Fan interest has never been the issue for the Pens, it was the bad management which put a poor product on the ice for roughly 15 years. Even the New York Yankees have drawn poorly when they weren’t contenders. Always love taking down the conspiracy theorists.

Two decades of professional tanking? Better get your facts right buddy. The Pens have only had five losing seasons since 1987-88. Four of those happened in the early 2000s, as a direct result of the bad management from the late 1990s, which led to the bankruptcy. Good grief.

Crosby is half the defensive player Datsyuk is. He might not put up huge offensive numbers but he more than makes up for it defensively.

Amen to that. Maxime Talbot, Pascal Dupuis, Hal Gill, Bill Guerin… and that’s just the last Cup-winning squad. Seriously, Bylsma won last year’s Jack Adams for what he did WITHOUT Crosby, Malkin, and for quite some time, Staal. Still ended up with 106 points, tied for third overall in the entire NHL, and the fourth seed in the East. Running guys like Arron Asham on the second line. Having two of the NHL’s best forwards is great, but the Penguins have the deepest lineup in the game today.

Only three teams have more Cups since the Penguins were created – the dynasty-era Islanders and Oilers with four and five respectively, and the Red Wings with four of their own. The Pens are extremely likely to win another Cup in the next three years or so with their current roster, so it’s not that unreasonable to expect them to move into a tie with the Wings and the Islanders. With the Islanders and Oilers completely irrelevant at this point, the only franchise that can legitimately claim to be as or more successful than the Penguins are the Red Wings. One franchise. Everyone else is looking up to the Penguins’ accomplishments and wishing they were that good. Get over it.

Well said florida76. Can’t stand all the 87 haters, if he played for your team u would love him. Yes, years ago he overplayed some calls n held the refs hand but our kid is now a man and u no longer see it. He gets into scrums n isnt afraid to take a hit. He’ll crashes the net and will create traffic in front of if too. U need to get over the fact the he’s the face of the NHL and without him you probably wouldn’t see your team on TV.

I’d say that there’s at least a 50/50 chance that either Sid or Geno takes it next year. While it depends on health and there’s certainly no guarantee, my money is on the guy with 1.68 PPG in 22 games this year. For those keeping track, that’s on pace for 138 points over 82 games.

Pens have definitely had an impressive number of standout players in their history, who was the last Maple Leaf or Canadian to win the Art Ross? Along with the All-Star players, the Pens have have a considerable amount of team success as well. If you look at the Pens objectively, they would have to rank among the top third in NHL franchise achievement. Pretty impressive, considering six clubs had a roughly 40 year head start. The Cup leader among the Expansion 6, and vastly more accomplished than other early 70s teams like Washington, Buffalo, and Vancouver. And the glory days of the Islanders and Oilers were more than two decades ago.

In fact, if you measured franchise accomplishment since 1967-68(when the Pens entered the NHL), Pittsburgh has outperformed Original Six clubs Chicago, New York, and Toronto. Even more impressive, since the Pens struggled for most of their first 20 years. Pens have also equaled the Cup output of the Bruins, and even the vaunted Red Wings have managed only one more Cup win during this time span. Montreal hasn’t won a Cup in two decades, with no relief in sight.
