I had never heard about the Heatly rumours, I agree Stajan is terrible and the fact that Sutter extended him with a NTC was mind blowing! My original point was just that Phaneuf isn’t worth nearly what many Leafs fans believe he is, he’s at best a number 3 on a good defence IMO.

Believe me I’ve watched Phaneuf..I live in Canada. I have to watch the leafs every saturday night like the rest of this country. Although his game has declined he is far better then stajan who’s the only player thats still on the team from that trade, who by the way might be the second most overpaid player in the league behind Gomez. Regardless they had a deal on the table for Heatley in the summer (who would be better then the majority of players already on the team which is really saying something about Heatley) and turned it down only to trade Phaneuf later for literally no one! What a well run business

I’m not sure LA would be a good fit, just simply for the fact that the team really disliked Darryl Sutter just before he “stepped down” so I’m not sure Iggy would be quick to jump back onto a team with him at the helm.

I would agree that he’s not a true Superstar anymore (outisde of Calgary) but I would compare him to Steve Yzerman in the late 90′s or Brendan Shanahan around the same time, not what they were but still very good players.

You beat me to it soupy! But I guess the guy is right…he’s not a number 1 center! With that being said he is very good at winning faceoffs, at least compared to the rest of the Flames, which frankly isn’t saying much.

Not to defend Darryl Sutter, cause he did a horrible job here, but you obviously haven’t been following the career arc of Phaneuf, he’s nowhere near the player he was in his second year in the NHL and if the Leafs were to trade him now I would guess they wouldn’t get the return you think they might. Tough to market a defenseman who can’t skate very well.

They will, this is the same as the Ray Bourque situation. Iginla means too much to this city and to the organiztion for them to trade him to another also ran team. Now with that out of the way two things need to be said:

1. Quoting Eric Francis is ridiculous, he’s got very little (if any) inside info on anything going on with the Flames or NHL for that matter, sadly he’s better at journalism than his awful morning radio show!

Nah, him and his Olympic line mate, Crosby, with Dupuis on the other wing would make for one hell of a second line behind Malkin, Kunitz, Neal. Would have to clear up a lot of cap space to make it happen though, but still makes my mind drool thinking of how other teams could “try” and match up with those two lines plus Staal.

Fair point, I’m not really versed enough in the state of Calgary’s farm system to make an educated call as to their goaltending needs. I more or less agree with you on how much better he’d be on another team though. He’s gone from ‘superstar’ to ‘very effective offensive player’, could still put up great numbers in the right situation.

Iginla brings quality intangibles, but that cap hit is a killer. The commenter that suggested the Sabres definitely has the right idea, though.

Calgary doesn’t need goaltending prospects. They have Irving and Ramo that could (and I stress “could”) be Kipper’s successor. But you’re right, he’s definitely not the player he was. But he’s managed to score over 30 goals again without anything that closely resembles a number 1 centre under a Brent Sutter defense-first system. As a Flames fan who watched almost every Flames game this year, he would still flourish on a team with other talent around him. He’s just not capable of carrying a team anymore.

The only reason Calgary refuses to believe he’s not a #1 center is because he’s not a center. He’s played right wing his entire career.

ooo I love speculatin’. He’d be a good fit in LA, able to play their physical puck possession style, and may finally be the catalyst they need to get the offense going. Washington is another good one, especially if they part ways with Semin, he could conceivably replace that offense while providing more physicality and intangibles. Also I could see a prospect like Holtby being attractive to Calgary, as a rebuild would necessitate finding a successor for Kiprusoff. St. Louis? Well he’d make them better, assuming they don’t give up too much to get him, but I don’t know if he wants to be the ‘go-to’ guy on offense at this stage of his career. He’d fit fine in Boston or Detroit, but I don’t know if they need him enough to put together competitive packages (although that might not matter, if Iginla decides those are more attractive options).

Also, as a fan of a rival team that’s seen him a lot over the years: he’s not the player he was, and I’m sure a further drop off is coming in the next couple of years, but he definitely still has enough hockey in him to be valuable in the short term.

The market might not be what they think for an aging center with declining performance and a big price tag. I love em as a gold medal winner but he’s not a #1 center anymore and that is calgary’s issue cuz they refuse to believe he is not.

Ship him to the ‘burgh for Tyler kennedy, Paul Martin, a prospect and a first. Out of the conference and to a legit contender. Also has great experience playing with Sid and the flames are a dumb enough organization to actually do a ridiculous trade like that. If you don’t believe me go see what they got for phaneuf LOL
