Hm, it didn’t seem to work out that way for Boston this year. The Canadiens couldn’t win to save their life, Buffalo was closer to the cup before adding tens of millions to their salary, and the Leafs imploded like normal. At least Ottawa made 8th, so the Bruins must have had some easy games this year, right? The Northeast was hardly a bunch of world beaters, yet people are still very happy to put them as one of the favourites.

Certainly the Central and Atlantic are the most competitive right now, but the Northwest used to be possibly the toughest division in hockey. I’d have to wonder how well those Atlantic teams would do with the increased travel of playing in the Central or Northwest, as well.

Boston was the best team in the SCF last year. That doesn’t mean they get to stay the best as a de facto argument. Considering the most recent (yet not as important overall) hardware given out, the Canucks have been the best team in hockey this season.

Vancouver and it’s fans are hardly happy enough with the President’s trophy to just take the rest of the year off, we’ll have to see what team steps it up in the playoffs – not to mention staying healthy enough to win 16.

Like the mighty Northeast, where Boston has feasted on non-playoff entrants Toronto, Montreal, Buffalo, and No. 8 seed Ottawa. No one is discounting the Bruins based on the quality of their division, right? Sometimes you can have a good team despite playing in a weak division, which the Bruins and Canucks each proved last season in the SCF.

No one in Vancouver puts value on the Presidents “Trophy” except for what it is, home ice advantage.

Although it’s true that the Nux play in a weak division, they have still beat the leagues elite teams. They scored 4 PPG’s while beating Boston in an epic rematch of last years cup final. They’ve also beat Detroit, Chicago and St. Louis. You better hope that your team(s) don’t take this team as lightly as you do, because this is a very good team and they beat you in many different ways.

an excellent point which is constantly swept under the rug here in Vancouver … over the years, playing 8 x games against the likes of Calgary, Edmonton, Minnesota and Colorado has equated to 32 games or 64 “gimme” points every year for the Canucks … I would submit that that and that alone, is the main reason why the Canucks have been able to amass such impressive seasonal stats …

Exactly – WAY too much talent to come up empty…

We’re starting to see the stress on players like Luongo. They’re tired of the perenial ‘ultimate failure’ and want to finally WIN or move on.

They’re starting to ‘disbelieve’.

Finish first and have to play the 40 & 27 Kings. Not much of an advantage in a best of 7. Maybe warrants a first round bye in an 82 game schedule.

The problem with the presidents trophy is just that. A trophy that’s pointless. Canucks get mocked for trying to be the top seed in the playoffs. That’s what everyone’s playing for; not a trophy. Any team in the league would try for home ice throughout. It just so happens a dumb trophy comes with it. Does anyone mock the best regular season nfl, MLB, nba team? I wish the NHL did away with the trophy for just that.

The only teams that place THAT much value on the Presidents Trophy are those who haven’t won the Stanley Cup.

When you have a Championship Banner hanging from your rafters, you’ll understand. Until then, I suppose…. enjoy the trophy.

Everyone who loves the game of hockey is ‘focused’ on the playoffs. Means nothing unless its combined with actually winning the final series.

Would Vancouver have the most points if they played in a division packed with other good teams (e.g. Atlantic or Central). I rather doubt it. There are 7 or 8 other teams in the NHL that probably could have put up 111+ pts if they were the lone good team in that cupcake division.

What I find interesting is that only people pretending that anyone is putting too much value in a Presidents Trophy … are fans of teams that didnt win it.

I’ve yet to hear anyone out of Vancouver being anything except focused on the playoffs.

Let praise be given where praise has been earned. As you know friends, I’ve maintained all along here that the Canucks are without a doubt “the” team to beat … and lo and behold they’re the top seed again ! Well that’s just “groovy man” as far as we LA Kings fans are concerned. Tonight I was actually praying for our Kings to lose so that we can get down to business here without further ado … suffice it to say that round one can’t now come soon enough !
