens fans, whiners? Seriously!? We had 1 power play all night and that’s cause your coach sent out his goon and he trudged all the way down to destroy Brier. How many retarded penalties did your team get? See we expect the retarded calls for you cause you all have the most beautiful delicate flower in the league. Pens fans already crying, because they let us take it. I got a question though, does Crosby fall to the ground on every play? Should change his name to Mr. Flop lol

  35. phillyphan83 - Apr 12, 2012 at 7:09 PM

Geno are you serious?? Then again I should have expected this from you. Do you not remember all the chirpin you were doin for the fast few weeks?? The playoffs hadn’t even started yet and you had the routes through Pittsburgh scouted, planned, set, and lined with chairs and confetti cannons you hypocrite! You said Pens would sweep this series! You said the Pens had the cup won already and you’re gonna say THAT?!? We won remember?
