PHT 5 Minute Major: The Broad Street Whiners?

Apr 4, 2012, 9:43 PM EDT

Sidney Crosby admits that the Philadelphia Flyers “bring out the worst” in him, but the reverse might also be true. Watch PHT’s Jason Brough and Mike Halford discuss some of the most interesting issues in the NHL, including a Flyers team that might be known for whining like it once was for fighting – which might dissipate quickly if they go after Crosby to avenge Danny Briere.

    Boo-urns.

  2. jkay1818 - Apr 4, 2012 at 10:11 PM

need some more practice on camera.

    • kitshky - Apr 4, 2012 at 10:22 PM

Ya they could probably use a coupe more hours behind a camera, but I love their radio spot and they just do kinda crack me up all ’round.

  3. laurely515 - Apr 4, 2012 at 10:21 PM

The two minutes I spent watching that was two minutes more than I should have. It was basically a video of all the asinine comments that have been posted here since that game, only with stuttering and awkwardness the replacing third-grade level writing.

    • Jason Brough - Apr 4, 2012 at 11:01 PM

You should’ve stuck with it. The last three minutes were way better. We only got tongue-tied six times.

  4. crosberries - Apr 4, 2012 at 10:24 PM

Hope they take milbury off the air he’s had too many chances. Bunch of whiners

  5. bmscalise - Apr 4, 2012 at 10:53 PM

I’m disturbed by this video. Did these guys really suggest that the Pens stars be targeted with dirty hits? Cause that’s what it sounded like: in fact, it sounded like they suggested that the Flyers would be “whiners” if they didn’t dish out a head shot or the like.

The Flyers have every right to make Sid and Co’s life difficult, but to suggest that they ought to be targeted with cheap shots is pathetic, even for a media outlet.

    • Jason Brough - Apr 4, 2012 at 10:58 PM

No, we said it opens up the possibility.

      • mickeyb21 - Apr 4, 2012 at 11:13 PM

You forget that also opens up the possibility of the Pens hitting the Flyers stars, too. If a questionable hit is put on Crosby or Malkin, a hard hit should be expected on Giroux and Jagr. Flyers need to keep that in mind if they go for revenge for a clean hit.

  7. jimw81 - Apr 4, 2012 at 11:39 PM

The Broad Street Whiners? Na. The problem the flyers and flyers fan base has with the penguins is that they have been rewarded from the NHL League offices. Point example, when the penguins tanked seasons to get an malkin and Crosby the Flyers and other major market and mid market teams were going to the playoffs and paying their bills while they sat in bankruptcy and made ZERO attempt to have an competitive hockey team on the ice. Another example is the treatment on the ice by the refs. It was even shown in Crosby first game.

Dont give me the Coyotes argument, at least they actually put a team together and made the playoffs.

    • obamablowz - Apr 5, 2012 at 12:12 AM

if these are the top 10 hits vs crosby, is it safe to say he never gets hit? they all sucked except for the detroit one.

    • kitshky - Apr 5, 2012 at 12:25 AM

There is no more immature, childish, and all round pathetic group of NHL fans than the ones who spout the same moronic anti-Crosby BS (honestly even stupider than people who still call the twins “Sisters”).

I have no idea what that video is supposed to show except that it hurts getting a nasty crack into your face. I am nowhere near a Pens fan but you guys honestly sound like a bunch of Bantam players arguing over pizza and pop after a game.

      • irm780 - Apr 5, 2012 at 5:19 AM

Yep, I call that the “Pro Wrestling” group of hockey fans.

      • dougr42 - Apr 5, 2012 at 10:23 AM

        BUUUUUUURNED

    • jkay1818 - Apr 5, 2012 at 12:26 AM

what are you making us watch over here?

    • m1k3g - Apr 5, 2012 at 12:59 PM

Folks, I’ve said it before, but let me reiterate:

When dealing with the average Philadelphia sports fan you have to realize these are the people that can’t handle their liquor, go to Phillies games, get drunk, and puts their finger down their throat to intentionally vomit on a 9 year old girl in front of her father.

They’re such derelicts that there is A JAIL AT THE STADIUM when you go to Eagles games.

These are the people you’re dealing with here.

      • sweezz - Apr 5, 2012 at 1:29 PM

Almost every football stadium has a “jail” in it. It’s a holding cell. They aren’t giving you congical visits, or 3 hots and a cot. If you think Philly fans are bad, I assume you only read stories that single us out. Have you ever been to New York, Boston, Oakland, LA, and Phoenix (cardinals) for a game? Passionate fans = A rough time for the opposing fans. I got jumped in the meadowlands for wearing green. Wait, does anyone remember the Chargers fan that was stabbed to death by a Radiers fan? Or the Yankees fan who drove her car into a crowd of Red Sox fans? Of course not. Go back to agreeing with the masses. There’s ashholes every where you go.

