i would say this particular instance is borderline only because im not sure the stick actually hit his face. every team is going to try to draw penalties like this. cant get mad at it. keep your sticks down and things like this do not happen.

It probably depends on whether the team you root for gets the call or not I would imagine. Speaking for myself, I wouldn’t like it if someone on my team did it. Also, I think it depends on the play too. Letang was just over the top in his reaction and it looks even worse on the slow mo. He didn’t throw his head back until well after the stick had left his shoulder, and he dropped to his knees like his head was almost taken off. It also gave the Pens almost a full two minutes of 5 on 3 in a tie hockey game. I’m not even sure the stick did graze his head at all.

It was such a violent high stick from Peverley, I figured there would be a report on his condition today. It’s funny when they showed the end ice camera view, the ref had no vision of the actual contact, just saw the stick up and Letang almost decapitated.

Looks like the stick grazed his face a little – but no question Letang was going to make sure that the refs noticed it…

Question to the commenters: is doing something like what Letang did a savvy play or a cheap play? My vote is savvy and I would put it in the same vain as trying to draw a retaliation penalty, or something like that. I am also willing to acknowledge my bias as a Pens fan on this particular play….
