Discuss: Predators’ tight 3-2 win against Red Wings

In a weird and wild game that only seems fitting for catfish chucking, the Nashville Predators managed to hold onto what was a 3-1 lead by winning 3-2 against the Detroit Red Wings, giving them a 1-0 series lead. Feel free to field plenty of different questions in the comments, but here are a few stray thoughts.

  • Shea Weber unleashed a little fury on Henrik Zetterberg in the waning moments, seemingly hammering his head into the glass. Jeremy Roenick thinks that it’s suspension material, but how do you feel?
  • Can the road-weak Red Wings steal a game or two in what’s being called a “college” atmosphere in Nashville as this series goes on? This series might be a prime example of when home ice does matter.
  • Does Mike Babcock have a point in being furious about officiating?
  • Predators rookie Gabriel Bourque scored twice in the contest. Could he be a factor in this series?

Weber deserves to be sat for the remainder of the series… As intentional as any headshot all year. And he tried pulling a Bertuzzi on him and whiffed

  2. hockinj25 - Apr 11, 2012 at 11:00 PM

Way to many penalties called. The refs need to let them play a little. The Preds got the bounces tonight but the Red Wings outplayed them most of the night. As for Shea Weber, I lost all respect for him at the end of the game. No way he doesn’t get a suspension. Classless act.

  3. hines86for6 - Apr 11, 2012 at 11:03 PM

No he doesn’t. That wasn’t as egregrious as the flying elbows we’ve seen this year. All you nancy boys calling for a series suspension, need to settle down.

    1 game max

    • ravenscaps48 - Apr 11, 2012 at 11:41 PM

You’re views on dirty plays are obviously misconstrued due to the fact that your name is “Hines86for6 “… The Dirtiest Player in the NFL over the last 10-15 Years!

  4. gmenfan1982 - Apr 11, 2012 at 11:05 PM

I definitely see Weber getting a suspension. He made the definition of an unnecessary dangerous dirty play. Flying elbows have been bad all year a well but that does not minimize Weber’s hit.

  5. 3yardsandacloud - Apr 11, 2012 at 11:06 PM

Nashville got 2 really good bounces and that was the game. What I saw was a relentless Detroit team and an increasingly frustrated Nashville team. Nashville is young and when it mattered, they took 3-4 clear penalties which culminated in an absolute intent to injure by Weber. I can’t imagine Shanahan isn’t going to hammer him for that. You trumpeted head shots all year; in the regular season, Weber gets at least 5 games. I doubt he’ll get that in the playoffs, but he probably should…IF the NHL is serious about head shots.

All of that said, it was an entertaining game and the puck bounced Nashville’s way. I don’t think this game is determinative of the series and there is most definitely a lot of hockey to be played.

    • polegojim - Apr 11, 2012 at 11:46 PM

      That’s completely the truth.

Love the speed of playoff hockey.

  6. njw777 - Apr 11, 2012 at 11:07 PM

I think Mickey Redmond put it best when he said “The game of hockey lost tonight.” Referring to the atrocious reffing. The two least penalized teams of the regular season suddenly have 30+ in the playoffs? I was a fan of how hard Weber is to play against but I also lost all respect tonight with that classless act.

  7. xhankmoodyx - Apr 11, 2012 at 11:09 PM

Pathetic people are calling for a suspension on Weber, such a minuscule play compared to others that have gone unnoticed this season. If you can’t handle playoff hockey you should probably go watch basketball.

    • bensawesomeness - Apr 11, 2012 at 11:41 PM

Sounds like someone bashed your head in boards.

    • polegojim - Apr 11, 2012 at 11:46 PM

      You’re a joke.

    • saintez - Apr 11, 2012 at 11:53 PM

Too many Detroit fans here and they are blinded – hey aren’t used to getting beat and behind the 8 ball… Zetterberg hit him in the back FIRST, please,,, babies.

      • bensawesomeness - Apr 12, 2012 at 12:18 AM

Did you watch the same game i did? Catch your breath after holding it the whole game yet? How’s that seat on your bandwagon?

  8. trinityeagle - Apr 11, 2012 at 11:14 PM

Weber needs to be gone for at least 3 games. First a solid punch to the head, then he grabs him around the neck and throws his head into the wall. What a barbaric play.

@xhankmoodyx: you are delusional if you think that is playoff hockey. Playoff hockey is about playing tough, playing fair, and working your ass off, not smashing people in the head.

Even Matt Cooke can’t believe how ridiculous that was.

  9. hines86for6 - Apr 11, 2012 at 11:15 PM

So what’s your attitude on Bertuzzi punching Gaustad in the face at the end as Gaustad’s arms were being held by the ref?

What goes around comes around Red Wings.

    • polegojim - Apr 11, 2012 at 11:47 PM

Wow, your name should be WHINE.

      Not even remotely similar.

  10. hines86for6 - Apr 11, 2012 at 11:16 PM

Wrong. He missed with the first punch. Watch it again.

  11. hines86for6 - Apr 11, 2012 at 11:18 PM

And all this puck bounced Nashville’s way crap.

The red wings had 10 PPs and scored on 2. Paul Gaustad whooped Datsyuk on faceoffs and Pekka Rinne outplayed Howard.