      • pjh1989 - Apr 5, 2012 at 2:30 PM

Yet another idiot that thinks getting drunk and acting like a fool is exclusive to one city…go boo and give the finger to Jaromir Jagr, you idiot.

      • m1k3g - Apr 5, 2012 at 4:42 PM

        @sweezz
Homie, there was a jail and a court with an on-duty judge for the purpose of arraignments on game days at The Vet. If you think this is something that exists ‘everywhere’, you MUST be from Philly.

        @pjh1989
We’ll keep booing Jagr. You guys go ahead and keep booing your first round draft picks as they’re drafted (Donovan McNabb).

….and throwing batteries at JD Drew
        ….and ice at Santa Claus

      • sweezz - Apr 5, 2012 at 6:04 PM

Uh…. Browns, Raiders, Patriots, Ravens, Redskins.. just to name a few that also have a processing court and/or holding cells. Do you research before you look like an idiot. Philly started it, and the rest of the stadiums followed.

As for Mcnabb? We booed the pick since we wanted Ricky, not McNabb… but boy we should have… He did great for us, the skins, the vikings…..

And Batteries and Santa? Come on, let’s talk about something that happend less than 40 years ago.

      • m1k3g - Apr 5, 2012 at 8:42 PM

        @sweezz

I’m not saying your claim about the other stadiums having processing courts is wrong, but I can literally find nothing to substantiate your claim.

And let me clue you in on something. You think you would have been better off with Ricky Williams? You wouldn’t have. Why? Because your team sucks.

As far as the other incidents I cited being old, well that may be. But I’ll let you go back 40 years and tell us how many other cities threw ice at Santa Claus. You’ve been assholes. You’re still assholes. You’ll probably always be assholes.

There are assholes in every city.

There just happens to be an abundance of assholes in Philadelphia.

      • sweezz - Apr 5, 2012 at 10:28 PM

Stabing a fan, and running over others with a car is far worse than throwing snowballs at a piss poor drunk santa claus. The media loves to point out our flaws since we have a reputation. And personally, I love our reputation. It makes fair weather, and soft fans stay the F out of our stadiums.

“Stadiums hosting the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles and Baltimore Ravens have successfully used makeshift jail cells and courtrooms.”

        from – http://www.popcenter.org/problems/spectator_violence/3

You must not have looked very hard to find anything else on the status of stadium securities, I’m not going to do more searching to prove you wrong.

Your fans have been soft, you’re still soft, and probably always be soft.

There are soft fans in every city.

There just happens to be an abundance of soft ones in Pittsburgh

      • m1k3g - Apr 6, 2012 at 12:39 PM

So yeah, you found one other example. Like I said, it’s not SOP to have an onsite judge at sporting events.

“And personally, I love our reputation. It makes fair weather, and soft fans stay the F out of our stadiums.”

So basically, you’re admitting that you’re a bunch of derelict assholes (which was my whole point). Thanks for proving it for me.

Furthermore, no, it doesn’t keep anybody out of your stadiums; hence the need to additional law enforcement presence.

Keep puking on little girls, dude. Everyone who watches sports strives to achieve ‘I puke on 9 year old girls’ status one day. You guys don’t want to get caught resting on your laurels.

  8. murtdurt - Apr 5, 2012 at 2:05 AM

Even after being warned to save the 2 minutes of my life I watched it anyways. It’s already been said but what were you guys thinking with that video?? Why should anyone on the penguins be upset at Joe Vitale? If Philly is really that upset about the hit maybe they should talk to Danny about keeping his head up when skating through the middle of the ice…he was out there for the face off and he knew exactly who was out there when the puck dropped that hit shouldn’t have been a surprise. And I could agree with all the whining going on from the flyers if it was a dirty late game hit but everyone, including Brier knows it was clean! To say it’s open season on Sid, Malkin or Fleury and not thinking the same isn’t true for Giroux, Jagr and Bryz is poor reporting. I get there was only 2 games tonight boys but common SON

  9. pmac26 - Apr 5, 2012 at 7:36 AM

Well that was 5 minutes of my life I’m not gettin’ back!!!
Thats a whole lot of words to say nothing

  10. iluvwikileaks - Apr 5, 2012 at 7:48 AM

The Flyers and Milbury suck the big one.