    • polegojim - Apr 11, 2012 at 11:48 PM

Your TOTALLY right, it was a crap first goal

      • saintez - Apr 11, 2012 at 11:54 PM

Crap goal but the ONLY goals red wings scored were on PP. When they stop nitpicking, you won’t be able to score 5-5

      • polegojim - Apr 13, 2012 at 6:47 PM

Ahhhhh…. so a good power play is a BAD thing?

Interesting take from Pred fans. Not much hockey savvy, but humorous.

        Buckle up and sit tight.

      • polegojim - Apr 13, 2012 at 8:37 PM

Wow, you’re wrong twice in one period.

        That must hurt!

      • polegojim - Apr 13, 2012 at 9:28 PM

Sorry, I see why you think PP goals are bad.

Preds don’t score them, must be easy to get confused.

  12. icelovinbrotha215 - Apr 11, 2012 at 11:19 PM

Isn’t playoff hockey suppose to be ‘old time hockey?’ When I heard how many PPs were given, I thought it was Game No. 37 during the regular season. Officials know better than to be the center of attention.

  13. vshehane - Apr 12, 2012 at 12:21 AM

Face it the wings got their asses handed to them just like everyone they would.

    • bensawesomeness - Apr 12, 2012 at 1:18 AM

      your argument no verb

      • vshehane - Apr 12, 2012 at 8:45 AM

Thanks captain obvious. You really are awesome.

  14. capsfan19 - Apr 12, 2012 at 12:56 AM

Real disappointed in weber for that. So someone hits you in the back, you can jam their head into the glass with your hands? That seems legit. If you think thats not a suspension of at least a game you’re a moron.
There was absolutely no way in hell that was unintentional. That was something I’d expect from milan lucic or pk subban not shea weber.

  15. IainRWB - Apr 12, 2012 at 2:44 AM

The dirty hit on the back of Weber’s legs is as suspension-worthy as the retaliation. Absolute joke if Shea has to sit at all for a minor incident like that.

  16. kenrosario - Apr 12, 2012 at 3:50 AM

If he doesn’t get suspended, he’s gonna get Kronwalled. It’s weird how all these playoff noob Nashville fans all talk like they have a stranglehold on this series. Sheesh, it’s just one game that Nashville was supposed to win… And just barely did. These are the Red Wings. I’m sure no one in Detroit is worried.

  17. vshehane - Apr 12, 2012 at 7:21 AM

All this whining is so typical from RW fans, I am sure Weber is pretty upset with any loss of respect from you, right. You guys immediately start looking for excuses.

  18. mtheparrothead - Apr 12, 2012 at 8:23 AM

Welcome to the playoffs Nashville! Don’t get too used to visiting though..

  19. vincentbojackson - Apr 12, 2012 at 9:45 AM

Preds got the win but have to be a little concerned that it came at the hands of two garbage goals.

This series is as close as they come.

  20. 3yardsandacloud - Apr 12, 2012 at 10:32 AM

It amazes me how little knowledge some of the people on this board have. Defending Weber’s actions are really untenable. How can you think this guy was doing anything but trying to injure Zetterberg?

Also, I did not see anyone making excuses for the game. Someone said Howard was outplayed; I’m not buying that. Consider Nashville’s first goal hits a wings defenseman and bounces in the net. Goal 2 hits a stick and deflects to the near side over Howards shoulder. That’s not being outplayed. Not to mention Rinne made some saves but also had at least 2 shots going into an open net blocked by defensemen. Both goalies played an excellent game and I’m unclear as to why people cannot appreciate that.

Finally, Detroit is in the playoffs for the 21st straight year. They aren’t rattled by a game 1 loss. It was close. Maybe if it had been 6-0, they’d be nervous, but 3-2? Be realistic. This serious is going to be a long, rough series. I don’t know that you’ll ever be able to take one game and say it was the series. (other than the finale I suppose)

  21. kenrosario - Apr 12, 2012 at 10:38 AM

    Well said 3yards.

  22. xxbattleroyale - Apr 12, 2012 at 10:53 AM

Wow. There’s nothing but Wings fans on ProHockeyTalk.

  23. bleedingatdawn - Apr 12, 2012 at 11:44 AM

First off I’m a wings fan. I have always liked webers play and still will like him in the future. His actions were reactions to frustrations that always happen in the playoffs. That being said, it’s not ok to retaliate the way he did and I believe he deserves to sit a game or 2. He got caught up in the moment and I don’t believe that what he did defines him as a player.

This was a hard fought game. Nashville won and played well but this game proved what kind of series this is going to be. Wings played really good (minus the first) and just didn’t have it turn out. I expect to see 6-7 games for this series 100%. Personally I’m just happy to not have to watch another wings-Phoenix series!

  24. geo91 - Apr 12, 2012 at 12:01 PM

Where was gustaud when miller got run over by lucic? Oh yah, too busy trying to fight pavel datsyuk… Give me a break guy, be tough against someone like Quincey or Ericsson if your going to act like a hero.

  25. underwoodsbeard - Apr 12, 2012 at 12:32 PM

How about some French cries with your way burgers Wings fans? All this lunacy about the puck bouncing Nashville’s way and “garbage goals”… There is no such thing as a garbage goal! It went in the net, it counted, we found it more than you. Get used to it. You choked down the stretch, lost home ice, and now you get all high.and mighty? The last 20 years don’t matter, and this ain’t our first rodeo either.

How about that last game we played in Detroit? You looked great in that one! Get ready, sign of things to come! Go ahead and invest in a Prince Fielder Jersey, you’ll get more mileage out of that this year.