  11. jaybaileys - Apr 5, 2012 at 9:27 AM

I believe he lost 2 teeth from that shot. What exactly should he have done there crosscheck Hatcher from behind while he skated to the bench? Crosby is never gonna be anything but a whiner to you guys. But if they swung a trade for him you’d cheer him just like you do Jagr and Talbot now. Yea the Pens sucked for awhile so what, there owner wasted all their money and left the franchise a mess. Mario came in and filed bankrutpcy and paid every penny back to the creditors. Now they spend to the cap and are a contender every year. If you hate the Pens that’s your choice, but can’t we just enjoy this for what it is. One of the best rivalries in sports right now. The series should be epic. I bet Leafs and Habs fans are jealous of what the Pens and Flyers have now.

    • dougr42 - Apr 5, 2012 at 10:25 AM

Mario was the “creditors”. How do you think he ended up owning the team?

      • pmac26 - Apr 5, 2012 at 11:30 AM

every creditor was paid 100 cents on the dollar from the bankruptcy! Yes Mario was one of the creditors but what you fail to realize is he was the last creditor paid. The group led by Mario bought the team that was in bankruptcy the fact that he was one of the creditors did have something to do with his group be awarded the team however that is not the only reason so when you say that (Mario was the “creditors”.) know what you are talking about before you hit the post comment button!

    • pjh1989 - Apr 5, 2012 at 11:55 AM

Well said…But the difference between Jagr and Crosby? Why one gets respect (even before he signed with us) and one doesnt? Jagr isnt a punk. You ask any Philly fan about the Lemieux/Jagr days, and they’ll admit to hating them because they always owned us, but immediately after they’ll say how much they respect them and how great they are. You ever see this kind of stuff, http://i40.tinypic.com/35k28tk.gif , from guys like Lemieux? I’m sure every once in awhile he was overzealous, we’re all human..But every time we play them now, I see the hero of the league, who can do no wrong, doing stuff like that. Malkin is ten times worse. There was no double standard with Lemieux and Jagr like there is now with Crosby/Malkin.

  12. pjh1989 - Apr 5, 2012 at 11:35 AM

Wait…Their players and fans did just as much “whining” as we did. Their big radio guy, Mark Madden, was offensively and shallowly trolling Flyers fans on twitter after the game. A popular rib joint stopped serving ribs to the Flyers, an entire hockey team for effs sakes, because penguins fans got their knickers in a twist about it. And they have Crosby, who is notorious around the league for crying after every play, and who was even called out by Mike Milbury… And we’re the whiners? Cmon…Its an intense rivalry where logic pretty much takes a back seat to raw passion…How do you pick one side to be whiners? And more importantly…How is it us???

Half of the things we were “whining” about didn’t even relate to the brawl at the end. I think a lot of people here, while enjoying it and generally considering it bada_S s, probably thought that Lavy went a little over board (pun intended). Plenty of teams, us included, send out a line like that from time to time to send a message… Every body was mad because it was typical Penguins hockey: Dirty dirty dirty. Crosby got away with more slashes than Freddy Kruger, his blatant headshot on Schenn was ignored for his pathetic dive on Schenn’s retaliation, Malkin was throwing elbows and puts a guy on the ground and sucker punches him in the back of the head as usual, bla bla etc.

We’re mad because once again, the leagues best two superstar forwards, one of whom is supposed to be the face and ambassador of the NHL and who just lost a year of playing time due to at least one headshot, were the dirtiest players on the ice. Isn’t Crosby supposed to be leading the charge against getting nonsense out of the game? Yet somehow, they get ignored and we’re the ones that get the dirty/tough guy rep (A tired rep that expired 30 years ago). Penguins hockey is one big double standard. Its ridiculous and embarassing for the league.

I don’t care if you’re part of this rivalry or not, if you’re an objective and sensible hockey fan watching these games, you’d understand the frustration that we deal with when it comes to the stupid penguins. I understand most national figureheads ignoring it, but they know damn well that Crosby and his team gets absolutely stroked by the Gary Buttman and the refs. And calling us out for legit frustrations? Absolute BS.

    • pjh1989 - Apr 5, 2012 at 11:41 AM

But then again, I’m not suprised to see this coming from the site that accused Flyers fans of rooting for cancer. Simply because the first thing they saw on the big screen, before everyone realized it was a cancer patient fund commercial, was Crosby’s face; which they booed.

  13. pens5829 - Apr 5, 2012 at 9:17 PM

Did you really just write a four paragraph post whining? What a waste of time? A bigger waste was that I actually read that garbage.

Cut and paste it into an email and send it off to Gary Bettman and wait patiently for his reply.

Let it go! It was five days ago.
